The Skokie Home Scoop - May 5, 2017

Dear Skokie Families,

If you happened to stop inside The Skokie School today you would have seen an awful lot of 5th and 6th graders cozied up in their finest jammies!  Today was pajama day:  our final theme day during Cancer Awareness Week.  Not only was it a fun, and comfortable way to end the week, but closure on a week that began with the 13th successful hosting of a St. Baldrick's Event at The Skokie School.  Thirty-nine of our students bravely took the stage on Monday to join the Skokie Baldies and Skokie Clippers in a very symbolic haircut after weeks of raising money and awareness around the organizations of St. Baldrick's and Wigs for Kids.  While this event continues to be a Skokie tradition, it is one that goes off with very little advertising, and yet, the generosity and selfless nature of our students always prevails.  This year our students raised over $22,000 dollars (which ends up adding to the over $200,000 that Skokie students have contributed over the last thirteen years!!).  While the fundraising is certainly crucial in contributing to vital research toward curing childhood cancers, the event is not complete without a haircut.  Whether a brave student on stage or an enthusiastic friend, parent, teacher, principal in the audience, all play an important role in that moment when the clippers turn on and the scissors come out.  Many of the teachers and I noticed this year as having the largest parent crowd we have seen in a while (we even had one dad brave the barber's chair alongside his son).  Thank you for your enthusiasm, generosity of heart, compassionate spirits and willingness to give of your time and money.  These are important experiences for our kids to have, and important opportunities for us to reflect on the good health we may enjoy and those that need our support.

Congratulations to our Skokie Chorus, Orchestra and Band, who all braved the stage in their own way this week with two concerts (Tuesday and Thursday).  A great big thank you to Mrs. Kragt, Mrs. Nussbaum, Mrs. Parisoli, Mr. Rzeszutko and Mr. Vowles who continue to keep our music program strong and vibrant!

Enjoy the sunshine this weekend, and the time together with your families.  We look forward to seeing you back on Monday.

Most Sincerely,
Kelly Tess

Tech Corner
This spring students had the opportunity to join the very first Skokie Student Tech Leadership Team.  Students on the Tech Team come to the MakerLab during their RISE period to assist with a variety of tasks.  These tasks include: helping teachers and students with tech support, testing new devices and programs, organizing materials in the MakerLab, troubleshooting issues with programs and equipment, creating tutorials, updating software, working with our 3D printers, Carvey, zSpace, and more!  Take a look at the picture below where some of our members are doing an iPad keyboard inventory to create class sets and make sure all keyboards are working properly.
