Dan Kreiss has been in Christian ministry for more than 30 years and served in a variety of youth ministry positions both in New Zealand and the United States, including in Youth for Christ and as church youth pastor, boys' home supervisor, and school chaplain. He has also coached a multitude of sports in an effort to connect with young people on their terms. He is currently the Dean of the Peeke School of Christian Mission and directs the Youth Ministry degree program at King University. He recently completed his Master of Divinity at Emmanuel Seminary and has been approved by the Holston Presbytery as "certified to receive a call." He has also just begun a doctoral program through Portland Seminary. He enjoys helping people of all ages find out how God is already active in their lives. He has been married to Cindy for more than 25 years, and together they have four children ranging in age from 14 to 25.

Our first fellowship night of the new semester is scheduled for next Wednesday, January 10. Katie Vande Brake will speak. At 5:30 p.m. we will share a fellowship dinner of spaghetti, salad, bread, and dessert in the Fellowship Hall. The Adult Learning segment will follow at 6:15, and the Middle School Gathering and Wednesday Night Kids will meet separately at 6:00. High School Small Groups will meet at 7:00. Please join us!

Happy New Year! Beginning next Wednesday morning, January 10, Lorri Looney's Heart to Heart DVD Bible Study will begin an eight-week study of Kelly Minter's No Other Gods. Workbooks will be available at the first session. All women of the church are welcome to attend and bring a friend. This group meets from 9:30 to 11:30 in the Coffee Klatch Room.

Holston Summer Camp seeks motivated, energetic, Christian counselors for summer camp staff positions. Resident staff must be at least 18 years old with a high school diploma and one year of higher education or work experience. Counselors will be expected to participate in vigorous physical activity. Holston Summer Camp prefers previous youth camp or counselor experience. Background checks and references will be required. Applicants must love to work with kids. Positions include Internship Summer Director, Adventure Leaders, Resident Counselors, Swim Instructor/Lifeguard, Day Camp Director, Day Camp Counselors, and Nurse. Applications are available here.

Sunday's music: Sunday's offertory anthem, "Gesù Bambino," is a familiar work composed in 1917 by Pietro A. Yon (1886¬1943). Yon made his living largely as an organist and teacher, but he is remembered today for his sacred music for the Roman

Catholic Church. Although born in Italy, he settled in New York in 1907 and is among the most important American composers of sacred music for the Catholic Church in the first half of the twentieth century. Yon accepted the coveted post of organist at St. Patrick's Cathedral in 1927 and held the position up to his death. He also served as choir director for much of his time there. Yon's organ music, much of it religious in nature, has also endured through the years. Overall, his output was substantial and included 21 masses, many motets, and various other sacred works, solo organ and piano pieces, songs, and chamber and orchestral compositions, including several concertos. Yon was among the most important organ teachers in the New York area during his lifetime. Music historian Salvatore Basile notes, "The song ("Gesù Bambino") would achieve the near-impossible feat of surviving in the standard holiday repertoire, with important performances, innumerable recordings, and every kind of vocal and instrumental arrangement."

Organist's footnotes: The medieval plainchant, "Divinum Mysterium," is the tune to which an even more ancient Latin poem, "Corde natus" ("Of the Father's Heart Begotten," alternatively known as "Of the Father's Love Begotten"), was paired as early as the tenth century. This early Christmas carol, our prelude this Sunday, first appeared in print in 1582 in the Finnish song book Piae Cantiones. David Blackwell (b. 1961), coeditor of the multivolume series Oxford Hymn Settings for Organists, has given us a fresh setting of this well-known tune.

Sunday's postlude, the chorale prelude "Christ unser Herr zum Jordan kam" (BWV 684) by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), has a trio sonata like ritornello in C minor in the three parts of the manuals with the cantus firmus in the tenor register of the pedal in the Dorian mode of C. Bach specifically stipulates two keyboards to give different sonorities to the imitative upper parts and the bass part. The undulating sixteenth notes in the bass, usually interpreted as representing the flowing waters of the Jordan, imitate a violin continuo.
