JCDS Invites the Community to Celebrate Yom Ha'atzmaut

May 2nd from 10:00 am-12:30 pm at Jewish Community Day School
Jewish Community Day School is dedicated to creating positive connections to the people, culture, language, and State of Israel! Sixty-nine years ago, a modern miracle occurred; the creation of the modern State of Israel. Following one of the most horrific ordeals of its long history, the Jewish people, and their supporters, breathlessly awaited the final result of the agonizingly slow United Nations vote for the result that would change the course of Jewish and world history. As each Resolution 181 vote was cast, a mark was tallied in the Yea, Nay, or Abstain column. The moment had come: 33 votes in favor, 13 against, 10 abstentions and one absent. The way was paved for the birth of the independent State of the Jewish people.

The entire community is invited to share in the celebration on Tuesday, May 2nd for Grandparents and Special Friends Day AND the 69th anniversary of Israel's   independence.   Join us as we:
Marvel at the New Orleans Family Artifact Israel Museum - created by all of us!
With the community's help, JCDS will create an Israel Museum that includes your family's Israel mementos. JUST send in or drop off an Israel related family artifact to JCDS. It might be an actual item, a special photograph, or a memory you share. Include a card with your name and a description of the artifact. On May 2nd, guests will enjoy a self-guided gallery tour through the museum to learn about how our lives are part of the history of modern Israel.

Witness a reenactment of the historic U.N. Vote
Students will re-enact the suspenseful November 29, 1947 United Nations vote to partition the British-ruled Palestine, allowing for the formation of the Jewish state of Israel. Each child will represent a country and, one by one, cast their vote. The audience, and participants, will experience the anticipation leading up to the final result!

Celebrate together with singing, dancing and a delectable Israeli Feast!

Call 504-887-4091  or email
[email protected] for more information or to include an Israel item in the one-day  museum.

Education Director Search Update

The education director search committee has been diligently working to find the right candidate for Shir Chadash.  Marc Silberstein who visited our community last month has accepted a position elsewhere. At this time, we are especially focused on finding the right candidate to lead our growing religious school and Shabbat morning youth program. We are excited that Jennie Lavine, a current religious school teacher and regular  davener  at Shir Chadash, is currently a candidate to join our staff to lead the religious school and youth education at Shir Chadash and do family and community engagement. Religious school parents are invited to meet with Jennie during a meet and greet this Sunday April 30th at 11:00 a.m. in the Beit Midrash.

Jennie L avine is a Jewish musician and educator.  Her work is unified by the goal of fostering community, personal expression and a sense of continuity with those who came before.  Some of her favorite tools for this include group music making, movement and attention training exercises (e.g., mindfulness practices and yoga), and story-telling activities.  She currently facilitates group classes that focus on New Orleans traditions at the Musicollaborative and Make Music NOLA and on Jewish traditions and values here at the Shir Chadash 'shul school'. As a professional musician, you can find her playing her clarinet in New Orleans and beyond, performing Yiddish music, Jewish spiritual songs, Brazilian choro and early jazz and blues.

GiveNOLA Day

If you are looking for a fun way to help Shir Chadash financially, point your browser to: https://www.givenola.org/shir-chadash-conservative-congregation

Involve friends and family by getting different people to make donations in each hour on May 2, from 00:00 to 1am and so on through 11:59pm. Shir Chadash has a chance to win in any of those hours we receive donations.

To be more in the NOLA spirit, there are "Throw me somethin' mister" times for us to be awarded for donations: 6 to 6:59 am, 2 to 2:59 pm and 10-10:59 pm

This program has helped more non-profits each year it has run, even with the tech problems last year.

So, if you are looking to make a contribution of any sort soon, consider choosing GiveNOLA day and help Shir Chadash become a financial winner. Remember also, each unique contribution of $10 or more enables us to also receive Lagniappe funds from the GNO Foundation
