"Helping the World Discover Adel" - Vol. 101 March 2017
My Grandmother ran the local Hobby Shop where I grew up. Her house always had twenty or so projects in varying states of completion. There was never an item that she couldn't turn into a masterpiece. Today we call that upcycling, Gram called it Art.

I think Gram would have found Laurie Bever of Decor Adel a kindred spirit. We had the pleasure of interviewing Lauri this month and if you haven't stopped by Decor Adel yet, I highly recommend a visit to her shop the next time you're in town.

So grab a cup of coffee, there's a lot to cover this month and we look forward to seeing you in Adel.

This month we spoke with owner Laurie Bever of the new gift shop and home store, Decor Adel located south of the downtown square along Hwy 169.

Opened in November, the home furnishing store offers farmhouse chic decor and gifts. Customers say they are surprised by the variety of new, handmade, and gently used vintage items such as wreaths, sculptures, jewelry, crystal, dried and fresh flowers, greenery, hand painted Adel signs, holiday decor and more.

Laurie is a homegrown Iowan while her husband grew up in Adel. The couple recently moved to Adel to be near friends and family.

"We lived in West Des Moines and it got to the point that we wanted to try something different, something less busy, so we came back to a small town. We really enjoy it, we found a great house, and everything we need is nearby."

Decor Adel - Adel Iowa

Laurie graduated from Iowa State with a double major in Journalism and Home Furnishings. For 30+ years Laurie was in marketing, advertising, and PR promoting brands and products. The transition to her own business developed from these experiences.

"In my last position I was in charge of national advertising for the National Pork Board. I worked a lot with HGTV creating special ad promotions and I became a big fan. Home interiors have always been a passion for me. I've always made pillows and curtains, you know, things for my home and other people. I've always had this interest and the opportunity became available to make a change. We moved here and it all came together."

Decor Adel - Adel Iowa

"I had been thinking about my own store for a few years while I developed a business plan. I recognized the need that Adel doesn't have many retail stores. I hope I can fill a little niche for what people are looking for and help bring people back to shopping locally for gifts and fun items for themselves."

Decor Adel - Adel Iowa
"My inspiration comes from the 'Fixer Upper' show on HGTV and Magnolia Farms' slightly rustic feel.

The items I had made for the store are things you would see on those shows such as ladder shelves, wall frames where you can hang wreaths, and benches all made by an Adel resident.

I have a nice collection of hand painted Adel signs. I like to help people visualize how they can use those things they see and like from renovation homes."

In addition to the items on display, Laurie helps search and find home accessories for customers. She does not charge an additional fee for this service, as she is thrilled to help customers find the perfect item they couldn't find elsewhere. She also provides home staging services.

"I like to have relationships with my customers. If there is something they were hoping to find but didn't I help them find it. I've helped people find different pictures, specific types and sizes of clocks, and special items for graduation such as custom pallets to display photo collages. I have the time to do that and I want people to know Decor Adel provides a custom fit for them."

Laurie enjoys following trends such as the arrow motif that is popular now. She plans to continue watching trends and providing items you can find elsewhere. The collection reflects the changing seasons and upcoming holidays. The best way to see new items is to stop in or visit the Facebook page.

"I want people to know the store is affordable and reasonably priced. I want items that are within reach for people. People are very complementary about the pricing and the items they found. Its a nice surprise for them."

Decor Adel - Adel Iowa
"The people that visit the store range from 20s to retirees. It's a wide range of people and everyone is looking for something a little different. I think there is something for everybody at Decor Adel. The store is a destination- a small shop in a small town.

Many customers are in town for appointments or renewing their license. They stop in and usually find something for himself or herself or someone else.

I'm excited to have more people from Adel learning about us. I urge people to find us and discover the store with something for everybody!"

Please join us in welcoming Laurie and Decor Adel to our growing community. Meet Laurie and check out the fun collection Tuesdays through Fridays 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Iowa Severe Weather Awareness Week 27th - 31st

Spring storm season is just around the corner, so now is the time to prepare.

Iowa experiences snow storms, tornadoes, flooding and other severe weather every year, many times striking with very little warning.

Severe Weather Awareness Week is an annual event to remind Iowans that severe weather is part of living in our state and that understanding the risks and how to respond to them can save lives.

LSB Insurance is proud to support Severe Weather Awareness Week and encourages everyone to:
  • Make a Plan - create a family communication plan, know the emergency plan for your work place.
  • Build a Kit - put together an emergency kit and be sure that everyone in your home knows where it is.
  • Be Aware - Pay attention to the news. Invest in a NOAA weather radio to receive weather alerts. Install weather or emergency alerts on your mobile phone.
Call Lori or Josh to review your coverage before the next storm strikes!

ADM Alumni Association - Adel Iowa
ADM Alumni Association Celebrates Milestone!

The ADM Alumni Association is celebrating 20 years of service to the ADM Alumni community in 2017.

A generous donation from a successful joint class reunion, "The 1996 Cornstalk Reunion", got the group off the ground and shortly after enthusiasm took hold with a group of Alumni who had a strong vision to serve fellow classmates.

Of the eleven founding members, six original members still serve on the board today. The current board represents Alumni graduating from 1958 to 2003.

ADM Alumni Golf Tournament
Being "in business" for 20 years has allowed the group to accomplish an impressive amount.

The Association maintains a database of Alumni and creates a bi-annual newsletter to reach members.

They maintain an informative website and Facebook page displaying Alumni content. The group hosts an annual Alumni golf outing and reunion and supports the ADM Athletic Hall of Fame subcommittee.

The group's welcome banners line the Adel streets every Summer.

ADM Alumni Association
A Senior composites display case located in the high school commons is a product of the Association. They're proud to have created an Alumni Veteran's Memorial, also on display in the school.

The group looks forward to supporting future special projects within the growing ADM Community while continuing to be a base resource in keeping all Alumni connected and informed.

Members make it possible for the ADM Alumni Association to give back to the school and community they love. They encourage all Alumni who are not yet members to join by visiting admalumni.com

Community Visioning Host Public Input Session March 25th

Adel's Community Visioning Committee Seeks Resident Input Regarding Transportation Needs and Opportunities within the Community

Adel is participating in the 2017 Iowa's Living Roadways Community Visioning Program.

Community Visioning is a transportation enhancement planning process that serves Iowa communities with a population of 10,000 or fewer residents.

The program helps community volunteers envision aesthetic and ecological improvements along roadsides and related landscapes by blending environmental stewardship with community improvement projects. Adel is one of ten communities selected to participate in this award-winning program in 2017.

At its initial meetings, the Adel Visioning Committee learned about public involvement techniques they will use during the Community Visioning process to assess local resources and identify community needs. The information gathered will be used to develop a transportation concept plan.

The next step in the process will be a focus group workshop taking place on March 25th at the First Christian Church. Residents are invited to attend the focus group that best describes them to share ideas about transportation needs and opportunities for Adel in a small group setting. Refreshments will be provided.

10:00am: Parents and Children
11:00am: Mobility Impaired

Recipes From Home
Recipe of the Month -
Rueben Burgers

My first restaurant job in "the Big City" was working for world renown Kris Kristoffersen, the chef not the singer.
Chef was short, Swedish and had a temper that makes Gordon Ramsey of Hell's Kitchen, look like a saint.

As part of our initiation period we were forbidden to use knives. Instead, we were issued metal spatulas to cut sandwiches and prep with until we "earned the right to bear arms", Chef's words, not mine.

One afternoon, I had the brilliant idea to hone the edge of my spatula to a nice cutting edge using the Chef's knife sharpener. The other guys thought this was a great idea and soon we all had shiny sharp spats.

Later that week - Kenny Rogers (Yes, the singer) was in the restaurant, and of all the fancy things on the menu, ordered a burger. Unimpeded, Chef was determined to serve Mr. Rogers himself. The order was nearly finished as Chef entered the line, took the spatula from my hand, and swiped to pick up the burger from the grill. In his haste he slipped and caught the burger at the half point neatly slicing it in half sending the top across the grill!

My parents martial status was questioned as Chef grabbed another burger form the grill and huffed out of the kitchen. I was later detailed with dulling all the spatulas against the table edge and washing them by hand as punishment.

When I think back to that story I laugh heartily, and a small part of me misses the chaos of working at restaurants... very small.

This month we bring you the Rueben burger in honor of those late night creations.

Rueben Burgers
Ingredients:
1 can Sauerkraut
Thousand Island Dressing (see below)
1/2 lb. Swiss Cheese
8 Rye Buns
1/2 lb. Corned Beef, sliced into strips
1 lb. Ground Beef (the good stuff)
1/8 tsp Caraway Seeds
1 white Onion, minced
1 clove Garlic, minced
1/8 tsp Salt & Pepper

Thousand Island Dressing:
1/2 C. Mayo
2 T. Ketchup
2 T. Chopped Pickles
1 tsp. Onions, finely chopped
1 Dash of Worcestershire
1 Dash of Salt
1 Dash of Pepper

Mix well and cover. Refrigerate for one l hour. Stir before using.
Combine Ground Beef with Caraway Seeds, Onion, Garlic, Salt and Pepper.  Form into 4 patties.

Grill or pan fry the burgers. Remove from the heat and top with Swiss Cheese.

Place a lid over the burgers to let the cheese melt and retain heat.

Meanwhile, pan heat the Corned Beef and Sauerkraut together.

Slice Rye Buns and spread with Thousand Island Dressing.

Place the burger and top with Corned Beef and sauerkraut mixture.

Serve with home fries and a dill pickle spear.

Enjoy!
Terry Traveller Bagpipes
Terry on the Emerald Isle

Top of the morning to ye dear friends it is I, Terry Traveler. This March I bring you good tidings from the wondrous, Emerald Isle- Ireland.

This beautiful land reminds me of Iowa, what with the castles and barns. The weather seems pretty much the same, and the people are just as nice.

It took a great deal of explaining in broken Gaelic to the kind Inn Keeper who spoke English that I had no need for the wool sweater and Cinnamon Sticks I accidentally ordered from room service. When my meal finally arrived, I received a Tayto Sandwich: two pieces of white bread, buttered, with potato chips inside. It wasn't the blood sausage I ordered, but it was tasty. I later discovered this is a modern Irish delicacy.

The next day I spoke again with the friendly Inn Keeper who blamed the mishap on the neighborhood leprechauns who must have messed with the order.  In a land as lush and green as Ireland, it is not surprising to hear stories of leprechauns- wee people of magic and cobbling living the life of faeries. Yes, the tiny shoemakers, the Inn Keeper said, love dancing so much they are in constant need of new footwear. In my experience, the wisest of whom simply chooses to go barefoot.

On my third day in Ireland I met Bartley and fine chap he was. Standing a mere two feet tall, with a long red beard and a wildly mischievous look in his eyes. We hit it off right away. As legend goes, once caught, a leprechaun will grant three wishes in exchange for their freedom. My wishes were simple- that I be healthy, that my family be happy, and a third wish I poorly phrased which now means I can never remove my beloved orange parka. Luckily, I own stock in Febreeze.

This is Terry Traveler saying, it may not be true but this time we can blame it on the blarney stone.
