The sun is shining and the weather is gorgeous ... and if it isn't at this exact moment, give it a day or two -- that's springtime in Ohio. We are starting several new projects, so we likely won't have much time to enjoy the nice days (please enjoy them for us). But we love keeping busy and even brought on a new electrical apprentice, Brenton, to help us keep up.

We are also welcoming a new member into our extended TEAM DDS family, Jason Atkinson's granddaughter, Haven Rose (check out the scrapbook for a photo of this cutie).

Hope you've been keeping busy and have nothing but bright, shiny days in your future.

Smiles to you,

All of us at TEAM DDS

The Finishing Touch: What Paint To Pick

When it comes to paint, not only must you pick a color, but you need to select the finish you want. In general, there are five different paint finishes. While the exact names may vary, they are

  • Matte
  • Eggshell
  • Satin
  • Semi-Gloss
  • High Gloss

The shinier the paint, the more durable it is and easier to clean, however, it also means that surface imperfections will be more noticeable.

Not sure what to choose? If it helps, most of the offices we're painting tend to use an eggshell finish because it is relatively easy to clean, has a slight luster but doesn't attract attention to nicks or dings that may happen over time. Also, when we've painted accent walls -- one wall that is a different color than the rest, or has a special texture -- that is usually done in a semi-gloss paint.

For a more detailed explanation about the different paint finishes check out this article.

A Bright Idea

Quiz time! What do you know about LEDs? If you're like most folks, you probably have a limited understanding. That's why we reached out to Ahmet Alasyali, junior principal at Spectrum Lighting -- a genuine expert -- for help.

First, LED stands for light-emitting diode. The technology became commercially popular about 10 years ago and is best known for providing tremendous energy and cost reductions. The lights use 85% less energy than a standard halogen light and radiate up to 85% more light. (And now you're ready for trivia night!)

An LED has an average life of around 50,000 hours (and improving all the time) -- much longer than any other type of lighting technology -- and LED doesn't emit dangerous UV rays. Additionally, the technology causes LED to generate heat differently. This translates to about 90% less heat at the bulb than a standard halogen light -- making them cool to the touch.

Those are the simple LED facts Ahmet shared, now is where things become complicated ...

Who To Call First?

When it comes to your next construction project, there is a big debate about who you should talk to first. We firmly believe that you should reach out to a qualified dental/medical contractor first. Of course, we may be a bit bias, but hear us out. A good contractor can help you with

  • site/building selection
  • space design and flow
  • connect you with professional services, e.g., banker, real estate agent, insurance provider, architect and attorney
  • advise you on the general feasibility of your project

Now, of course, reaching out to a contractor will do you no good if you haven't at least given some thought to

  • the goal of your project
  • a rough idea of your budget/what you can afford
  • an ideal timeline
  • what your dream and nightmare outcomes would be

Having a bit of an idea of what you are looking for and getting a contractor involved in the process early can ensure your dream becomes reality while helping you avoid situations that could delay your project or increase your costs.
