Move out is just around the corner, and the Center for Sustainable Communities is planning for another great year of waste diversion! Five years ago, we sent 42 tons of solid waste to the landfill. In 2016, that number was reduced to 27 tons because we were able to divert unwanted items from the waste stream for recycling and donation. Last Move Out Week, donations filled eight 18' trucks that were sent to thrift stores and 1300 pounds of food was collected for the local food pantry. We need your help to make Move Out Week 2017 a success! Volunteers are needed for two-hour shifts during finals week. If an organization wants to volunteer together, they can be rewarded $7.25 per worker per hour towards their organization. If students need work study hours and can commit to working several individual shifts, they will be paid for their help. Local Foods Feature: Impact Coffee Bar and Roasters
|
 As the end of the year approaches, student's coffee intake increases significantly! Luckily, Luther procures its coffee from Decorah's local Impact Coffee. Impact Coffee sources Fair Trade and Organic single-origin coffee beans from around the world and roasts them right here in Decorah. As Luther purchases all of its coffee from Impact, we are able to fulfill our local food goal of sourcing 98% of coffee and tea from fair trade organizations, all while supporting local businesses. One year anniversary of Solar Field Dedication
|
On Saturday, April 22, Luther College celebrated the one year anniversary of the solar field dedication on Pole Line Road. These three solar photovoltaic (PV) arrays are capable of producing 820 kW of electricity, and were financed through a third-party solar power purchase agreement with a local Iowa corporation, Oneota Solar, LLC. The project is an example of an innovative and forward-thinking partnership that will benefit the local economy and the college. Luther expects to save at least $1 million in electricity costs over the 20-year life of the system. The installment is in alignment with the college's goal of being carbon neutral by 2030. Finished with your school supplies? Don't throw them out! Put them in the Supply Reuse closet in Valders. Give your school supplies new life so that somebody can use them again next year! Gently used folders, binders, spiral notebooks with paper, pencils, pens, paperclips, staplers, tape, all school supplies have a home in the closet. Not sure where this wonderland is? Watch

|
Samantha Clements is a sophomore Political Science student from Aurora, Illinois. Samantha's first exposure to the Center for Sustainable Communities was through the Immersion Program she participated in before her first year at Luther. She first started working for Sustainability on the Recycling and Compost Crew. Now, Samantha works as an Immersion Assistant Coordinator and as one of the Marketing and Communications Coordinators, where she assists with Immersion Program planning and preparation and marketing and communicating various sustainable efforts and events around campus. Her favorite part about working for the Center for Sustainable Communities is being able to spread the word and participate in positive changes being made on Luther's campus. Outside of working for the Center of Sustainable Communities, Samantha is a Level 1 Certified Archer, and can teach you how to shoot arrows, too! She looks forward to sharpening her skills on the range this summer.
