Message From the Chair-Elect

I was truly honoured this past February to be named Chair-Elect by the Board of Directors of the Dufferin Board of Trade (DBOT). This great organization has been an integral part of the fabric of the business community in Dufferin for over a century. In this time, DBOT has grown and strengthened in its resolve. As always DBOT remains committed to being first and foremost, your voice.

I look forward to leading this organization with a continued focus on the importance of community partnership and collaboration. Our Board of Trade is unique in that we maintain strong relationships with our municipalities who know they can rely on us to represent the interest of the business community. DBOT will continue to ensure your interests are well represented at all levels of government. Under my Chairmanship, DBOT will continue to support the work being done at the Ontario Chamber of Commerce that helps to shape the policies that directly affect the business community in Dufferin. There is no doubt that the internet has revolutionized how the world conducts business. We are now seeing businesses thriving in fields that did not exist 20, 10 or even 5 years ago. As the business world moves further into the realm of online-internet based commerce, I will ensure that DBOT remains focused on supporting the high-speed connectivity and accessibility initiatives within the County and the Province.

In closing, I extend my gratitude to my colleague Joe Andrews for his time and leadership as Chair of the Dufferin Board of Trade over these past two years. I look forward to working with Joe in his new capacity as Past-Chair. In addition, I look positively on the opportunity to work with all the Directors and the staff of the Dufferin Board of Trade, and of course to serving you, our proud members.

Pete Renshaw, Chair Elect
Dufferin Board of Trade

Dufferin Board of Trade Participates at 2017 OCC AGM

More than 168 people congregated in Sarnia from May 4 through 7 at the OCC's AGM & Convention. The program was filled with informative plenary sessions, dynamic workshops and great opportunities for connecting with colleagues from around the province.

More than 35 policy resolutions were tabled, debated and voted on to form the next policy resolution compendium helping to frame the advocacy agenda for the OCC in the coming years. Attendees also heard from the Premier, the Leader of the Official Opposition, and the Leader of the Ontario NDP on their policy positions.

The Dufferin Board of Trade was present to help to form the next policy agenda ensuring that the voice of business in Dufferin was well represented.

Provincial
Ontario Budget 2017 - Back to Balance but Not to Prudence

In response to  Budget 2017 , the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) and the Dufferin Board of Trade expressed concern that there is no clear path for long-term fiscal prudence, while commending the government for Ontario's first balanced budget since the global recession. While there is no deficit over the planning period, there is also no plan for surplus. Given that, downward payment on the debt will be pushed beyond the medium-term. This will place tremendous fiscal burden on future generations and considerable pressure on future economic planning.

Ontario's revenues rely on the level and pace of economic activity of the province, but Budget 2017 offers limited vision for how to ensure that private-sector economic growth will continue to rise. Promised Corporate Income Tax rate relief, which the government paused following the economic downturn, were not reinstated. In the 2009 budget, the province pledged to reduce the Corporate Income Tax (CIT) rate to 10 percent by 2013. Within ten years it was estimated that the value of this CIT reduction would see Ontario benefit by increased capital investment of $47 billion, increased annual incomes of $29.4 billion and an estimated 591,000 net new jobs. However, the CIT reduction promise was halted in 2012 in light of the province's deteriorating fiscal situation, and so the CIT rate remained at 11.5 percent.

One bright spot in Budget 2017  were details provided around the clear commitment by Ontario's private sector to providing job growth for the province. The budget suggests that 98 percent of all new jobs since the recession in Ontario have been full time, and 78 percent in above-average wage industries. This positive economic activity by Ontario's private sector demonstrates a clear commitment to good, quality jobs throughout our province.
