The  Every Student Present  website has been modified to include more comprehensive information and tools for parents and educators.  The section of the website designed for parents offers a wide range of information for dealing with the many issues that keep children from school. The  Educators and Community Coalitions section  offers extensive information, how-to strategies and resources for reducing chronic absence.  

Every Student Present is a public awareness campaign developed by the Council on Children and Families.

The Newest KWIC Data Tools! June 20th

The Kids Well-being Indicator Clearinghouse (KWIC) team will present a webinar on a new data tool & planning resources. 

These
are some of the newest KWIC data tools: 
  • A Look at Mass Incarceration & Re-Entry in Our Communities 
  • Education by the Numbers - Fact Sheets for each NY Congressional District 
  • The Mental, Emotional, Behavioral (MEB) health planning indicators for your county.  
  • Home Visiting Program Capacity Map 
  • Demographic Data for Different Boundaries (political and municipal)

The Kids' Well-being Indicators Clearinghouse (KWIC), developed by CCF, is designed to advance the use of children's health, education and well-being indicators as a tool for policy development, planning, and accountability.

The New York State Parent Guide - July 19th

What new parent hasn't wished that a baby came with an instruction manual? While the New York State Council on Children and Families' new Parent Guide is not exactly an owner's manual, it's a close second.  The Parent Guide -- Starting Life Together: Your Guide for Building a Nurturing, Healthy Relationship with Your Child -- offers key parenting tips, before and after your child arrives, up to age five. 
  The Parenting Guide focuses on five key parenting behaviors: nurturing, protecting, guiding, communicating and supporting children's curiosity and learning. Expectant mothers can access important advice on exercise, nutrition and other healthy habits during pregnancy. Parents will find information on typical behavior for the  age of their child and fun ways to encourage their child's healthy development. Included are valuable resources on safe sleep, use of car seats, breastfeeding and dental care, among others.
 
Come learn how you can help your friends, clients and neighbors find important information on how to obtain health insurance; locate child care and preschool, parent education and support programs.

New York State School Board Association (NYSSBA) Supports Alternatives to Suspension
Under the new federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), states may include school climate or elements of school climate --  such as suspension rates, absenteeism and school safety -- among the "school quality indicators" they would monitor and use to help schools improve. The recent NYSSBA report aligns with the ESSA and highlights best practices for restorative justice implementation in school districts based on survey findings, literature and feedback from higher education scholars, superintendents and practitioners in the field. Read the full report .  Also, follow the this issue and the US Department of Education on social media #rethinkdiscipline.
