January 2018

Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to 2018! Let's start the year off on a high note with an update on the progress of the revisions of the Ohio Principal Standards.

OAESA, OASSA, and the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) worked together to create an advisory group targeted at identifying what is (and is not) working well for Ohio principals. This group was charged with studying the demands of the principalship, as well as the barriers of effective administration and the supports available to help principals succeed. The key takeaway from this process was the need to review, redefine, and revise the precise role of the principal, using the current Ohio Standards for Principals and standards from the National Policy Board for Educational Administration.

A second group was formed in Fall 2017 to begin this revision process, focusing on precisely defining the role of the principal and eliminating gaps in the current standards. I'm pleased to share that this work has resulted in a draft revision that will be presented to the Educator Standards Board in January 2018. We anticipate that this draft will be recommended for a final approval process, with roll-out and awareness-building starting with the 2018-19 school year. We anticipate no changes to OPES for the next school year.

Many thanks to these OAESA members who joined us in the important work of advocating for Ohio principals: Mike Bader, Abbey Bolton, Bob Buck, Kori Kawczynski, Jonathan Muro, Kirk Pavelich, and Rhonda Peeples.

Sincerely,

Julie Davis, EdD

Striving Readers Grants Available

Ohio received a $35 million Striving Readers Comprehensive Literacy Grant from the US Department of Education to continue improving language and literacy development in Ohio students. Approximately 95 percent of the award will go directly to local districts and community schools or early childhood providers to improve literacy for children from birth through grade 12. The focus of the three-year grant is to serve the greatest number of students with disabilities, students living in poverty, English learners and students who have reading disabilities.

ODE is hosting a two-day Literacy Academy in Columbus Jan. 17-18 for those who are eligible to apply. Academy participants will receive technical assistance with their applications, as well as instruction on improving evidence-based language and literacy instruction and interventions.

The Ohio Arts Council Announces New Arts Learning Grant, TeachArtsOhio
Deadline to apply is February 1.

The Ohio Arts Council (OAC) is pleased to announce its newest arts learning grant opportunity known as TeachArtsOhio. O pen to all Ohio public, private, charter, and parochial schools, TeachArtsOhio's goal is to expand learning opportunities through the arts and increase academic achievement across the state. The grant provides funding to support professional teaching artists to teach in schools and classrooms for up to the full 2018-19 school year at no cost to the school district. One hundred percent of the artist fees are paid for using OAC funds, alleviating financial burdens from school and district budgets. Teaching artists will work with school faculty and staff to bring their education communities together to share engaging, personal, high-quality arts learning experiences.

FREE WORKSHOPS: Best practices in the K-8 math classroom using the research of John Hattie

John Hattie has completed over 1,400 meta-analyses of 80,000 studies, which includes 300 million students. Through this research, he has compiled a list of influences on student achievement, from the ones that allow for the most growth in a single school year, down to the influences with a negative impact. Using the research of John Hattie, teachers can ensure they are using the most impactful strategies in the mathematics classroom. Sessions will include:
  • Questioning Strategies
  • Learning Intentions and Success Criteria- Creating Success Through Student Self-Assessment
  • Connecting Big Ideas for Young Mathematicians--When Rigor and Relevance Meet Collaboration
The workshops are offered FREE for OAESA members and their teachers, curriculum leaders, and coaches, thanks to the generosity of our corporate partner, National Geographic Learning.
