Global Hacking Attack Infects 57,000 Computers in Over 100 Countries
Dozens of UK Hospitals Plunge Into Chaos
WH
According to Reuters in a 5.13.17 post:

Capitalizing on spying tools believed to have been developed by the U.S. National Security Agency, the cyber assault launched on Friday has infected tens of thousands of computers in 104 countries, with Britain's health system suffering the worst known disruptions.
...Cyber extortionists tricked victims into opening malicious malware attachments to spam emails that seemed to contain invoices, job offers, security warnings and other legitimate files.
...The ransomware encrypted data on the computers, demanding payments of $300 to $600 to restore access.

According to UK based Express in a post that same day:

A MASSIVE cyber attack has targeted NHS < National Health Service> sites across the country with ransomware, plunging them into chaos.
...Some 48 hospitals are understood to have been affected...37 hospitals the NHS has revealed have been attacked directly and those that shut down their systems as a precaution...

WIM
According to Matt Gracey, CEO of Delray Beach based Danna-Gracey:

Ransomware attacks are now escalating geometrically in numbers around the globe. Unfortunately American healthcare practices are one of the latest focuses of these attacks and the monetary demands are much more than it appears the hackers are demanding from those in the UK and Europe. Even small medical practices are experiencing these attacks across the US. Besides the monetary demands of the hackers, healthcare practices here are also required to report these attacks as a HIPAA privacy breach and face regulatory issues.
I cannot stress enough the importance of procuring comprehensive cyber insurance coverage, not only for the cost issues associated with ransomware attacks but also for an immediate response plan as well as coverage for loss of practice revenues because of the practice down town during these cyber challenges. Cyber insurance coverage is quickly evolving so make sure your agent is knowledgeable in the latest specialized options available to protect your medical practice.
Fentanyl Deaths Drive Medical Examiners Report
WH
Nick Evans reporting for Health News Florida on 5.12.17:

Florida's medical examiners are seeing a precipitous rise in fentanyl deaths. They recently published their interim 2016 report on drug-related fatalities.

WIM
According to the article:

The Drugs Identified in Deceased Persons report compiles toxicology results for almost 5400 people across the first six months of 2016. Stephen Nelson is the Polk County medical examiner and chairs the state board. He explains incidents of the drug have almost doubled, and deaths tied to fentanyl or its analogs have risen by 139 percent.
"All of the medical examiners' offices in the state of Florida are seeing a tremendous increase in drug deaths," Nelson says, "and they are largely led by fentanyl and the fentanyl analogs-the drugs that are made with fentanyl as the basis for them."
