Adel Lions 100
Centennial Celebration of Lions International

This month we spoke with members of the Adel Lions Club, a fun civic organization celebrating 100 years of International service.

The Adel Lions Club empowers volunteers to serve our community, meet humanitarian needs, and encourages peace and understanding.

"We believe everyone deserves a healthy life. Adel Lions volunteers are always working to improve the health of children and adults through health programs that focus on hearing, diabetes and much more." Brett Glenn, President

Adel Lions

Pat Rohret has been a member of the Adel Lions Club for 30 years.
"A recent figure at our Lions Club one night was Greg DuFoe, the ADM Superintendent. He started his discussion about the status of the ADM school district by saying, 'You don't have to be in Adel very long before you notice that the Adel Lions Club has its fingerprints all over this town', and I think he's right."

"One of our major projects is Kids Sight. Iowa state law requires that all student have a vision screening before starting kindergarten. Our Lions Club purchased a special digital screening camera for $10,000 to take pictures of children's eyes. These pictures are sent via the internet a specialist at The University of Iowa hospital. Any problems are reported back to the parents for further evaluation. All of this is offered to students at no cost to them or their parents. In the last three years alone, the Adel Lions Club have checked the vision of 989 students in Adel, De Soto, Van Meter, Waukee, Granger, and Dallas Center. We are proud to prove these services to our community and live up to the motto, 'We Serve'."

"We also work to empower our next generation through the support of the Boys Scouts and the Girl Scouts. We support our students by sponsoring students in Boys State and Girls State, donating to the scholarship foundation, fine arts programs, and ADM athletic boosters programs."

"We respect the proud work of our Boy Scouts and help plant flags throughout our community 5 times a year. Thanks to the support of the Adel community, we now raise more than 800 flags each of these 5 days. What a wonderful sight that is."
Pat Rohret, Adel Lion, 30 years of Service

Adel Lions
Dusty Weeks Rich Hughes Brett Glenn

Adel Lions volunteers are also stewards of the Earth, protecting the planet with a highway clean-up project that helped raise funds for the ADM After Prom program, and by collecting bottles and cans for redemption. Located on the East Side of the downtown square, this central location keeps cans and bottles out of the environment. Last year, more than 200,000 cans were donated, raising more than $10,000.

This year alone, the Adel Lions Club has donated $35,000 to community organizations and projects.

Dusty Weeks, past President and "Lion Tamer", enjoys meeting with his fellow Lions for civic duty and fun.

"I was 25 when I joined, which is young for a service organization. I grew up around it; it always seemed like a fun way to give back. There is a lot of good that is done, but everything is done in a lighthearted way. Its a nice group to be part of."

The Adel Lions meet the first and third Wednesday each month at the Adel City Park or Legion Hall, depending on weather. Volunteers seeking to serve and have fun doing it, are encouraged to attend the meetings, reach out via the Club's Facebook page, or spot a member wearing their blue Adel Lions teeshirt and say hello.

"If you're new to town, the Adel Lions is a great way to learn about the community. We welcome everyone with an eye towards being civic minded and working to better their community. Ideally they are someone who likes to have fun, too."

Recipes From Home
Recipe From Home - Buffalo Chicken Celery Boats

Every family has their own flavor. Some families live and die by good oil, garlic, and basil. Others need 5 kinds of peppers and 10 kinds of hot sauce. When families combine, there can be quite the difference of opinion about the right way to make a dish.  But even more challenging, is when you find your tastes are simply worlds apart.

My daughter has always been good at figuring out what people like. She talks to picky eaters about their preferences; the ins and outs of why they like or dislike certain foods. Her efforts have converted many a carnivore into occasional leafy green herbivores. She, in turn, likes to try other's peoples cooking. Especially when Picky Eaters cook.

Which brings us to the recipe: Buffalo Chicken Celery Boats. My daughter isn't a fan of hot wings, or blue cheese. When one of the converted carnivores pointed this out and made the shrewd observation that she had never really given them a chance, she gave them a try. Now, this is one of her favorite recipes for potlucks or bagged lunches. So this 4th of July share a tray of boneless hot wing delight!

Buffalo Chicken Celery Boats:
Ingredients:
1/3 C. Frank's Hot Sauce
2 T. Mayonnaise
Salt & Pepper to Taste
2 C. Rotisserie Chicken, Chilled and Shredded
4 stalks Celery, cut into 3" pieces
1/3 C. Crumbled Blue Cheese
Ranch, for drizzling
Chives, for garnish

Directions:
1.
In a medium bowl, whisk together Hot Sauce and Mayonnaise.
2. Season with Salt and Pepper.

3. Add Shredded Chicken, mix to combine.

4. Spoon Chicken mixture into Celery Boats.

5. Top with Blue Cheese, drizzle with Ranch, and garnish with Chives.

Best kept chilled before servings.
Enjoy!

Huge Turnout for Mara Nevins and Tori's Angels Foundation

Friends of Mara Nevins
showed up by the hundreds at the benefit for Mara and Tori's Angels Foundation Saturday. June 24th.

Approximately 400 people came to show their love and support for Mara. Friends and supporters from Adel and surrounding communities were extremely generous with their donations for the free-will lunch and donated over 150 impressive silent auction items.

One organizer said, "
I'm so glad that we had such a great turn out and the community came out in full force!" The benefit was such a success that it may be the foundation's largest benefit yet.

Everyone signed a large "We Love You Mara" card to show their support. Mara's pre-school friends sang for her, and Mara was serenaded by her sister Cora and other friends. Children had their faces painted and a few enjoyed looking at their image in a full-length mirror up for bid in the silent auction.

Superheroes - Toris Angels
Superheroes from Justice Corps of Iowa posed for pictures with admiring, delighted children.

Everyone enjoyed a lunch of grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, chips, ice cream and delicious dessert bars baked by local friends.

Four-year-old Mara is the daughter of Lyle and Brandi Nevins of Adel. Mara was diagnosed with a brain tumor last year and had surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.

Her oncologist is now seeking alternate treatment for Mara that may include travel to another state. All trip expenses for Mara and her parents will be paid by the foundation for as many trips as might be needed.

Tori's Angels raises funds to help the families of their supported children who have life-threatening medical conditions . The foundation pays all medical expenses not covered by insurance from the date of sponsorship.

This includes travel expenses to treatment (airfare, hotel, meals), as well as medical co-pays, deductibles, and prescription medicine.

Tori's Angels Adel Fundraiser Crowd
The foundation recently accepted two additional children and now supports 23 children in Central Iowa (having sponsored a total of 29 children since 2010).

Members from seven of Tori's Angels supported families attended. One parent shared later, "We were very touched to see how many people came out to support Mara and the rest of the Tori's Angels kids. You could feel the support in the room." Tori's Angels wishes to thank everyone who made this event possible-from the planning group to each donor.

Those unable to attend the benefit and who wish to donate to help Mara and other Tori's Angels children are invited to send donations to the foundation's chairman, Bill Ridgley, at 4677 Panorama Dr, Panora IA 50216.

An online donation option is located on the Tori's Angels Facebook page. Supporters can "Like" the Tori's Angels Facebook page to receive regular updates on the children.

For more information about Tori's Angels or to request an application for support, contact the foundation's chairman, Bill Ridgley, at   bridgley@netins.net or 712-249-6423.

Terry Traveller Adel Oiwa
Terry Jonesing for Barbecue!
It is I, Terry Traveler, once again here to tell you what's worth knowing, and what's worth eating.

The other day a modern, stone-age friend of mine (who thinks he knows everything about bowling and driving barefoot) stated he knew the best place to get ribs. Now them, in my book, are fightin' words.

As you know, I take BBQ very seriously and insisted to know the location of said ribs. Fred knew of a funky little shack that claims to offer jurassic portions. I, of course, disagreed. For I am Terry Traveler, world renown BBQ aficionado and I know the best place to get ribs this side of the Raccoon is none other than Brick Street Barbecue in Adel.

Owner Merle Cox makes a beef brisket that will melt in your mouth. His pulled pork sandwiches have on numerous occasions called to me in the middle of the night and I am not ashamed to admit, I have obeyed. And the beans, the beans! Smoked alongside the meat for countless hours, this perfect cup of saucy, meaty goodness goes with everything.

But it is the ribs, my friends, that go above and beyond compare. Oh, how my mouth waters when I start to think about Brick Street Barbecue ribs. Perfectly seasoned and slow smoked, these are the ribs you see in movies and commercials. These are the kind of ribs that take time, and planning ahead is worth every moment. These are the. best. ribs.

The moral of the story? Try them yourself! Call Brick Street Barbecue and order some ribs, a few pork sandwiches, and plenty of beans for a special dinner at home or your next catered event.

Tell Merle that Terry Traveler of DiscoverAdel.com sent you- you might just get a few extra napkins. - Terry

Studio Q 360 - Adel Iowa
Summertime - Studio Q 360

Summertime and the living's easy, or so the song goes.

But we all know that summer is anything but easy.

Overlapping sporting events, family reunions, vacations, remodeling projects, yard work, hobbies, holidays, getting healthy, running the kids around, and oh yeah! Working 40+ hours a week.

Let's face it: Summertime is Exhausting so Book a Massage!

When life gets hectic, its important to take care of yourself. Sore muscles lead to fatigue and irritability. The last thing you want is to miss out on the fun or put off a project because you're laid up with an injury.

Yes, you are strong enough to run all those errands and keep track of all those events, at least for a while. But when you burn the candle at both ends all summer long, it will catch up to you.

Instead, relieve stress now. Carve out some time for self-care each month. Book a massage now, even if your first free hour is 2 weeks away. Simply knowing that you have therapeutic time set aside, just for you, can help relieve stress and anxiety.

Summertime may not be easy, so take care of yourself with a Studio Q 360 therapeutic massage. Call (515) 689-4754 to book your appointment today!
