MENTAL HEALTH MONTH

MAY IS MENTAL HEALTH MONTH

In 2013, May was designated as  National  Mental Health Month by President  Obama to bring mental health to the forefront. The Hope and Healing Center & Institute seeks to raise awareness and educate the community about mental illness.

Mental health affects 1-in-5 adults and 1-in-10 children every year in the United States; however, it is estimated that half of those affected do not seek treatment. During the month of May, we encourage everyone to learn more about mental health, the symptoms of mental illness and begin a conversation with others about mental health.

The Hope and Healing Center & Institute continues to be an outspoken champion for mental illness by educating the community and increasing access to professional and supportive mental health services in the community.

Throughout the month, check the Hope and Healing Center & Institute's Facebook and Twitter pages where you will find important facts and tips about mental health.

MENTAL HEALTH AFFECTS EVERYONE

Last month in an interview, Prince Harry for the first time addressed his need to seek professional help for his difficulty in processing his mother's death. He openly discussed being on the verge of a complete breakdown and his decision to get help after encouragement from his brother and others close to him.

Prince Harry hopes by speaking out about his own struggles it will encourage others to get help and break the stigma associated with mental health issues.

CENTER & INSTITUTE'S
CHRYSALIS AWARD LUNCHEON

On May 2, Harris County Judge Ed Emmett addressed over 700 attendees at the Hope and Healing Center & Institute's sixth annual award luncheon at the Royal Sonesta Hotel.

Judge Emmett led a panel moderated by Emcee Bill Balleza, KPRC2 News Anchor, which included Pete Earley and Matt Stanford, Chief Executive Officer of the Hope and Healing Center & Institute who discussed the ongoing issues that plague the mental health system and what steps need to be taken so that all who need care are treated.  They all agreed changes in policies and increasing accessibility and affordability while reducing the stigma associated with mental illness are essential in improving the overall mental health system.

This year's keynote speaker, Pete Earley, New York Times bestselling author and 2007 Pulitzer Prize finalist for Crazy: A Father's Search Through America's Mental Health Madness, gave a powerful message as he spoke openly and honestly about the challenges he faced while seeking adequate treatment and care for his son after he was diagnosed with a mental illness.

This year's Chrysalis award was given posthumously to Mr. Howard E. Butt, Jr., former president of The H.E. Butt Family Foundation, Laity Renewal Foundation, Laity Lodge Foundation, and founder of Laity Lodge, who suffered from clinical depression throughout his life.  H is daughter, Deborah Rogers and her husband David M. Rogers, president of The H.E. Butt Family Foundation, accepted the award on Mr. Butt's behalf.

Chrysalis Luncheon Chairs Gwen and Don Hanna would like to thank all supporters and attendees of the 2017 luncheon.
