Kentucky Artisan Center Exhibits and Demonstrations

"225: Artists Celebrate Kentucky's History"

New Exhibit! (Through September 23rd)

The Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea will honor the 225th Anniversary of Kentucky becoming a state, with the exhibit 225: Artists Celebrate Kentucky's History.
Kentucky has always cherished its history. The preservation of Kentucky stories, places and traditions has shaped its culture today. This exhibit includes over 60 works by 51 Kentucky artists who have recorded and celebrated numerous facets of Kentucky's rich 225-year history.

These works capture the essence of Kentucky - including its historical places, people, events, state commerce, agriculture and the state's unique flora and fauna. Accompanied by written stories and histories in each artist's words, this exhibit entices the viewer visually and verbally.

Covering Kentucky history from 1775 to the present, this exhibit includes portraits of famous Kentuckians from Daniel Boone to Mohammed Ali.

Viewing this exhibit brings Kentucky history to life with sculptures, images and words from 51 Kentucky artists.

"Reveal: Joyce Garner"

Now- May 27th

The Center's new exhibit program, Reveal showcases large format two-dimensional works in the Center's hallway by Joyce Garner, of Prospect, KY.

New to the Kentucky Artisan Center, Garner's large format paintings tell stories in a big way. She focuses on people around a table and her work is colorful and whimsical.

Reveal is an exciting new Center program that provides exhibition opportunities for Kentucky artists whose larger two-dimensional works cannot be accommodated within the center's regular retail spaces.

Saturday Tours and Demonstrations

May 6th
-Rachel Savane´, of Lexington, will create jewelry from Kentucky agates and sterling silver from 10:30am to 3:30pm.

A native of Illinois, SavanĂ© studied metals at the University of Illinois and abroad in Denmark. She received a BFA in metals in 1988 and worked two and a half years with the Peace Corps in Guinea, Africa. In 2003, she opened SavanĂ© Silver Gallery in Lexington on West Main Street where she designs and sells a line of jewelry with streamlined settings using Kentucky Agates and semi-precious stones.

May 13th

- Diana Smith Thomas and James Rich of BeSpoken Designs will created colorful patterns in polymer clay, shaping it into jewelry from 10:30am to 3:30pm.

With design and color as his forte, Rich translates his drawings and pen and ink studies into colorful polymer clay. Using a variety of colors, he constructs intricate polymer clay "canes". A "cane" is a rod made up of two or more colors, layered to make a pattern that when cut in a cross-section, reveals a design.

Smith Thomas, a Berea College graduate, takes the constructed polymer clay "cane" designs made by Rich, and creates unique jewelry and wearable art. She takes sliced sections of the polymer clay and folds, cuts and joins them, to create necklace pendants, earrings and pins.

"My designs are built upon my lifelong love and collection of jewelry," said Thomas. "I am intrigued by repeating patterns and multiple part forms."

- The Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea will offer visitors free guided tours through the Center's gallery exhibit, "225: Artists Celebrate Kentucky's History" and the lobby exhibits, "Reveal: Joyce Garner."

These free, guided exhibit tours will be led by Kentucky Artisan Center staff who will talk about the exhibits, the artists and individual works. Staff will answer questions about the techniques and various processes used, and the objects featured. Tours will be given at 11am and again at 2pm.

May 20th

-Three members of the Berea Welcome Center Carvers will demonstrate a variety of woodcarving styles and techniques on Saturday from 10:30am-3:30pm at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea. Members of the Berea Welcome Center Carvers live in many communities in central Kentucky, and their activities include carving classes, carving demonstrations at schools, monthly Kentucky Artisan Center demonstrations and special events.

May 27th

-Sharon Major, of Frog Hollow Creations, will demonstrate the textural metal jewelry techniques of repousse´ and chasing from 10:30am. to 3:30pm.

Repousse´ is a French word for a metalworking technique in which a malleable metal is embellished or shaped by hammering from the reverse side to create a raised design in low relief.

Chasing is the opposite of repousse´ - where the metal is pushed from the front side downwards to define the design with depth. The noun "chase" refers to a groove, furrow, channel or indentation.

Eli Conley in Concert

May 11th
7pm
The Spotlight Playhouse
100 Churchill Ct.

$10 Admission

"That voice! You'll recognize it everywhere. Eli Conley possesses the rare gift of a distinctive vocal timbre that separates him from scores of singer-songwriters in the modern folk ilk." Tom Semioli, Minor 7th

"Eli is the kind of guy who gives more than he receives, who listens more than he talks... and then, when you least expect it, creates beautiful music with meaning and care. Every time I hear Eli play live, I'm struck by not only his musicianship, but the power of his narrative... By the time Eli finishes his last song, those listening will never be the same. And they won't just have learned, and opened, and maybe felt home for the first time. They'll never go back to where they were." Joshua Klipp, Original Plumbing
