Welcome to the Weekly Legislative Newsletter!

In an effort to keep our members informed and engaged, this year we will be sending out a weekly legislative update on what is going on in Albany. The Newsletter will include the status of legislation the League is following, upcoming committee meetings, rallies and press conferences the League is involved in, and any other session specific news we think would be of interest to members.

We hope that you will find this information helpful when doing your own advocacy work. If you have any questions or comments contact the League's Legislative Director, Jennifer Wilson at [email protected].

State of The State: January 3rd

On Wednesday, January 3rd, at 1:00 pm, Governor Cuomo will present his State of the State at the Albany Convention Center. The Governor has already unveiled much of what he hopes to cover this year including several voting and ethics reforms that the League supports. His voting package includes early voting, automatic voter registration, and same day voter registration.

Our hope is to see some funding for these proposals so that counties will have the proper funds to implement them. Tomorrow, January 3rd, you can watch the live webcast on the Governor's website here.

Press Conference on Ethics Reforms: January 4th

The League is working in coalition with our good government partners to advance ethics reforms in New York State. In light of the upcoming trials related to a massive $800 million state contact bid rigging scandal, we are calling on the Governor and the Legislative Leaders to pass meaningful ethics reforms that would ensure accountability and transparency for state contracting. We are also advocating for campaign finance reforms, a cap on outside income, and a more effective ethics watchdog agency.

Stay tuned for media clips and a copy of the full letter we will be sending to the Legislative Leaders.

  Voting Reform Rally: January 23rd

On January 23rd, the LetNYVote coalition is planning a rally in Albany to push for voting reforms in New York State. The rally will be followed by lobby visits. The coalition is planning buses from NYC and potentially buses from Long Island and the Hudson Valley.
You can register for the rally here.
If you do register, please let us know so we can keep track of League members and make sure you get a lobby visit!
