Preparing Frontline Staff to Work with Immigrant and Refugee Populations - June 23, 2017

Intended for anyone who interacts directly with clients or the public, this workshop will provide an overview of the legal classifications and context of migration for arriving immigrants and refugees in the United States broadly, and those arriving in Illinois specifically. It will include a discussion of the interpreter/cultural broker role, along with strenghts/challenges with both phone and in-person interpretation. Finally, the workshop examines strategies of engagement, and common denominators of effective clinical practice with immgrants and refugees, with a focus on building resources networks and ongoing professional development.

 

Aimee Hilado, PhD, LCSW, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a PhD in Social Work, with Distinction, from Loyola University Chicago, and a M.S. in Applied Child Development from the Erikson Institute. Dr. Hilado is an Assistant Professer at Northeastern Illinois University Chicago, where she teaches Social Work Practice with Immigrants and Refugees, and serves as the Curriculum Specialist for the area of Human Behavior in the Social Environment.

2.0 CEUs for licensed nurses. Social Workers, Counselors and other mental health professionals should attend the 8:15-12:15 morning session specific to behavioral health providers.
