National Background Check for 4-H volunteers
MSU Extension updates volunteer files periodically. New to the process is a national background check, performed by backgroundcheck.com. Each volunteer will be asked to complete a national background check online at
https://business2.backgroundchecks.com/invitation/welcome/pVPz
every three years as long as he or she remains a volunteer. The link is secure, and there is no charge to volunteers for these background checks. Volunteers will receive a reminder with instructions from MSU Extension when it is time to do this. During the 2017-18 4-H program year, volunteers with January-April birthdays will be asked to complete an online background check. If you have questions regarding this process or about re-enrolling, contact Seth Martin at (586) 783-8163.

Adults who want to become 4-H volunteers need to complete the 4-H volunteer selection process (VSP). VSP consists of an application, background and reference checks, an interview, and completion of online training modules. Start the process today by submitting the application to

2018 State 4-H Award Applications Process is now open!
Michigan 4-H true leaders ages 11 and older have an opportunity to be recognized for the great work they do in 4-H by completing a state award application. A
Michigan 4-H State Award
is the highest honor bestowed on a Michigan 4-H member and provides an opportunity to receive recognition for their engagement in rich learning experiences that result in outstanding knowledge and life-skill development.
State award applications are divided into four categories: Mark of Excellence essay contest (11-12 years old), junior state award (13-15 years old), senior state award (16-19 years old) and group awards (13-19 years old). The application process and selection is determined by the age of the 4-H member. Final candidates for the junior, senior and group level awards in each project area will be selected to participate in the State Awards program during 4-H Exploration Days in June where final selection and announcement of winners will take place.
The application can be found at http://bit.ly/2xWk3VO and is due Feb. 1, 2018. For more information, contact Betty Jo Krosnicki at [email protected].
NEW: Virtual learning space opened for State 4-H Award applicants
MSU Extension has launched a new online space for 4-H State Award applicants to meet and receive help and feedback on their applications as they work through the process of compiling their applications over the next month. MSU Extension is using MSU's virtual classroom software, Desire2Learn (D2L). All potential State 4-H Award applicants are welcome to join this online community. It is not a requirement to join in order to submit an application, however, it is a helpful tool that provides feedback and answers questions prior to final submission. The D2L classroom will also be an opportunity for 4-H members to experience an online classroom, much like they may experience as a future college student.
The 4-H State Awards classroom is divided by section within the application; with a space for applicants to share drafts of their work and receive feedback as they progress from peers, volunteers, or staff. The goal is to help each applicant submit a stronger application for their final draft. Classroom participants will be able to post their own work, view others' submissions, and post feedback through classroom discussion boards.
4-H members wishing to engage in the D2L virtual space will need to request permission to be added to the classroom.
- Send an email to [email protected] with your first and last name, email address, and role (4-H member, staff, volunteer).
- MSU Extension will create an MSU community ID for each person (or use your current msu.edu email address). Your community ID will be emailed to you at the email address provided.
- MSU Extension will add you to the D2L classroom using your community ID. Once added, MSU Extension will let you know that you have been added.
- You will login to the classroom at: https://d2l.msu.edu/d2l/loginh/. The class will appear on your list under "communities"
- Once in the classroom you can navigate using the content browser, starting with "Introductions"
MSU Extension also needs volunteers who are willing to help review submissions and provide feedback. This would be a great virtual volunteer role if you are someone who enjoys volunteering from home. Follow the steps above to be added to the classroom. Questions? Contact Extension Educator Betty Jo Krosnicki at 810-648-2515 ext. 309 or
[email protected].

4-H Capitol Experience is a 4-day program, taking place April 15-18 in Lansing, Michigan. High-school aged youth come to the state's capitol to learn about state government through visits with legislators and other policy influencers. During the event, youth select a public policy issue area that they are interested in and work with a team of other youth to develop a mock legislative bill related to their issue of choice. While observing and learning about the real state government processes, youth mirror that by putting their bills through their own legislative simulation. The four-day event includes tours of the Michigan State Capitol, meeting with their state legislators, and time to find and strengthen their own voice in the legislative process. The cost of the program includes lodging and most meals and is $350 for 4-H members, $370 for non 4-H members. Registration is available online at
https://events.anr.msu.edu/4HCapEx/ until March 16.
JOANN Fabrics & Crafts partners with 4-H
JOANN Fabrics and 4-H have formed a new partnership to bring more hands-on 4-H programs to youth in local communities across the nation. Through this partnership, they hope to
empower more kids through experiences where they can grow valuable life skills and learn by doing, creating and making.
As part of the partnership, JOANN's is providing a free rewards card to members of the 4-H community, including youth, parents, alumni, volunteers and supporters. Reward card holders receive 15 percent off the total cost of eligible in-store and online purchases; 2.5 percent of all rewards card purchases will be donated back to 4-H. To sign-up for your free rewards card, visit http://www.joann.com/4-h/ or download the JOANN's app on your mobile device.
The popular craft store is also supporting 4-H through a 4-H Paper Clover campaign that will take place during the month of February. Visit your local JOANN's store during this time to purchase either a $1 or $4 Paper Clover. One-hundred percent of the proceeds raised during the Paper Clover campaign will support 4-H with 70 percent of funds generated in Michigan being donated to the state 4-H program.
As the partnership grows, JOANN's and 4-H hope to provide additional opportunities to the 4-H community. Look for additional details in the future about an in-store volunteer project on Feb. 3, and an online fashion review!
