Hey, what happened to April? Sometimes it seems like the months fly by--that's probably a result of getting older. Not that I would know...

There's a lot of good stuff in this month's newsletter--upcoming event, new product, builder blogs, tips and more. I hope you enjoy it.

If you have something to share about building your Glen-L boat, we welcome your contributions. It can be something simple that you discovered that helped you out and you'd like to share it with other builders. Just send it to me via email and I'll include it in an upcoming Newsletter and/or blog post.

The office will be closed on May 4 & 5 as we take a few days to visit our son and his wife in Idaho. We have yet to see the home they bought over a year ago! We hate closing, but such is the life of a small business. Any orders placed during that time will be shipped on Monday, May 8.

Glen-L has a ton of fastenings! Silicon bronze ring shank nails, bronze wood screws, carriage bolts, Finish Washers (new items!), and copper wire for Stitch & Glue construction and a bunch more. Click here to get your fastenings!

New April update! Dan Hennis has been working on his Goliath for almost a year now and many of us are enjoying following along with his build. He's made many unique changes on this design, many are somewhat experimental which makes it fun. That's the whole point of building your own boat. You get to use your own creativity.

We've added a "Part 2" to his blog because the first one got so long. I hope you'll follow along--you can read Part 2 of his blog here (there's a link to part 1 too).
When mixed, System Three Flotation Foam undergoes a chemical reaction that produces polyurethane foam in a 2 pound cubic foot density, United States Coast Guard approved for flotation. This foam also is an excellent insulation material that is unaffected by fuel, paint, solvents, polyester and epoxy resins. One quart of mix will produce about one cubic foot of foam. Each cubic foot of foam provides about 60 pounds of buoyancy. This Gallon Kit makes approximately 5 cubic feet.

February 28  – March 25 –  Ordered all the running gear from Glen-L (Strut, Shaft Log, Rudder Stuffing Box, water pick up, etc.).  It is now time to locate the strut and calculate where the propeller shaft goes through the hull.

My Riviera is 10% longer than the plans so I need to calculate the location of the strut and the hole thru the hull.  I started with the dimensions on plans for the rudder and propeller location (13.25 inches at the transom) and worked my way backwards.

I used Draftsight (free drafting software) to layout the angle of the propeller shaft (16 degrees based on the strut and shaft log purchased).  I then determined the strut location by the drop of the strut and then where the hole thru the hull should be.

I milled a flat surface on the center of the hull at the strut location.  I used the strut to mark the width at the location and then used a saw and chisel  Keep reading...

This book is the complete pictorial guide for building the Glen-L Torpedo, but because of its value in detailing the cold molded construction process, we are offering it separate from the plans.

The Torpedo is a 19 foot classic mahogany runabout and the proof boat was built by Glen-L boatbuilder, Roberta Hegy. Roberta took great care to document her entire build from start to finish with many photos and detailed explanations of the process.

This book is invaluable to those wishing to build any boat designed for cold molded construction. Roberta details every step of the build and doesn't hold anything back. After building two other Glen-L boats (the Zip and Super Spartan), she knows what she's doing.

Roberta takes you through every step of building from laying out the patterns for the frames to her beautiful finish work, interior and motor installation. Order your PDF download.

I guess everyone has their own finish and like what they’re used to working with, but I’m now completely sold on the SystemThree WR-LPU system. You can pretty much apply it with any method that you want, but you need to sand between every few coats.

Put on plenty of finish so that you can comfortably sand it without sanding through to the epoxy and you’re golden, you just sand up through the grits to 6000 with the trizac pads, then a little polishing and buffing and you have a great finish.

And Roberta (Glen-L Torpedo builder), thanks again for your support sharing your experience while I was experimenting with the SystemThree LPU product to find what I now believe to be a simple and infallible process. The automotive clearcoat is great, but you need some expertise in spraying. Continue Reading

Note: The organizer of this show tells me that they aren't real strict on the definition of "race" boats. Zips, Squirts and other designs are welcome.

*****Great Fender CleatsI*****

I purchased 6 of these for the Torpedo. I wanted extra because of the two different elevations of the sheers. These are very well made and very attractive. Nicely polished Stainless Steel that are easy to install and keep from snagging things when retracted. Roberta
