Dear Lycée Parent / Guardian,

Happy New Year! It was great to see our students returning from a two week break this morning. And almost everyone of them had big smiles! It is my hope that the holiday period enabled you to spend quality time with your children. Nothing is quite as good to create wonderful memories as having time to be together in a relaxed setting engaged in conversation and finding reasons to laugh. Thank you for giving your children those opportunities. When children come to school happy, they are more likely open to the learning experiences their teachers have prepared for them.

In New Orleans we move from one celebration to another, and Saturday marks the beginning of Carnival!  And often our thoughts move immediately to King Cake, that delicious treat that we New Orleanians can't seem to get enough of.  Scientific research, however, is clearer than ever that sugar does tremendous harm to our bodies when consumed in large quantities. For this reason we limit our students' exposure to sugar. King Cakes are not permitted to in our classrooms as daily student snacks. We do allow teachers to use King Cakes for instructional purposes, which allows students to enjoy the treat. And our students enjoy King Cake on the last day of school before the Mardi Gras break, Friday, February 9.  At no other time should King Cakes come into the buildings. We feel that parents are best suited for deciding how much of the sweet treat their children can have, and we feel that the home is the best place for that to happen.

Wishing you a year filled with much happiness,

Keith
