Open Cities: NY - Paris

In the wake of the volatile situation many refugees face in Europe, and with the Trump Administration's proposed immigration ban and the questioning of US Sanctuary City status, the Institute for Public Architecture is launching the Open City  series. The series will look at the challenges and solutions to supporting and housing vulnerable populations in our city centers, including refugees, emergency shelter populations, and disaster victims.

Co-sponsors: The Irwin S Chanin School of Architecture of The Cooper Union, The Architectural League of New York, AIANY Housing Committee, AIANY Planning & Urban Design Committee.

This event is free and open to the public. RSVP here.

Current Work: Lene Tranberg, Lundgaard & Tranberg Architects
Moderated by Karen Stein

Tranberg is an adjunct professor at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. She has served as visiting professor at The University of Washington, Seattle, and is an honorary member of the American Institute of Architects. Most recently, she was a member of the Jury at the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture - Mies van der Rohe Award 2015. Five of Lundgaard & Tranberg Architect's buildings have been awarded the prestigious RIBA European Award by The Royal Institute of British Architects.

Karen Stein is a writer, editor, architectural consultant, and the executive director of the George Nelson Foundation.

This lecture is co-sponsored with The Architectural League of New York.  Tickets are free for Cooper Union students and faculty with valid ID, and League members.

Current Work: Kengo Kuma

Kengo Kuma strives to create buildings that are sensitive to context. For him, architecture is most successful when it upholds interrelationships inherent in the natural environment. Kuma employs natural materials in designs that merge the regional vernacular with a sublime minimalism often resulting in an effect of dematerialization. "Rather than pursuing one's original style as an architect, you actually visit the place and follow what grows out of it," in Kuma's words.

This lecture is co-sponsored with The Architectural League of New York.

Tickets are free for Cooper Union students and faculty with valid ID, and League members.

WAYS TO GIVE BACK
Sue Fergusson Gussoe Scholarship

Members of The Irwin S. Chanin School or Architecture class of 1995 are leading an effort to raise an endowed scholarship named in honor of Sue Ferguson Gussow A'56, professor emerita, who has taught drawing to generations of students of the school. Our goal is to reach $100k by the end of this fiscal year, which will allow for a scholarship to be awarded to a first-year architecture student every year in perpetuity.

The Cooper Union welcomes Laura Sparks as our new president.  Her stewardship, and our support and work will jointly determine a return to full tuition scholarships of all admitted students. We ask that alumni who were so deeply affected by Sue's teaching join this effort to both honor Sue and move closer to that goal by contributing generously to this fund.  Learn More...
