Meet Our 2018 National Merit Students

We are delighted to announce that Runnels has seven students entering the 2017-2018 National Merit Scholarship Competition. This is a record number in one year for our school! They are juniors Kaylen Howe, Alex Matthews, Sam Matthews, Isabelle McCall, Garrett Miller, Parker Rhinehart and Austin Stansbury.  We'll have to hold our breathes until September when the names of  National Merit Semifinalists and Commended Students will be announced. Congratulations to these outstanding students.

The Raider Citizenship Medal Goes To...

Sophie Edwards

The Raider Citizenship Medal is awarded to a student (one in the junior high and another in high school) who possesses the qualities of kindness, compassion, friendliness, understanding, respect for others and self-respect. The junior high school winner of the Raider Citizenship Medal is 8th grader Sophie Edwards. ( The winner of the high school Raider Citizenship Medal will be announced at the High School Commencement Ceremony.)
 
Raider Scholarship Medals Awarded

The Raider Scholarship Medal recognizes outstanding commitment to academic achievement and excellence. It is presented to one student in each junior and senior high school grade. This year's winners are Jake Haase (grade 7), Garrett Rhinehart (grade 8), Aubri Watts (grade 9), Emma Tooraen (grade 10) and Ashley Stansbury (grade 11).  These students were honored at the Junior and Senior High Award Ceremony held April 27 in the Gladys Hague Runnels Theatre. (The winner for 12th grade will be announced at the High School Commencement Ceremony.) 
Three Cheers for our Raider Spirit Award Winners

One of the most treasured awards available to junior and senior high students at Runnels is the Raider Spirit Medal. It goes to one student in each grade (7th-12th) who demonstrates exceptional school loyalty by actively participating in school activities and demonstrating true commitment to these pursuits. The 2017 Raider Spirit Award winners are Parker Rhinehart (grade 11), Alex Morgan (grade 10), Anna Manning (grade 9), Emma Schlotterer, (grade 8), and Blaiklee Guillot (grade 7). (The 12th-grade winner will be announced at high school graduation.) 
 
Rewarding Scholarship and Service

Special honors were conferred on 11th graders Garrett Miller and Sean Parker at the Junior and Senior High Award Ceremony April 27 in the Gladys Hague Runnels Theatre. Garrett received the 2017 Greater Baton Rouge State Fair Foundation Scholarship Award, and Sean was presented with the Tulane Book Award. 

The Greater Baton Rouge State Fair Foundation Award is a $500 scholarship presented to an outstanding junior in every high school in East Baton Rouge and surrounding parishes. It goes to a student who has participated in volunteer activities at school and in the community. 

The Tulane Book Award program presents up to 100 "Book Awards" (one per high school) to juniors nominated by their high school counselor or principal for outstanding academic achievement and community service. 

Kudos to Course Medalists

From left:  Connor Porthouse, grade 8, was awarded course medals in English 8 Honors, Geometry, Strings, Latin and LA Studies;  Farzeen Wahid, grade 7, won course medals in Junior High Spanish, American History and Life Science Honors; and  Seth Chiasson, grade 10, was awarded course medals in Computer Science and Media Arts II. 

















Course medals are presented each year to junior and senior high students earning the highest grade-point average in each class and subject. This is the highest honor a student can receive in a course. The medal recipients were announced at the Junior and Senior High Award Ceremony held April 27 in the Gladys Hague Runnels Theatre. Congratulations to our grade 7-11 course medal winners! (Course medals going to seniors will be presented at the High School Commencement Ceremony.)

More than 50 percent of the 8th and 12th grade classes at Runnels have qualified for the prestigious President's Education Award Program this year! That translates to 57 percent of the senior class and 52 percent of the 8th grade.

The President's Education Award Program gives individual recognition from the President and the U.S. Secretary of Education to students whose outstanding efforts have enabled them to meet challenging standards of excellence. The award is presented to students exiting junior and senior high school grades (6th, 8th and 12th at Runnels.) 

To earn the award, students must achieve a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.5 and score at the 90th percentile or higher in math, reading, or overall composite on a nationally standardized test. ( Sixth-grade recipients will be announced at the Sixth-Grade Graduation Ceremony on May 24.)  Congratulations to all of our Presidential Scholars!

Making a Grand Entry into National Spanish Exam Arena

Students earning top scores in the National Spanish Exam receive recognition at the Junior and Senior High Award Ceremony in April. 
For the first time ever, Runnels Spanish language students had the opportunity to measure their skills against those of students across the entire country by taking the National Spanish Exam this spring. Based on the number of certificates of achievement presented at the April 27 Junior and Senior High Award Ceremony, our posse did very well!  Congratulations to the 27 students earning podium or honorable mention recognition. 

Level I:   Gold, Grace Scott; Silver, Arianna McNeal and Savannah McNeal; Bronze, Eric Ho and Kaylee Mancuso; Honorable Mention, Fatima Ahmad, Cana Brumfield, Caroline Collins, Hudson Hillman, Thea Knowles, Taylor Koontz, Ryan Ly, Madisan Milam, Janie Schlotterer, Grant Treadaway, Aubri Watts, and Angele Lansing. Saluting Top Achievement on National Latin Exam

Students turning in praiseworthy performances on the National Latin Exam display their certificates of achievement.
The National Latin Exam, sponsored by the American Classical League and the National Junior Classical League, is offered to students taking Latin language classes on seven different levels. Those earning the highest scores among test-takers across the United States and 16 foreign countries are recognized with certificates of achievement. Runnels students attaining top honors in the exam this year were:   Gold Summa Cum Laude, Marshall Pentes and Connor Porthouse (Latin I); Silver Maxima Cum Laude, Matthew Alfonso (Latin I), Anna Somerville and Sam Haase, (Latin II), Parker Rhinehart (Latin III); Magna Cum Laude, Madalyn Burney (Latin I), Anna Kadi (Latin II), Alex Matthews (Latin IV); Cum Laude, James Power and Garrett Rhinehart (Latin I), Alex Morgan (Latin III), and Sam Matthews (Latin IV). 

All Runnels Candidates Pass DELF Exam (Diploma in Advanced French Language) 

All eleven Runnels students who tackled the DELF exam passed and will receive diplomas from the French Ministry of Education.  

Runnels students enrolled in French III and IV had the opportunity to take the French DELF (Diploma in Advanced French Language Studies) exam at school in April. Those who pass the test are issued official diplomas by the French Ministry of Education. Six different diplomas are offered to certify varying levels of proficiency in French. The test, organized by the Alliance Française of New Orleans and Runnels School, evaluated students' French language skills in listening, writing, speaking and reading. To earn the diploma, students must demonstrate proficiency in all four areas.

Junior High Students Earn Duke TIP Recognition

Seventh graders Ashley Belcher and Reagan Kyle have qualified for "state" recognition in the 2017 Duke University Talent Identification Program (TIP). All "state" winners from Louisiana were recognized at a special ceremony held May 1 at Northwestern State University.

Duke TIP's 7th Grade Talent Search identifies students across the nation who have scored at or above the 95th percentile on a grade-level standardized test. As part of the program, these academically talented students take above-level college-entrance exams to learn more about their abilities. 
2017 National Merit Finalists Honored  

Our 2017 National Merit Finalists, seniors (from left) Andrew Mitchell, Henry Forgey and Regan Dean, will be receiving college scholarships. 


Our 2017 National Merit Finalists, Andrew Mitchell, Henry Forgey and Regan Dean, were recognized at the Junior and Senior High Award Ceremony in the Gladys Hague Runnels Theatre on April 27. In addition to receiving special certificates from the National Merit Scholarship Program, all three will be awarded college scholarships next year.
