FLASH Partners Head to New Orleans for 2017 National Hurricane Conference
FLASH partners turned out in force to participate in the
2017 National Hurricane Conference (NHC) in New Orleans with exposition booths, general session panels, media rap sessions, and workshops.
Back by popular demand, the media rap session focused on Connecting the Communicators-A Dialogue with Messengers from Academia, Emergency Management, Meteorology, News Media, and More.
The well-attended session brought together news media, emergency managers, information officers, and national meteorology leaders to examine the latest trends and challenges in hurricane messaging before, during, and after a storm. Speakers discussed hurricane amnesia versus hysteria and explored the challenges of evacuation and flood insurance in advance of catastrophic events.

Building Code Initiative Helps Boost Resilience in American Samoa
Unexpected interruptions like a fire alarm, power outage, or even breaking news are sometimes a part of the routine business day. But there was nothing routine for FLASH SVP Mike Rimoldi while he was nearly 7,000 miles away in American Samoa last month.
Mike was teaching a seismic building code training course when the students requested a 30-minute break to follow the
fautasi
race, a sport where longboats powered by oars compete.
American Samoa interest in fautasi is similar to the United States interest in the World Series.

San Francisco Summit Highlights Businesses and Emergency Management
During April, FLASH VP of Outreach Barbara Harrison spoke at the inaugural Epicenter 2017 Summit hosted by the San Francisco Emergency Management Foundation. With estimates that 75 percent of organizations without a disaster recovery plan will fail within three years of a major disaster, Harrison focused on the impact to businesses from disasters and the need for engagement between emergency management and the business community as partners in response and recovery.

Mike Rimoldi joined architect Erik Jester from +Lab Architects, David Shepherd from PCA, and Joel May from BASF Corporation for a panel presentation during the 2017 AIA Annual Conference last month in Orlando. The gentlemen delivered an update on the rebuild of the Breezy Point, NY
#HurricaneStrong Home damaged by Superstorm Sandy in 2012.
The session highlighted aspects that architects could use as a model for resilient construction when rebuilding after major storms. They addressed the history of the house rebuild, flood resistant features, new techniques and innovations used, and the project's relationship to the greater #HurricaneStrong
campaign.

Rancho Mirage QuakeSmart Draws Big Crowd to Seismic Safety
"The next
big California earthquake is coming," said Kate Long from the Governor's Office of Emergency Services at
the recent Rancho Mirage QuakeSmart Preparedness Workshop. She likens the prediction to the "Winter is coming" doomsday mantra from the TV series "Game of Thrones," and hopes that those in harm's way are listening.
And Kate is right. We may not know exactly when the next big earthquake is coming, but it is inevitable-a forecast echoed throughout the seismic science community in Southern California.

Partner Spotlight - David Halstead
With 47 years of experience as a first responder and many other duties in emergency services, David Halstead has seen a lot during his career. From the burning of the Fern Park Jai
Alai Fronton in 1972 in Palm Beach, FL, the Seminole County (FL) Jail fire in 1975, the Sanford, FL Amtrak train station fire in 1991, and Hurricane Andrew in 1992, he remembers most of Florida's major fire and storm disasters during the last 50 years.
When Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005, he was working in emergency services, and in 2010 he coordinated Florida's Deepwater Horizon project. Now, in 2017, after 18 consecutive years of faithful service on the FLASH Board of Directors, David is taking the next step in his long and fruitful career: retirement. In honor of his career and this special occasion, we invited David to share stories about his years of service in the field.

Register Now for Southern California QuakeSmart Workshops
With scientists forecasting a 75 percent chance of a magnitude 7 or higher earthquake striking Southern California in the next 30 years, FLASH and FEMA are offering additional
QuakeSmart Preparedness Workshops to help businesses and organizations get ready.
During the workshops on May 16 in Long Beach and May 18 in Los Angeles, attendees will learn how to:
- Identify risk by learning about business continuity, disaster response, and the cost benefits of preparing for earthquakes and other business interruptions;
- Develop a plan to identify preparedness and mitigation actions needed to ensure the safety of their employees and customers, as well as conduct assessments and begin to plan for retrofit projects; and
- Take action to learn how to perform disaster preparedness and mitigation activities.
Both Los Angeles-area workshops will feature Deputy Director for the U.S. Small Business Administration Ben Raju and Los Angeles Chief Resilience Officer Marisa Aho.
