The Milkhik State, Thursday, February 16
|
Thursday, February 16, 7:00pm, "The Milkhik State: The Surprising Jewish History of Wisconsin," presented by Andy Muchin.
In this illustrated presentation, Andy Muchin will detail Wisconsin Jewry's remarkable individual, family, and community histories.
A bisl (a little) Yiddish culture included, too.
Jews have lived in Wisconsin almost continuously since 1793, when Jacob Frank established a fur-trading outpost in Green Bay.
Wisconsin's Jewish population peaked at more than 39,000 preceding World War II before dropping to approximately 26,000 today.
Still, Wisconsin Jewry has contributed much to the world: an Israeli prime minister, the world's greatest escape artist, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, elected officials (including two U.S. senators), an All-Star baseball outfielder, artists, activists, farmers, rabbis, and an honorary Winnebago tribal chief. Wisconsin also is a national center for Jewish summer camps and home to two university Jewish studies departments.

Shanghai Angel, Thursday Feb. 23 and Sunday Feb. 26
|
Thursday, February 23, 6:30-8:00pm Sunday, February 26, 3:00-4:30pm "Shanghai Angel" (premiere), with Heather Klein and Joshua Horowitz.
With $2.50 in her pocket, Rosa Ginsberg left her family behind in Shanghai in 1940 for an uncertain future in the United States. The 18-year-old, who had fled war-torn Vienna for China, landed at Angel Island, site of a U.S. immigration station that processed hundreds of thousands of immigrants from 1910 to 1940. Ginsberg was detained there for three weeks and released on the basis of a mostly true story. Ginsberg's granddaughter, vocalist Heather Klein, has created a one-woman musical based on her grandmother's journey.
Musical arrangements, percussion, and piano accompaniment by Joshua Horowitz. Choreography and direction by Bruce Bierman. Short presentation about Angel Island after each performance.
