New SC State Record
Congratulations to GSRC's Caden Livingston, 9, of Conway for setting two new SC state records in the male 8-9 age category. Caden set the first one at the Historic Georgetown Bridge to Bridge 12k on October 29, 2016, with a time of 1:02:16, and the other at the Myrtle Beach Marathon on March 4, 2017, with a time of 1:38:29. Caden also set the 15k record at the Winter Run on January 21st. Best of luck to this talented and fast young man!

Boston Marathon Stories

This was my first Boston Marathon and my second marathon. (I qualified in MB in 2016 with a 3:16 time.) Boston was a very nice experience for me. The Boston Athletic Association did a great job of planning and executing the marathon. (A volunteer said, "We've had 121 years to get it right!") The weather was good, though hot, with some tailwind. I think those of us from SC had a training advantage over many others; lots of people had trouble with the heat. I started well-hydrated, ran my target pace, had good drinks along the way, and finished in 3:11:09 feeling good. The course is "tight" for the number of runners so there's very little passing in the first several miles (27000 runners on a 2-lane road started in 4 waves spaced 25 minutes apart). The best part of the experience was having so many enthusiastic spectators along the entire course. The "scream tunnel" of hundreds of Wellesley College coeds asking for kisses was the most memorable - lots of funny signs. The hills on the course get a lot of attention but they really aren't bad, though their location after 20 miles makes them more significant. I recommend the experience to anyone who can find the time to qualify and the time and money to attend. The MB Marathon is a great place to qualify.

This years' Boston probably required more perseverance than anything. Around mile 18 I had to give myself a stern talking to so as to combat all the negative thoughts that were circulating through my mind (or what was left of it). But, I did persevere and finished with the not so great time of 4:32. Had hoped for about 20 - 25 minutes faster, but it wasn't in the cards this year. So this Boston goes in my record book as my "second fastest" out of 3 BM's and now DONE!

Boston was an AMAZING experience for me! The day was hot, and I realized by mile 9, that my time goal was not to be achieved by me that day. I made a determination to ENJOY the experience! The crowd support and enthusiasm for all the runners was so appreciated and inspiring. It was such a blessing to be part of this historic event. Running the marathon in my home state of Massachusetts, and knowing the significance of all the BOSTON STRONG sentiment, just motivated me to do my best for the day and be thankful to be there. It was "wicked hard, but wicked awesome"!

I ran Boston with the Fearless 261 charity team and Kathrine Switzer. It was an awesome experience and I am thankful to have been able to participate in my (most likely) one and only Boston Marathon. Our team raised over $800,000 for women globally.
