Social Justice Curriculum Award Sponsored Again by NYU's Wagner School of Public Service and FIU's Green School of International & Public Affairs
NASPAA would like to thank Sherry Glied, Dean of New York University's Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, and Mohammad Alkadry, Director of the Master of Public Administration Program at Florida International University (FIU) for agreeing to sponsor the NASPAA Social Justice Curriculum Award again for 2017. The 2017 recipient (a faculty member or faculty team) will receive $1,000 at the NASPAA Annual Conference in October in Washington, DC. This award promotes the incorporation of a social justice lens into the core curriculum of a NASPAA school; a faculty member or faculty team will show how social justice principles have been incorporated into the syllabus and teaching activities of at least one core course. Nominations can be submitted by an individual or a program and self-nominations are encouraged. For more information about this and the other NASPAA Awards click here. Pi Alpha Alpha Chapter Advisors: Apply NOW for Chapter Mini-Grants and a special Public Service Loan Forgiveness advocacy grant
NASPAA and the Pi Alpha Alpha Committee announce the creation of two new opportunities to help Pi Alpha Alpha chapters expand their work of raising the awareness on the importance of public service and inspiring students to pursue careers in public service. This fall at the NASPAA Annual Conference in Washington, DC, two chapters will receive a Pi Alpha Alpha Chapter Mini-Grant. The $2,000 mini-grants will be used for programming for professional development, networking, community service, and/or the promotion of public service careers. These grants cannot be used for induction or commencement ceremonies. The Public Service Loan Forgiveness Mini-Grants will be awarded to two Pi Alpha Alpha Chapters to implement grassroots/advocacy plans that use students and alumni to outreach to and educate their members of Congress about the significance of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF). These $500 grants can be used for organizing letter writing and/or phone calling campaigns; lobbying members of congress in Washington and/or in their local districts, or creating and posting videos to various social media channels. Since NASPAA is a nonpartisan organization, Chapters are reminded that students should present evidence-based policy analysis, and that students with different views are encouraged to participate.

Public Service Recognition Week

For more than 30 years, NASPAA has been a board member and
supporter of
Public
Service Recognition Week
(PSRW). The week is an annual celebration of public servants across the country and throughout the public sector. We honor Federal, state and local employees, city managers, fire/EMS professionals, nonprofit experts and more-- for the
ways in which they serve the public and strive to maintain their trust.
Pi Alpha Alpha chapters and other student groups are encouraged to do some hands-on things to publicly recognize the contributions of public servants: why not write an op-ed, profile some of your alumni who now work in government in your area, or request a proclamation from your university president or mayor in honor of Public Service Recognition Week?

PPIA's Public Service Weekends (PSW) are weekend programs for rising undergraduate sophomores and juniors. The goal for this program is to introduce students to topics in the field of public service through expertise provided by university faculty, graduate student panels, and skill workshops. The audience for the conference can be drawn from either a regional or a national pool of candidates depending on the desired size and scope the host institution has for the event. Over the course of the conference, students are introduced to faculty and staff from the host institution(s), as well as workshops the offer insight into what it's like to be involved in public policy and administration. Additionally, students are given advice on applying for admission and financial aid. Time for extracurricular activities and exploration of the campus and surrounding area is recommended to further the attending students' interests in locations where public service careers take place. By the end of the program, students have a fundamental understanding of the knowledge necessary for pursuing advanced degrees and careers in public service. They also would understand the responsibilities of that work and have a greater interest in seeking further knowledge at the graduate level.

NASPAA is thrilled to announce the return of NASPAA NEXT at the 2017 NASPAA Annual Conference in Washington, DC on
Wednesday, October 11. The four-hour workshop, will provide emerging leaders in their departments or programs with practical tools that will enable them to become more engaged and dynamic members of their campuses and communities. Participation in NASPAA NEXT is by invitation only, and invitations are based on recommendations from deans and other senior faculty, professional reputation and scholarly research, as well as participation in NASPAA activities.
In response to the 2017 NASPAA Annual Conference Theme -
"Confidence in Public and Nonprofit Sectors: How is it Built, How is it Lost, and How is it Regained?" - this year NASPAA NEXT will focus on Track 3 of the conference:
Building Public Trust Through Responsible Policy Communications and Advocacy. Participants will learn strategies for communicating groundbreaking research to public policy leaders, nonprofit practitioners, and the public at large. Additionally, emerging faculty will discuss the importance of advocating for the use and implementation of public policy analysis from NASPAA schools, faculty, and students. Also important is the ability to communicate and advocate for ideas that are generated in other countries and being able to identify what programs can be implemented domestically and vice versa. Through these actions our public and nonprofit institutions can inspire public confidence by implementing policies based solid empirical analysis that deliver results. Moreover, participants will learn how to become more fully engaged with NASPAA by ensuring their talents and knowledge base are strategically aligned with leadership opportunities for the association. Finally, participants will engage in a group project after the Annual Conference designed to make public policy analysis visible to policy makers and the general public. We are in discussions with several faculty members to lead this dynamic workshop.

NASPAA's 2017 Alumni Survey will launch Monday,
May 15, 2017. Now is the time to start compiling your list of alumni contact information. This year we will be surveying the 2013-2014 cohort. For more information regarding the Alumni Survey and past year's results go to:

NASPAA is now accepting applications to host the 2017 NASPAA Career Professionals Conference!
The host school has tremendous opportunity to shape the agenda and move the conversation forward on many issues that career professionals are facing. The host school will also receive publicity and exposure to the greater NASPAA community as the school will be identified in all promotional materials. Typically 50 - 60 career professionals from NASPAA member schools attend the conference each year.

One of the major projects NASPAA will be undertaking this year is a review and update of our website (www.naspaa.org). As the main audience for the website, other than perspective students, we are interested in your feedback in how we can improve the usability and value to you our members and stakeholders.
As you use the NASPAA website in the coming months please be thinking about what improvements you think can be made or what you'd like to see in a new NASPAA website. We will be sending out a survey to the membership at large as we begin this project and your feedback will play an important role as we move to a more modern NASPAA website. Keep an eye out for the coming survey!

Interested in exploring accreditation data?
Programs seeking accreditation provide NASPAA and COPRA with a plethora of data, describing students, faculty, competencies, and program evaluation. COPRA encourages researchers to explore these data and study the field at-large, emerging trends, and best practices. As such, it has approved new research
guidelines
to provide advice and transparency to those researchers seeking to explore data collected on behalf of the accreditation process. Note, much of the data provided by programs seeking (re)accreditation are available

In Case You Missed It!
COPRA released the Self-Study Instructions, for programs in the 2017-18 cohort. For the 2016 release, COPRA focused on completion rates, enhancing the quality and comparability of one of the most critical outcomes of public affairs programs and ensuring the comprehensive context of students continuing to graduation outside of four years.
COPRA also released a
policy statement
announcing the implementation expectations of programs in the 2018-19 and 2019-20 cohorts, with regard to Standard 5, as well as additional information related to the completion rates data requirements.
