Wonga data breach: how to protect yourself
ActionFraud reports that Wonga has confirmed a data breach where up to 250,000 accounts have been compromised. Criminals can use personal data obtained from a data breach to commit identity fraud. What can you do to make yourself safer? Here are some useful tips from ActionFraud:
If your financial details are compromised, notify your bank or card company as soon as possible.
Review your financial statements regularly for any unusual activity.
Consider using credit reference agencies, such as Experian or Equifax, to regularly monitor your credit file for unusual activity.
Don't open the attachments or click on links within unsolicited emails.
Never disclose any personal or financial details during a cold call.
If you have been a victim of fraud or cyber crime,
More than 1,500 people tried to buy tickets from a fake ticket sales website set up by ActionFraud, helping to raise awareness of this prevalent fraud type, with more than 21,000 victims in the last 3 years.
Follow ActionFraud's guidelines to protect yourself from ticket fraud:
Only buy tickets from the venue's box office, the promoter, an official agent or a well-known and reputable ticket exchange site.
If you buy tickets from an individual, use a secure payment site such as PayPal.
Paying for your tickets by credit card will offer increased protection over other payments methods.
Check the contact details of the site for a landline phone number and a full postal address.
Avoid using the site if there is only a PO box address and mobile phone number.
Before entering any payment details, make sure the web address starts with https (the 's' stands for secure). There should be a locked padlock icon in the browser's address bar.
