Signs Offer a Glimpse into Newcastle's 
Rich Coal Mining History
The City of Newcastle, in partnership with the Newcastle Historical Society, installed three signs at historic points across the city. The interpretive signs teach visitors about the history of local landmarks like the Historic Coal Miner's Cemetery and China Creek.
Newcastle Remembers Deputy Herzog on Peace Officers Memorial Day

May 15 is National Peace Officers Memorial Day, a date that pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.

In Newcastle, it's a time to remember KCSO Deputy Rich Herzog who 15-years ago this June, was  killed in the line of duty along Coal Creek Parkway.

CrossTown Trail Sees Improvements

A one-mile section of the CrossTown Trail (between Beit Tikvah/136th Avenue Southeast and the Terrace Trail near Cougar Mountain Park) is now walkable for sure-footed hikers. Trail users can now traverse town all the way from Hazelwood Park to Cougar Mountain.

The work done on this eastern segment of the trail opens up opportunities to make connections that weren't there before. It also is a very significant step toward the idea of a long-distance trail traversing our town

City staff will present the proposed Downtown Strategic Plan, Police Chief Melinda Irvine will give her quarterly police report and more at the May 16 Newcastle City Council meeting.
Energize Eastside Phase 2 Draft EIS Released

The Energize Eastside Phase 2 Draft EIS was issued and made available to the public on May 8. There will be a series of public hearings and the public has 45 days to comment on it.

The first public hearing is 6-8:30 p.m. May 23 at Hazen High School.


Public Hearings Set for Downtown Strategic Plan Adoption

The public will have two opportunities to comment on the final iteration of the  Downtown Strategic Plan  as the city prepares to amend Newcastle's Comprehensive Plan and Municipal Code to comply with the plan's vision.

Public hearings are set for May 24 and June 20.


City Seeking Applicants for Community Activities Commission

Get involved in your city and join the Community Activities Commission.

The Commission is made up of seven residents who make events like Concerts in the Park and Newcastle Days possible, coordinate volunteer activities, and advise the city on recreational, historical and artistic programs and improvements to the city's parks and trails.
Friends Group Hosts Annual Book Sale

The Friends of the Newcastle Library  is back with its annual Book Sale May 17-20.

Bid on silent auction items, browse thousands of books and media for purchase, and learn about the Friends and their contribution to the Newcastle community. 


Explore the Newcastle Cemetery on Memorial Day

This Memorial Day, visitors are invited to explore the Newcastle Historic Coal Miner's Cemetery. 

The normally closed final resting place of Newcastle's pioneers welcomes visitors to explore the city's history at 2 p.m. May 29, when Vickie Baima Olson, a descendent of Italian immigrants who came to Newcastle in the late 1800s, will lead a tour of the cemetery.
