Welcome Back & Happy New Year!

Thank you to our community for the tremendous outpouring of support for the firefighters and first responders who helped protect our homes, pets, and land during the historic and unforgettable Thomas Fire event. Our hearts are with the families who lost their homes, ranches, livestock, and property.  Stay tuned for more on ways we will be fundraising to help those affected by the fire, including a beloved alum family, the Gonzalez Family.

Thank you, parents, students, teachers and staff, for your understanding and
flexibility as we rescheduled events to accommodate our school closure in December.  To gain back the seven days of valuable classroom time we lost, we are reducing our Spring Break by a week and will return on April 2 (when public schools start up again). We believe this is in the best interest of our students, and we are committed to fulfilling our mission and the promise we made to each student and family in our "Deal Meeting" to go the extra mile and to provide the best middle school learning experience possible.

Please note the following events which have been re-scheduled:

HILLBILLY ELEGY: A MEMOIR OF A FAMILY AND CULTURE IN CRISIS by J.D. Vance
JOIN THE CONVERSATION!
Discussion: Thursday morning, January 18, 2018
Copies are now available for purchase in the office and library

"You will not read a more important book about America this year."-The Economist

"Hillbilly Elegy is a pas-
sionate and personal analysis of the loss of the American dream for a large segment of this country. The decline of white working-class Americans, a demographic that has been slowly disintegrating over forty years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm -- but never before written about as searingly from the inside. Former marine and Yale Law School graduate J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck."

PARENT ASSOCIATION
Welcome Back Parents!

I hope you all had a wonderful Winter Break celebrating the holidays with your families.

I am pleased to announce a special speaker for our next PA meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 10 at 7 pm.  The topic is " Transition Years-Parenting Boys into Men." SBMS welcomes back  Dr. Steve Smith. He is an associate professor of clinical psychology in the Department of Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology at UCSB and a licensed psychologist in private practice ( www.sparccal.com). His clinical and academic work focuses on the psychological needs of boys and men, healthy youth sport participation, and mental health needs of athletes.

The presentation will be on how parents can navigate these transitional waters from childhood to adolescence in order to raise psychologically and physically healthy boys who will become sensitive and strong men. What does research tell us about this period of time and how parents and teachers might best communicate with boys? This isn't just for parents with boys; we can all learn more about the psychology of boys and manhood to help us with nephews, brothers, cousins and yes, even our husbands. Please feel free to bring a friend. With what is happening in the world, timing couldn't be better for Steve to shed some light on the psychology of men and boys!

Please don't miss the Fall Media Show on January 4! The faculty and students do an incredible job of capturing the essence of the Fall Trip through video, song and stories. It is a great affirmation of everything we love about SBMS!

Join us for our first Sunrise Swim of 2018 this  Friday, Jan. 5, at 6:45 am at Leadbetter Beach.  Bring your mug for warm coffee, and as always there will be donuts!

Thank you to Adela Barcia for a wonderful December PA meeting filled with great insight and sharing.

Looking forward to seeing everyone back at school as we start to get ready for March Expeditions with trip prep Fridays, and as we look forward to Songfest in April and the Auction in May.

Happy New Year!!

Warmly,
Heather Copp, PA Chair
