Roxbury Schools Communication Effectiveness Survey
Roxbury Township Public Schools is striving to become a certified NJ Sustainable School as outlined in our district goals for this year.
Sustainable Jersey for Schools
is a certification program for New Jersey public schools that want to go green, conserve resources and take steps to create a brighter future, one school at a time.
As part of the certification process, the district needs to evaluate the effectiveness of its communication strategies. That's where you come in!
We are interested in learning more about your thoughts, feelings, and attitudes towards how Roxbury Township Public Schools communicates with you!

Board of Education to Honor Teachers of the Year Monday Night
 Roxbury Township Public Schools, a K-12 district preparing the children of today for tomorrow, will recognize its 2016/2017 Teachers of the Year at the Monday, May 8th Board of Education meeting at 7:30 p.m. in the Lincoln/Roosevelt School Auditorium at 34 North Hillside Avenue in Succasunna.
Community members, parents, students, and staff are invited to join the Board in their recognition of these individuals.
Roxbury Schools Becomes a Google Reference District
 The Roxbury Township Public Schools was recently added to Google for Education's Reference Districts. Google for Education Reference Districts are districts that demonstrate excellence and thought leadership through the innovative use of technology, including G Suite for Education (formerly known as Google Apps for Education) and Chromebooks, to drive impact and positive learning outcomes.
Roxbury was identified and acknowledged by Google as being a district that demonstrates vision and thought leadership through the strong adoption of Google Apps for Education technology to drive positive learning outcomes and a district willing and excited to share their experiences, learning, and best practices with others.

EMS Prepares for 2nd Annual Student Unity Tour
 The Eisenhower Middle School's Character Education Committee is running its second annual EMS Student Unity Tour on Wednesday, May 24th (Rain Date: Thursday, May 25th) at noon at Horseshoe Lake Park to raise money for the National Police Unity Tour.
"The EMS Student Unity Tour began last year and raised funds for the National Police Unity Tour. As a school, we proudly donated $2,500 to the Memorial of police officers who have fallen in the line of duty," shared Heather Roddy, EMS Physical Education teacher and event coordinator.
Student riders will have the option to ride one lap (1.75 miles) or two laps (3.5 miles) around Horseshoe Lake Park to honor Police Officers that have fallen in the line of duty. The students will be riding alongside local police officers.
All EMS students are invited to participate in this Police Unity Tour as riders or as supporters of their peers. Each rider or student spectator must raise at least $25 in donations in order to participate.

TJ Mathis, EMS 8th Grader, Honored at Morris County's MSLA Dinner
 Roxbury Township Public Schools is proud to announce that one of its students, Thomas J. (TJ) Mathis, an eighth grader at Eisenhower Middle School, received the Morris County Superintendent's Middle School Leadership Award (MSLA) by the Morris County Association of School Administrators (MCASA) on Tuesday night at the Hanover Marriott in Whippany.
This award is for graduating middle school students whose actions and deeds "represent a model of citizenship and leadership in their respective school community".

EMS Receives $1,000 Award for Physical Education
 Joe Gangemi, Health and Physical Education teacher at Eisenhower Middle School was recently awarded $1,000 on behalf of California Casualty to be used for the Eisenhower Middle School Physical Education program.
California Casualty has partnered with education associations for more than 65 years. According to their website, "We understand the growing financial strain on our public schools, and we want to help our friends in the education community."
The California Casualty Thomas R. Brown Athletics Grant was established to provide support to public middle and high schools sports programs negatively impacted by reduced budgets.

Mini-JAM at Nixon to Raise Funds to Support Children's Cancer Treatments
 Nixon Elementary School in Landing, New Jersey has brought back the JAM!
Two years ago, the school ran Nixon's JAM and it was a huge success. It is now back and is bigger and better than ever!
"JAM stands for JUST A MINUTE because here at Nixon we believe it only takes one minute to make a difference to be the best that you can be," explained the Nixon Culture and Climate JAM Committee.
Students and staff, led by the Nixon Culture and Climate Committee (CCC), came together on Friday to sing and dance to their theme song appropriately named, "It Only Takes a Minute."
For this year's JAM, Nixon is partnering with students and staff from Roxbury High School's Mini-Thon Committee to raise money for the Hershey Children's Hospital to support cancer treatments for children.

Roxbury High School Awarded Sustainability Grant
 Roxbury High School was awarded a $2,000 Sustainable Jersey for Schools capacity-building grant funded by the PSEG Foundation. Four $10,000 grants and thirty $2,000 grants were distributed to fund a variety of projects including an outdoor science lab, sustainability curriculum, school wellness programs, hydroponic and aeroponic gardens, green walls, wind and solar energy charging stations, recycling and more.
Denise Glenn, RHS Science Supervisor for grades 6-12 submitted a grant proposal on Seeds of Sustainability: School Garden. The plan is for the high school to purchase aeroponic tower gardens to grow herbs, fruits, and vegetables for students and faculty that will be maintained by students in service learning programs and the environmental club. The garden will be used to teach various lessons, including science, sustainability, and healthy eating.

Roxbury High School Honors Latest Groups of 'Students of the Month'
 Roxbury High School, located in Succasunna, has honored its students of the month for January, February, and March.
The student recognition program at Roxbury High School is designed to identify model students. Recognizing student achievement helps to create a more positive school climate and culture. Each month, from October through May, a student will be recognized as "Student of the Month" in one of 11 subject areas, for capturing what it means to be a model student, reinforcing the ideals of hard work, determination, perseverance, and persistence.

Roxbury High School Lists Third Marking Period Honor Roll
 Roxbury High School, located in Succasunna, has listed its honor roll students for the third marking period of the 2016-17 school year.
To qualify for High Honor Roll, all grades are 90 and above. To qualify for Honor Roll, all grades are 80 and above.

Roxbury Hosts the 'Festival of the Arts' on May 17th
 Roxbury High School invites the community to its annual Festival of the Arts on Wednesday, May 17th from 6-8 p.m. at Roxbury High School. The Performing Arts department will feature Dance and Broadway Theatre and a concert by the Eisenhower Middle School students, refreshments will be made and served by the Family and Consumer Science classes, and the Industrial Arts department will display woodworking, computer arts and drafting, CAD and 3-D design. Admission is free to all.
Lala Abaddon is this year's theme and will personally be at the Festival of the Arts. She has been working with the Photography II classes on a weaving project similar to the work she makes. She is also working with the rest of the art department students in preparation for the Festival to make an installation.

Instrument Test Drive Invitation for Roxbury 4th Graders and their Families
 The Roxbury High School Instrumental Music department will be holding a Roxbury Instrument Test Drive for all 4th grade students.
This event is designed as an "open house" style - come and visit any time that is convenient for you and your family between 4-7 p.m. in the Roxbury High School cafeteria on Wednesday, May 24th.
Our goal at the Instrument Test Drive is to expose your child to the instruments that are available next year and your child will have the opportunity to play each one.
Students will also meet our district instrumental music teachers along with several Roxbury band and orchestra students.
If you and your child cannot attend the Instrument Test Drive, information regarding signups and instrument requests will be communicated through your child's general music teacher. Please feel free to contact us with any questions.

Roxbury Baseball Updates:
Roxbury Baseball Beats Jefferson in Blowout
 In a blowout game that allowed its coach to use a number of players who normally get limited playing time, the Roxbury High School baseball team on Friday trounced Jefferson 16-5.
The tone was set early as the Gaels racked up eight runs in the first inning while Jefferson scored none. That wouldn't happen for the remainder of the contest. In fact, Jefferson scored two runs in the second inning while keeping Roxbury off the scoreboard.
But after scoring two in the second and three in the third, Jefferson's bats went cold. The Falcons scored no runs after the third while Roxbury scored two in the fifth and two in the sixth.
The win puts Roxbury's record at 10-4.

Roxbury Baseball Bumped from County Tournament
In an upset, the 5th seeded Roxbury High School baseball team got knocked out of the Morris County Tournament in the first round on Saturday as it fell to 12th seed Morris Hills.
During the game, which Morris Hills won 3-2, neither team scored until the fourth inning, when the Scarlet Knights put two runs on the scoreboard. Morris Hills added its third run in the next inning, when the Gaels came through with the first of their two runs.
Roxbury's second run came in the sixth but neither team scored in the last inning, leaving the Scarlet Knights to move on in the tournament. Last year, the Gaels made it to the tournament semifinal, where they lost to Randolph.
During Saturday's game, Roxbury's Andy Axelson hit two doubles. Roxbury is now 10-5.

Roxbury (1) at Delbarton (4) - Baseball - May 2nd
George Parsells scattered six hits while striking out six and walking one over six innings to help Delbarton defeat Roxbury, 4-1, in Morris Township.
Billy Price tossed a scoreless seventh inning to earn the save. Price also doubled and drove in a run on a fielder's choice. Anthony Volpe (2-for-4) and Andrew Papantonis picked up an RBI apiece as well.
Will Findlay's RBI double gave Roxbury a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Delbarton stormed back with one in the third, two in the fourth and another in the fifth to seal the win. Click here to read this coverage in NJ.com.
Montville (11) at Roxbury (5) - Baseball - May 3rd
Marc Tsukroff and Joe DelloStritto each hit a home run to lead Montville to an 11-5 victory over Roxbury in Succasunna.
Tsukroff went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored and DellosStritto added three hits with an RBI and three runs scored for Montville.
Erik Katterman had a bases-clearing double in the sixth inning to give Montville a 7-3 lead.

Roxbury (2) at Hanover Park (6) - Softball - April 27th
Amy Petrovich went 3-for-3 with one run scored and three RBI for fifth-seeded Hanover Park in its 6-2 win over 12th-seeded Roxbury in the first round of the Morris County Tournament.
Amanda Bermel, Nikkiann Giaimo and Maddie McLaughlin all drove in one RBI each for Hanover Park.

Roxbury (6) at Whippany Park (3) - Softball - May 1st
Kayla Corrente allowed three runs on six hits and struck out seven batters over seven innings of work for Roxbury in its 6-3 win over Whippany Park.

Columbia (0) at Roxbury (11) - Softball - May 2nd
Hailey Womer led Roxbury with three hits, a home run and four RBI in a 11-0 triumph over Columbia in Succasunna.
Natalie Decena tallied two hits with a double and three runs scored for Roxbury. Vanessa Dash went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Emily Song hit a double with three runs scored. Song pitched a shutout, allowing two hits with six strikeouts and zero walks.

Madison Amdur and Vanessa Dash each drove in two runs for Roxbury as it beat Montville, 9-6, in Montville.
Emily Song went 2-for-4 with a double and three runs, while Dash doubled.
Kayla Corrente went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run. She also pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing six runs (all unearned) on nine hits, striking out six and walking four.

Roxbury Boys Lacrosse Updates:
Roxbury Boys Lacrosse Takes Home Gael/ Rams Cup
 The Roxbury High School boys lacrosse team easily beat Randolph on Thursday, winning the Gael/Ram Cup for the third consecutive year and giving its coach his 50th win.
The 16-7 victory made coach Chris Blough the winningest coach in Roxbury boys lacrosse history and it put Roxbury in first place on top the NJILL Rizk League as the only undefeated team in the league.
The Gaels, now 10-1, next play Sparta on Saturday.

Roxbury (15) at Sparta (13) - Boys Lacrosse - April 29th
After trailing 6-1 in the second quarter, Roxbury, No. 20 in the NJ.com Top 20, came away from an offensive shootout with a 15-13 win over Sparta in Sparta thanks to six goals from Paul Shadel.
Matt Dansecs added four goals and dished out three assists, while Eric D'Arminio scored twice.
Dave Biank scored a goal and tallied five assists and recorded his 200th career point, while Anthony Perhacs and Ben Palanchi each scored once.

Roxbury Boys Lacrosse Prepares for County Tourney Round Two
As the Roxbury High School boys lacrosse team gears up for the second round of Morris County Tournament competition on Tuesday, its players can look to Saturday for inspiration.
In a game that looked very bleak for the Gaels that morning, Roxbury came back to beat Sparta, a team it hasn't managed to overcome in many years.

It's Second Round of County Tournament for Roxbury Boys Lacrosse
 Bolstered by a strong second period - and nearly waylaid by questionable officiating - the Roxbury High School boys Lacrosse team on Monday advanced in the Morris County Tournament by beating Montville 14-10.
It was a game that saw Matt Dancsecs reach the 100 goal milestone.
Roxbury, now 12-1, takes on Madison at home on Thursday in the second round of the Morris County Tournament.

Montville (10) at Roxbury (14), Morris County Tournament, First Round - Boys Lacrosse - May 2nd
Dave Blank picked up four goals and two assists while Matt Dancsecs added three goals and two assists to lead fourth-seeded Roxbury to a 14-10 win over 13th-seeded Montville in the first round of the Morris County Tournament in Roxbury.
Roxbury will take on fifth-seeded Madison in the semifinals at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
Anthony Perhacs had a goal and three assists in the win and both Zach Poissant and Paul Shadel chipped in two goals. Roxbury was able to build a six-goal lead going into halftime thanks to a 5-0 second quarter.
Jason Archer led Montville with three goals and two assists. Matt Hingle, Sean Enright and Matt Burke each found the back of the net twice.

History on the Lacrosse Field: Roxbury Heads to County Semifinals
 Thanks to an overtime win against Madison on Thursday, the Roxbury High School boys lacrosse team is going where none of its predecessors has ventured: To the semifinals in the Morris County Tournament.
The 9-8 victory came on a dramatic goal by senior Eric D'Arminio, ending a contest where Roxbury was, at one point, trailing 8-6.
The game had all the makings of a short novel: The ups and downs, the disappointments and excitement, only to end in total jubilation for Roxbury and its fans. The 19th-ranked Gaels lost only one game all season and won the other 13. Their next county tournament foe: No 1-seeded Delbarton in a Saturday battle at Montville.

Roxbury (7) at Kinnelon (4) - Girls Lacrosse - April 27th
Emily Koepfler tallied three goals and Emma Karnitsky added two goals with two assists to lead Roxbury to a 7-4 victory over Kinnelon in Kinnelon.
Melissa Murphy and Kendall Torpin each scored one goal apiece and Natalie Shulkowski had nine saves in the win.

Roxbury Girls Lacrosse Advances in County Tournament
 Emily Koepfler scored five goals and one assist Saturday as the Roxbury High School girls lacrosse team beat Madison at home to advance to the Morris County Tournament quarterfinals.
In the 9-7 victory, Roxbury's Emma Karnitsky made three goals and Hanna Bhend had one.
Roxbury goaltender Natalie Shulkowski made eight saves.
The Gaels went into the second half with a 6-3 lead. The Dodgers came back to outscore Roxbury in the second half, finding the goal four times while Roxbury added three.

Roxbury (3) at Chatham (15), Morris County Tournament, Quarterfinal Round - Girls Lacrosse - May 2nd
Emilie DeKeyzer scored seven goals to lead second-seeded Chatham, No. 10 in the NJ.com Top 20, to a 15-3 win over seventh-seeded Roxbury in the quarterfinal round of the Morris County Tournament in Chatham.
Zoe Kraus had three goals and two assists and Schuyler Bixby added five assists for Chatham. Frances Workman added two goals in the win.
Emily Koepfler, Kendall Torpin, and Tara Roumes each scored for Roxbury.

North Warren (1) at Roxbury (13) - Girls Lacrosse - May 3rd
Elizabeth Poissant and Anna Cook both scored twice to lead Roxbury to a 13-1 win over North Warren in Succasunna.
Poissant, Kennidy Rauchbach, Erin Miller and Cassidy Miller all scored their first career goals. In all, 11 different players found the back of the net in the win. Roxbury led 6-0 at halftime and cruised from there.

Come support Roxbury HS Ice Hockey at their annual document shred event on Saturday, May 13th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Horseshoe Lake. Bring your secure documents that you need shredded and donate to the team. This event is sponsored by the Roxbury High School Ice Hockey Booster Association.
RHS Boys Soccer Meet & Greet - May 15, 2017
 The Roxbury High School Boys Soccer Association Inc. invites upcoming current 8th graders to our soccer program. We are having a Meet and Greet Meeting for all upcoming freshmen and new players on Monday, May 15, 2017 @ 7PM in the Roxbury High School Cafeteria.
At this meeting, you will meet with the varsity coach and board members. This is a very informative meeting which will go over details about what the coaches expect from the players and any additional programs that are offered on the off-season. The board will go over membership and fundraising that is expected for the upcoming season. Also, the boys will have the opportunity to meet upperclassmen and ask them questions about their experience on the team.

Roxbury Township Public Schools are continuously collecting "Box Tops for Education" at our K-8 schools.
This is an easy, practically effortless way to raise funds for our schools by purchasing items you buy all the time.
Clipped box tops can be sent to any of our K-8 schools district-wide. School addresses can be found on our website at www.roxbury.org.

 The Roxbury Alumni Association is looking to expand its current board of directors. They are looking for energetic alum interested in getting involved with Alumni Association and to add new members to its board. The Roxbury Alumni Association was established in the early 1900s and formally incorporated in 1968. Every year the Alumni Association provides a scholarship to a graduating senior. The association also purchases a Echo yearbook and donates it to the Roxbury Township Library for its archive.
Membership is only $10 and with your gift, you directly support the ability for the Alumni Association to continue giving a RHS grad a scholarship. You are also supporting the association as it develops new programs and events for you to enjoy.

Buy a Native Plant, Help Restore an Old Roxbury Train Station
 There are many well-known benefits to decorating your property with plants native to the region. Here's a new one: Native plants can help restore an old train station in Landing.
As a fundraiser for its ongoing restoration of the former Lackawanna station, the Lake Hopatcong Foundation is having a native plant sale on May 6, said foundation chairman Marty Kane. The sale takes place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the station, which is at 125 Landing Road.
Kane said more than 25 varieties of native plants will be available. These include aster, black-eyed Susan, coneflower, bluebell and "harder to find items like witch hazel and New Jersey tea," said Kane, who is a historian.

Lake Hopatcong Block Party Just Around Corner
 The Lake Hopatcong Foundation Block Party is just five weeks away. This must-attend event celebrates New Jersey's largest lake: From recreation and leisure to business and everyday living.
The fourth-annual event, to be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 13, rain or shine, at Hopatcong State Park, will bring together businesses, community groups, craft vendors, food trucks and local restaurants.
There will be a children's area, demonstrations, bands and opportunities to have a short boat ride provided by Bridge Marina and Lake Hopatcong Cruises. Limited parking is available at the Hopatcong State Park with a suggested donation of $6. Free, offsite parking is located in nearby lots with free shuttle services to and from the park.
Each zone of the Block Party will host many vendors where attendees can browse unique gift items (just in time for Mother's Day) as well as food, services, products and learn about the missions of non-profit organizations.

Grants Available for Recreation Trails through Morris County Freeholders
Letters of intent from interested towns are due by 4 p.m. Thursday, June 1 and formal applications are due by 4 p.m. Friday, June 30. Grant awards will be announced in the late fall. Workshops to review the program and educate applicants are set for Tuesday, April 25 and Thursday, May 18.
Grants are awarded annually to qualified applicants from the county's 39 towns to build new recreational trails on municipal open space, thereby enhancing recreational opportunities for all Morris County residents.
The Board of Freeholders in 2016 approved awards of $661,000 for 13 trails projects in 13 municipalities.

Volunteers Needed for Annual Roxbury Community Benefit 5K Race
The Roxbury Project Graduation Committee is looking for Volunteers! High school kids welcomed also for volunteer Hours. Volunteers are get a free shirt.
The Morris County Striders Running Club is hosting their annual Roxbury Community Benefit 5K race (formerly the Merry Heart 5K) on Monday, June 12. Project Graduation receives a donation from the race for providing marshals along the race course. The job of the marshal is to keep the runners on course, to prevent neighborhood traffic during the race and to cheer the runners on!
The race starts at 7:00. Volunteers are asked to be at their location by 6:45. Volunteers will be at their location for 30 minutes to an hour.
Girls on the Run - Registration is now open!
Girls on the Run is a transformational physical activity based positive youth development program for girls in 3rd-8th grade. We teach life skills through dynamic interactive lessons and running games. The program culminates with the girls being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5k running event. Girls meet twice a week for an hour and fifteen minutes over the course of ten weeks during our spring and fall season.

Roxbury continues to deliver innovative customer service with their new self-serve on-line portal called 24/7 Rox. Now you can keep up-to-date with all the exciting news in Roxbury Township. On any day at any time, you can query property information, search and track your permit, schedule a building inspection, receive status updates, file a service request, or research any property in town. You are no longer limited to access town hall during regular business hours; Roxbury Township is open 24/7!
In addition to 24/7 Rox, we also offer another way to access our Township with our full-featured, mobile app, Connected Roxbury NJ. The app is free and available in the app store for IOS and Androids. All the information on our website is now in your hands and goes where you go. There are quick links to the Roxbury Newsletter, Online Payments, Notification Sign-Up, Agendas, Calendar and more; all at your fingertips. 11th Annual Taste of Roxbury
 The Roxbury Area Chamber of Commerce will host the 11th annual
Taste of Roxbury culinary event from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, May 22, 2017 at the Roxbury High School.
This annual fundraising event will benefit community charities. Attendees will sample food-as much as they'd like-prepared by local restaurants.
This great evening of eating and socializing will feature great food, door prizes, music and a more!
Tickets are $25 and must be purchased in advance and are available at the Roxbury Recreation Dept. (Succasunna), Fulton Bank (Succasunna), and online at

Roxbury Applied Music Program
Mid-Year Registration for Grades 5-12
 Roxbury's Applied Music Program is one of the most celebrated after school programs in the region. Blessed with award-winning music educators offering world-class instruction, the program nurtures local talent, empowering students to pursue careers in entertainment well after graduation.
This is a district-wide program that provides a high-quality enhancement to classroom instruction. Teachers are all specialists on their instrument or vocal specialty. All of our teachers are trained professional musicians and highly qualified in their instrument of expertise. Private study is extremely valuable to the individual student and highly encouraged. Private study is offered as enrichment, NOT remedial instruction. It is encouraged for the complete development of each students' potential as a performing musician and/or artist.
We are beginning mid-year registrations for those students interested in taking private lesson. Once the form and registration fee are received, your child will be assigned a weekly lesson time.

RHS Financial Literacy this Summer
The New Jersey Department of Education has mandated that all students are required to complete a course (2.5 credits) in Financial Literacy to be eligible for graduation. Due to the number of students requesting to take this course, we have decided to offer the class as an online summer course (we will continue to offer the traditional Financial Literacy course at Roxbury High School as well).
The course will be available to Roxbury High School rising juniors and seniors only during the summer of 2017. The course will begin on Wednesday, July 5, 2017 and run for approximately seven weeks. This interactive course will include writing assignments, labs, quizzes, and tests.
The final exam must be taken in person at Roxbury High School during the week of August 14, 2017. If the student does not fulfill all of the requirements for this class, no credit will be given and the appropriate grade will be listed on the student's transcript.
