Letter from the Artistic Director

Happy New Year!

While we're all barricaded in our homes, waiting for this frigid wave  to pass, we have even more time to reflect upon the past year, and carve  out a new set of resolutions for 2018, and carbo-load for the coming  months. (Not necessarily in that order.)

We've been told that modest and measurable resolutions are best;  not "I'm going to spend less and save more," or "I'm going to drop a ton,"  but "I'm going to bank an extra $20 dollars a month" and I'm going to go  to the gym twice a week."

Almost every week, somebody enthusiastically tells me that they love T he Rep. But when I ask when they last saw a production, the answer is  usually last year, or two years ago, or even longer.

So here's the pitch (you knew it was coming, right?): Come back to T he Rep, just once, although more often would be even better. We're in the  middle of a terrific season, our 85th, and we've expanded our programming.  In addition to our Mainstage productions (the hilarious Ripcord opens on  January 12th), we have classes for both children and adults, and readings, of  both classic plays and new plays by local playwrights, and other coming  attractions. Read this monthly newsletter to stay abreast of what we're up  to...

A biting new comedy from Pulitzer Prize-winning author David Lindsay-Abaire. The sunny room on an upper floor is prime real estate in the Bristol Place Senior Living Facility, so when the cantankerous Abby is forced to share her quarters with new-arrival Marilyn, she has no choice but to get rid of the infuriatingly chipper woman by any means necessary. A seemingly harmless bet between the old women quickly escalates into a dangerous game of one-upmanship that reveals not just the tenacity of these worthy opponents, but also deeper truths that each would rather remain hidden.

Youth Improv Classes

In this family-friendly session, student's will study the fundamentals of improv through games and exercises that help to develop strong ensemble and character work. Students will develop stage presence, self-confidence, communication skills and respect for other performers and their creativity.

Classes are Saturday mornings at the Toledo Rep and start promptly at 9:00 am and finish at Noon.   Please make sure you drop your student off and pick them up on time.

Details about the instructors:

Erin Kanary  is a graduate of The Second City Chicago's Improv and Comedy Writing programs. She has also studied comedy writing in Chicago at iO (formerly Improv Olympic) and long form improv at Planet Ant Theatre in Detroit. Erin was a featured writer/performer at Chicago's Sketchfest 2014 and The Second City's Best of the Box 2014. Erin is currently a house ensemble member at ComedySportz Detroit and performs improv in the back of many poorly-lit bars in Detroit.

Nick Morgan  trained in improv at The Second City Theater in Chicago, IL and iO (formerly Improv Olympic). He graduated the Conservatory program at The Second City, whose notable alumni include Dan Aykroyd, Joan Rivers, John Belushi, Gilda Radner, Bill Murray, John Candy, Eugene Levy, Mike Myers, Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert and Tina Fey. Nick performed improv at The Playground Theater, with longtime house team 'Wing Night' and wrote and performed his original show "Karl Lighter's Hour of Power" at The Second City's Skybox Theater. Nick is a former board member here at The Rep and is fortunate enough to have performed in two productions on the 10th St. stage.

Kelly Fandrey is a theater graduate of Siena Heights University with an expertise in acting and vocal performance. She has also studied at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting Conservatory program in New York, NY. Most recently, Kelly has been a regular Young Rep Ed instructor at The Rep since the spring of 2016.

Classes are held in the Toledo Rep's rehearsal space the "Brown Building", situated across the parking lot from our main theatre at 16 10th Street.

Level 1 - Instructor Erin Kanary

Level 1 introduces students to the principles of improvisation. Learn improv in a pressure-free environment! No prior experience necessary! Through exercises and performance games, students will focus on short-form improvisation ('Whose Line is it Anyway?'). Upon completing Level 1, you will have learned the fundamentals of improv, while gaining the building blocks of long-form improvisation.

Level 2 - Instructor Diana DePasquale

Level 2 says 'yes, and...' to Level 1 and continues to reinforce and build upon the foundations established in Level 1. This class will focus heavily on object work, environment and emotions and introduce the class to the principles of long-form improvisation. The class will learn to string two-person and group scenes together in a montage centered around a single suggestion and theme. 

Diana   DePasquale has trained and performed improv all over New York City at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater, the Magnet Theater, the Peoples Improv Theater in NYC and is a founding member of Foreplay. She hosted Improdome!, a competitive improv show, between 2005 and 2006 and has performed at the Chicago Improv Festival, Del Close Marathon, and in several improvised films, television pilots, and web shorts.  Diana  also appeared in Romancing the "Terrorist: Tajiki Nights" in the 2006 New York International Fringe Festival and is a winner of the Moth Story Slam in Detroit. 


Level 3 - Instructor Nick Morgan

Level 3 continues to reinforce and build upon the foundations established in Level 2. This class will continue to build on scenes, group scenes and long form concepts. It will continue to focus on object work, environment and emotions and working on single suggested themes.

85 years is certainly a long time to be around, but did you know that our two buildings have been around even longer? Our theatre building at 16 10th St was constructed in 1916 and is now over 100 years old!

The Building Committee's mission is to lead and guide the process of maintaining and enhancing The Rep's historic theatre building and rehearsal building. Do you have any interest in helping us with our efforts to preserve and enhance our historic buildings? Whether you have experience in one of the building trades, knowledge about various aspects of construction, or just a passion for this kind of work, we would love to have you on board!

TOLEDO BLADE
  
Toledo theatre has nurtured love of the stage since 1933
     

On April 16, 1933, Fred S. Emmett wrote to six others with a big idea, the creation of a "little theatre". The group got together on April 23, and the Toledo Repertoire Company was born!

By June 8, 1933, the group was presenting its first production, Henrik Ibsen's  A Doll's House, and the company's first full season began September 21 with  The Shelf, a 1926 comedy/drama. In 1935, The Rep moved into its home at 16 10th St., and the show has gone on ever since.

"It's a privilege to be part of a theatre with such a long history, but even more than that, it's an honor to be part of a theatre that is still relevant and enriching so many people's lives in our community today," said Chris McAnall, president of The Rep's board of trustees.

The Rep's goal is to entertain but also to educate. Through its Rep Ed programs, it offers a series of performances, classes, workshops, and summer camps for children and teens in acting, singing, dance, and more. There also are adult classes in acting and improv comedy.

This was one AMAZING year for the Toledo Repertoire Theatre and our #BestNine2017 on Instagram proves it!
We received a Proclamation from the City of Toledo, expanded our Rep Ed program, had a record-breaking run of our teen musical Hairspray, won 17 awards including "Best of Show" at OCTA Jr. Fest, staged premiere productions, introduced thousands of young playgoers to the joys of live theatre, and showcased the work of several local playwrights through our "Toledo Voices" series. We know that we couldn't have done it without the continued support of our devoted volunteers, actors, crew members, parents, families, staff, board members, and patrons!

Our Toledo community helps us succeed and we can't wait for you to see what we have in store for you for 2018!

The Toledo Rep is always looking for new Board and Committee members.  Those wishing to serve should have a vested interest in and a strong allegiance to the Toledo Rep and its continuation as a vital part of the cultural fabric of our Toledo community.  The responsibilities for Board and Committee members are different. Due to bylaw guidelines, we have a limited number of Board seats. However, we have many more Committee positions available. Education is one of the central aspects of our mission here at the Toledo Rep and we are always looking for new instructors to include in our program. If you are interested in being a part of our education program, please let us know! A background in teaching is desired, although not necessarily required. We are looking for people experienced in one or more of the many aspects of theatre, with a passion and desire to share those experiences and skills with others. Our program includes classes, workshops and camps for children, teens and adults.
