Sermon:   "Eye Opening - Life Saving"
Communion for a New Year

This Sunday
Life Savers come in a variety of flavors. Some come in a variety of colors. To some extent, when talking of the candy, the roll is like a rainbow. Some are sweet and others not so much. And, by the way, throughout this season you'll be receiving a lot of these. Beyond the candy, you'll see all manner of "life savers" in the sanctuary as we progress through Epiphany. Partly because of where we're headed with the Gospel of John. Partly because it's what this season represents. Epiphany...it's a sudden realization, a sudden awakening, something that comes to mind that binds other things together, or a sudden ability to see life in a different way. Those kinds of realizations can change lives, change directions, even save us from any number of things. It's like a guiding light; or maybe a star followed by Wise Men from the East, or the realization that this baby boy would be a king that would save the world. It's a reminder that the gifts brought to Mary, Joseph and Jesus were life saving gifts. They represented both life and death. This Sunday comes the story of a blind man whose life is forever transformed, saved by Jesus. It's a much messier story than other healings; involves spit, and mud, and washing the mud away. How is that an Epiphany. Come and see.

And, Happy New Year! It's a new day in so many ways. This afternoon we welcome a new congregation into our midst. Rock Chinese Church is gathering for their first service in a true sanctuary. They will be here at 1:00pm today. I can't wait to welcome them. It's the first Sunday of a new year and with a New Year come New Year's resolutions; hopes and dreams for greater health, better lives, deeper relationships. It's the day the worship team begins to brainstorm the upcoming season of Lent, and so much more. And for us, may our eyes (hearts) be washed clean, opened to a new road ahead; and may the road in front of us lead us and others toward God as we seek to continue to work in community. To prepare please read John 9:1-7.

Rev. Brad P. Beeman

Lane Dreher spent much of his life helping others, whether as an appliance salesman, business owner, assisting others in fixing things around their homes, fixing things around the church, the parsonage and even at Lazy F and other camps.  He was a servant extraordinaire.  We now have the opportunity to not only continue that legacy but help Lynda and the family as they continue in their transitions.  One January 13, beginning at 9:00 we will be moving the furniture, household items, and other things from the Dreher house on 26th & 156th, to two homes close to Riverton Park United Methodist Church.  The homes will provide shelter for our area's homeless.  These household items, utensils, kitchen appliances, furniture, beds, storage cabinets, and more will continue to serve others very much like Lane did.  We're looking for bodies, pick up trucks, cars, anyone and anything that can help that Saturday.  We'll have a 16 foot U-Haul as well.  This is the ultimate example of Christian recycling; of serving, helping, and participating in the ultimate win-win project.  Please let Brad, Laura, or Wendi know if you might be available to help.  I can't imagine a better way to begin the new year.  Come join the team as we move forward the love of Lane and Lynda, and the love of God.  Thanks!
MINISTRY NEWS
Rock Chinese Church
Shares Our Sanctuary Beginning January 7, 2018
At the November Common Table we announced that Rock Chinese Church had been granted the use of a classroom on Friday mornings for English as a Second Language (ESL)/Communication Classes starting  January 5th. In addition, at the end of the year, the Core Leadership Team voted to grant Rock Chinese Church's request for the use of the Sanctuary on Sundays for worship from 1:00-3:00pm starting on January 7th including the use of the Nursery or a preschool classroom for early childhood education.   Read here for more information about Rock Chinese Church and what the Core Leaders approved.   This is a covenanted partnership between our two churches which effectively takes Christ "Beyond Our Doors" and makes disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.  So l et's welcome Rock to Aldersgate on January 7th.  If you are able to be a part of the welcoming party, please contact  Joe Lee .

The Way of Discernment Book Study
Several small groups within the church are interested in working through a book study in the New Year using the Companions in Christ Series called,  The Way of Discernment. The study is designed to be engaged by a small group over 10 weeks but many options exist for those who find their circumstances different from those envisioned by the authors of the book. From the introduction:
As discerning people of faith, our journeys remain rooted in a bibleical understanding of God's wisdom and guidance. When we ponder scripture... we engage the stories with our whole selves- intellect, emotion, intuition, and will- as we draw on classic practices of scriptural meditation, prayer, and journaling. ... The study focuses on your daily experience of God and your growing capacity to respond to grace with gratitude, trust, love, and self-offering.
Discernment is a practice that will be useful to individuals who face questions about the future as well as to our church as we listen deeply to where the Holy Spirit is calling us. If you or your small group would like to participate in a study of the Way of Discernment, see Pastor Laura so she can coordinate ordering enough copies for participants and leaders.
Gospel of John Class
February 7
The Wednesday class on the Gospel of John taught by Pastor Brad will resume on February 7.  We will commence with chapter 6.  This class is offered at two different times, in the morning from 10:00-11:30am and also in the evening from 7:00-8:30pm - same class at two different times.  The weekly study is divided into three parts and runs through June with some breaks around the holidays.  Yes, the study will build week to week, but every week will also stand on its own, so missing a few weeks her and there will be OK.  Everyone is welcome!

Considering Becoming a Reconciling Congregation
Update on Process to Consider Reconciling Congregations (CRC)
In January, 2018, the pastors will offer a series of Bible studies for anyone interested in participating. There is no need to attend more than one session per week as all six sessions will address the same passages.

Youth SUMYT Retreat
Aldersgate Youth are going to SUMYT!  SUMYT is a youth retreat that is put on by the Seattle United Methodist Youth Team!   (Did you know Aldersgate has 4 youth on the SUMYT team and 1 adult helping to plan this amazing retreat!)  The retreat is at Camp Indianola on Friday, March 16th through Sunday, March 18th.   This year's theme is "Under Construction."  We will have a fun-filled weekend exploring what it means to be a work in progress, growing in love, community and faith. All youth should contact Jen Hoerber with questions and get registered online soon!   The website to register is  www.sumyt2018.eventbrite.com When you register you should c hose the pay later option as the church will pay a portion of the $120 registration fee.

You've seen them at church. Adults that look peaceful and happy when they pray. That kid that knows all of the answers to the questions in Sunday school. That kid that comes up with prayers at youth group that are so good, you think your pastor should take notes! And then there's the during-service knitters, nappers, texters and the bulletin doodlers. The four-year olds that already know "Jesus" is the right answer to every question your pastor asks and the adults that go to Bible study with your parents. They are young and not-so-young and just like you, they are: UNDER CONSTRUCTION!  Every one of us, from the youngest youth to the most mature adult is a work in progress. Our relationships with God, our families and friends don't just magically happen - they are built on foundations of respect, trust and love. And those relationships need regular maintenance in order to thrive. Nobody is born with it all figured out-we learn how to be examples of God's love through the ups and downs of our relationships with others.
