Junior High Pentathlon Awards
|
This Monday, 7th and 8th grade pentathletes from around Orange County piled into the Santa Ana High School Auditorium for the Junior High Pentathlon Awards. Parents and students nervously waited to hear their name to be called to go up on stage and be recognized for their dedication and determination in studying for pentathlon. Every year, Fairmont Private Schools competes in the Orange County Academic Pentathlon, which consists of the following events: math, science, social science, language and literature, and fine arts. Students are divided into grade categories, so pentathlon is not designed to be only for straight "A" students, which makes it a very unique academic event. Fairmont Anaheim Hills Campus, competing in the most challenging Division 1, did tremendously well this year in both 7th and 8th grade. Our 7th grade team won 25 individual medals, 1st place in Super Quiz, and 2nd place Overall Team. Our 8th grade team also won 25 individual medals, 2nd place in Super Quiz, and was the 2nd place Overall Team.

On Tuesday, April 25, Melina, Rylen, Kayden, and Kael joined hundreds of students from all over California to compete for top honors at the California State Science Fair, held at the California Science Center in Los Angeles (there were 927 students in the both Junior and Senior divisions!). Students presented their projects to up to 12 different judges during the morning session. At the end of judging, Melina was flooded by a group of judges and the media coming to present her with a special award for Outstanding Achievement in Science! For her achievement, she has been invited to another Science Fair competition (more details to come).
Following judging, Fairmont students from all three campuses enjoyed lunch at the USC Student Center Food Court and then explored the exhibits at the California Science Center. At the awards ceremony, later in the afternoon, Melina was awarded 1st place in the category of Environmental Engineering for her project
Catching VOC'c - The Effectiveness of Bromeliad Plants in the Extraction of Volatile Organic Compounds Versus that of an Electric Filter. Although Rylen was not called during the awards ceremony, when he arrived home that night he had an email waiting letting him know that there had been an error at the awards and he had earned 2nd place in the category of Chemistry for his project
Ouch...Pain! - Comparative Analysis of Over-the-Counter Pain Killers on pH of Stomach Acid.
Kael also competed in the category of Chemistry with his project
Electric Fruit - Comparative Analysis of Sustained Electrical Current using Different Types of Citrus Fruit. Kayden competed in the category of Zoology with her project
Testing the Effect of Magnetic Fields on the Regeneration of Planaria. Our students showed incredible dedication and hard work with their projects and presentations! Keep an eye out for these students in
the future, as their discoveries will build our future! We're so proud of each of them!!!

Summer Hosting Opportunities
This summer, Fairmont anticipates welcoming a record number of students from our Chinese and Korean partner schools. We are actively looking for Fairmont families willing to host these students. It is a wonderful opportunity for your family to learn about a different culture and share our own. The majority of the students will arrive in the beginning of July and depart at the end of the first week in August (tentatively July 1 to August 3).
These students are in high school and will attend school at Fairmont Preparatory Academy and will be able to take Fairmont t
ransportation. We also have junior high students coming for one to two weeks who will also attend classes at Fairmont Prep. In addition, we are expecting at least one group of
elementary students who will be at the Anaheim Hills
Campus. These students are expected to arrive in late July for two or three weeks. If you are interested in hosting, please contact Andrea Cribbs by
email
or phone at 714-234-2730. We invite you to attend an upcoming information night! The next one will be Tuesday, May 9, at 6:00 pm in the Historic Anaheim Campus library.

Week of the Young Child - Part 1
As I'm writing this, we are in the middle of the Week of the Young Child, and boy are we having fun!
On Monday, we kicked off the celebration with a Spring Fling marionette show. A lazy farmer, jumping flowers, eggs with legs, a salsa dancing duck, and a ballet dancing flamingo entertained preschool through junior kindergarten students with lively music and funny antics. We also got a special treat from Mr. Haynes, the marionette master, as he showed us how to make shadow box puppets, sock puppets, and pop-up puppets, and gave us a little show with each!
On Tuesday, the preschool through first grade students attended the ReadyOC Safety Assembly, where Ready Fox and his friends taught students how to safely prepare for and respond to emergencies such as earthquakes ("Drop, cover, and hold on!"), fires ("Get out, stay out!"), and floods ("Get to higher ground!"). Students received emergency preparedness information to take home to parents, and a ReadyOC bracelet to show they are ready!
Wednesday was another exciting day, with preschool and pre-k students getting their faces painted at recess and junior kindergarten and kindergarten students visiting with Big John Firetruck and learning about fire safety with Fireman Randy.
Be sure to check back here next week to read about the rest of our Week of the Young Child activities, and, as always, give a hug to your little one!

Literature Students Visit Medieval Times
On Tuesday, April 25, Mrs. Quarles and Mrs. Kunkle took 38 IFY English II students to Medieval Times in Buena Park as enrichment to the British literature they had been studying. The students attended the show after recently learning about knights and about the code of chivalry in their classes. In addition to this, they had also been exploring the long and arduous process it takes to become a knight, something that they were able to learn more about during the educational presentation, Medieval Times. To begin the show, the students were treated to a feast of chicken, corn, and potatoes that they were only allowed to eat using their bare hands. While at the show, the students were given the Blue Knight to cheer for as he performed tricks on his horse and competed in a few different tournaments. The students were able to observe the knights jousting, using their weapons, and partaking in a very exciting battle toward the end of the show. Mrs. Quarles' students enjoyed the experience and were happy to get the opportunity to learn more about the knights they had spent weeks studying.
