  The Economics of Happiness

Join us for a FREE movie screening of 'The Economics of Happiness'.

The Economics of Happiness describes a world moving simultaneously in two opposing directions. On the one hand, government and big business continue to promote globalisation and the consolidation of corporate power. At the same time, all around the world people are resisting those policies, demanding a re-regulation of trade and finance-and, far from the old institutions of power, they're starting to forge a very different future. Communities are coming together to re-build more human scale, ecological economies based on a new paradigm - an economics of localisation.

The Economics of Happiness restores our faith in humanity and challenges us to believe that it is possible to build a better world.

Engage in lively discussion after the movie to share your impressions of the movie and thoughts on how we as a community could move forward.

Natural Burials - returning to the earth naturally

Did you miss our last Common Thread session on Natural Burials?

Robert Pitt, CEO of Adelaide Cemeteries Authority, provided a very informative and engaging session on Natural Burials and much more!

The audience really appreciated his open and sensitive manner and willingness to answer any questions.

Robert would like to open up the conversation about death, dying, funerals, etc and is offering to come talk to groups of people. Maybe you have a community group who would be interested in hearing more?

If so, please contact the Adelaide Cemeteries Authority.

See below for the presentation.

E- Waste Recycling @ Bunnings Marion

Unplug N' Drop is a new initiative to provide convenient hubs for recycling electrical waste items in many areas of Adelaide. Anything that has a power cord or uses a battery is considered e-waste and has many recoverable resources in its components.

A new Unplug N' Drop hub has arrived locally at Bunnings Marion for FREE e-waste recycling. The cage is located just inside the southern entrance to the store as pictured.

This new initiative of Minda Inc. helps to support workers with disabilities and protect the environment.

All items are recycled at their warehouse in Underdale.

Saving a little fan flowered native

The City of Marion is home to possibly the last population of Bundled Fanflower (Scaevola linearis subsp confertifolia) in the Mount Lofty Ranges.

This species that is found in drier mallee habitats is reasonably common in some areas out on the plains near Strathalbyn, however it is thought that the species is possibly extinct in the Mount Lofty Ranges.

A small population of less than ten plants is tucked away at Hallett Headland reserve

This year we worked with Trees For Life to secure this population for future replanting, Trees For Life have taken five cuttings which they have been growing in their nursery at Brooklyn Park. These plants are to be used as parent plants for further cuttings with the aim of supplying over 100 plants in the next three years to replant in areas of the Hallett Headland.

The joint initiative is a fantastic conservation project that will hopefully secure the Bundled Fanflower in the Mount Lofty Ranges for many years to come.

Grow FREE - sharing produce across Adelaide

Grow FREE is a new initiative where carts of FREE food/produce are shared amongst the community. Carts can be found at shops or in people's front yards and people are welcome to come and grab something from it that they need. They are also welcome to donate food/produce that they have in excess.

Below is little bit about Grow FREE, in their own words from their Facebook page:

Do you believe our food should be free, organic and locally grown? Come and join a group of people working together to make life for future generations full of good health and abundance. We have unwittingly disconnected from the most important aspect of living - our food, and our disconnection from our food has created an underlying and pervasive sickness in the community.

Currently our "food" is sprayed with poisonous chemicals, grown in depleted soil, transported huge distances, altered or gassed for longevity, processed beyond recognition, has ingredients we can't pronounce, wrapped in plastic and expensive.
When it could and should be grown in vigorous soil, grown locally, picked recently, be clear of chemicals and toxins and FREE!

Currently, there is one cart in City of Marion at Trott Park. If you are interested in starting one in your local area - hop on to the Grow FREE facebook page to find out more.

P.S. A big thanks to the community member that drew my attention to this initiative. If you ever see or hear something you like that sounds interesting and is to do with sustainability - I would love to hear about it! Just send me an email.

Important and interesting questions for gardeners include: Why are plants arranged into families, and what features do they share? What are plants made of, and how do they grow? Why does soil type and nutrient availability affect plant health? How do seeds know when to germinate, and how does the environment shape the way plants grow? What determines when plants flower and set seed?

Answers to all these questions and more when you study Science of Gardening.
