Rector's Reflections
|
Change of Heart and Direction
The people who hear Peter's testimony and preaching are cut to the heart. The writer of 1 Peter instructs believers to love deeply from the heart. The disciples who encounter the risen Christ notice afterward that their hearts were "burning" within them as Jesus reveals the scriptures and then himself to them in the breaking of the bread. Whether a call to repentance, hope, recognition, or love, people are deeply affected by encounters with the one raised from death to become followers of Jesus' way. They not only turn from their sin and doubt but literally change direction, going back from Emmaus to Jerusalem with renewed courage, faith, and hope. These heart-changing encounters with Jesus fulfill a promise from God for the whole community, from those who have lived a long life to those who are children. [Sundays and Seasons, 2017]
This Sunday we will hear the gospel from Luke 24 that begins with two disciples walking to Emmaus, overcome with sadness, loss, and disappointment. They were blinded by their mistaken expectations about what God was doing in Jesus. They had hoped Jesus, who was crucified, would be the one to redeem Israel! Yet the risen Christ walks with them, and then opens their eyes in the breaking of the bread. Each Sunday our hearts burn within us as the scriptures are proclaimed and Christ appears to us as bread is broken and wine is poured. The story of Emmaus becomes the pattern of our worship each Lord's day.
Come taste and see the Risen One in worship on Sunday. The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia!

Thursday Bible Study @ 3:00 pm and Midweek Eucharist @ 4:00 pm
We will wrap-up our study of Paul's Letter to the Romans on Thursday, May 4th and begin a new study on the Book of Ruth. The Book of Ruth is a bridge between the unruly end of the period of the judges (see Judges 21:25) and the beginning of the kingdom ruled by David and his descendants. The author might have been a village teacher, such as a priest, or a wise woman, who told ancestral stories to instruct and inspire the people.
The incredibly rich story told in the book of Ruth captures the fears, challenges, and hope of those who find themselves pulled away from home and of those who are there when they return. In this book we are invited into the deep emotions and conversations of the three central characters of Ruth, Naomi, and Boaz, while exploring the themes of loss, loyalty, risk, and hope.
Join us Thursdays in the Beck Memorial Library starting May 11th as we'll delve into these questions from Ruth in the coming weeks:
- Where Does Loss Push Us? (Ruth 1:1-18)
- Where Does Loyalty Pull Us? (Ruth 1:19-2:23)
- Where Does Risk Take Us? (Ruth 3:1-18)
- Where Does Hope Lead Us? (Ruth 4:1-22)

CONGREGATION CARE TEAMS
The ministry of caring is at the heart of the church's life. One of the ways we embody the love of Jesus Christ to one another is by caring for each other. Summer Fair Announcements
|
photo taken on April 23rd
The following announcements were given by Jay Wyman at the 8 AM Service and by Joanne Crowe at the 10 AM Service.
HI Everyone,
This is a reminder that we will have a summer fair meeting this Sunday, April 30th between the two services. Jay and I are preparing an agenda. If there is anything you would like us to bring up please let me know. Of course, you are always welcome to just bring your ideas to the meeting.
We have created a Summer Fair Bulletin Board in the Undercroft. There are signup sheets for the booths on the bulletin board. The good news is that as soon as we put the signups on the bulletin board today, folks were signing up. What a great community we are part of!!!!
At services on Sunday, we will remind folks that the signups are happening and of course ask for assistance. We are particularly in need of a chair for the Home Goods Booth. If you know of anyone , please tap them or ask me to talk with them.
We also need to remind folks that there is very limited room in the garage for storage, it would be best if folks keep their donation items at home until June 11th, move in day.
Again, Jay and I are looking forward to working with all of you and making this yet another successful and fun fair.
Blessings and safe travels to our friends heading home soon.
Joanne & Jay

Summer Fair Basket Raffle
|
The Basket Raffle Committee is looking for about 8 fun and unique raffle baskets for the 2017 Summer Fair. Anyone considering a basket donation should contact Joy Jones or Carolyn Sundquist as soon as possible. If you are unsure of what to do, we can help with suggestions for a theme (or maybe no theme at all).
Ideally we would like the baskets by the end of June. Tickets could then be sold ahead of the fair.
Blessings -
Joy and Carolyn

Arlene Salzgeber

photo taken on April 23rd
Arlene and her late husband Dan have a long history with Wolfeboro. They vacationed here starting in 1966, and purchased their property in 1978. They moved here permanently in 1994, and joined All Saints in 2010.
Arlene's ministry includes Lord and Tailor, Called to Care Counseling, Office Angels, Flower Delivery, and Coffee Hour. She also drives for Caregivers.
Arlene is one who works well behind the scene, and every project that has her commitment is better because of her efforts.
Arlene feels blessed to have our church in her life. She feels grateful that God is in her life, and all of us are fortunate to have her in our lives, too.

Episcopal Church of NH Lay Leadership Institute 2017
|
Registration is now open for the 2017 Lay Leadership Institute (LLI). We are offering ten different seminars this year, more than ever before. The LLI will take place in the Rundlett Middle School in Concord on Saturday, May 6. As before, a continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. Registration is on a first come, first served basis. Since each seminar is limited by room size to 30 persons, and seminar leaders may cancel a seminar with fewer than six registrants, it is vital that you signal your intention to attend by registering in advance. Participants are asked to register for their first, second, and third choices. Registrants will receive confirmation of registration and seminar selection by email. Information on the seminars may be found on our diocesan website: www.nhepiscopal.org/lay-leadership
Please email Deb in the office if you wish to register.
