FEATURED EVENT: Hilhi Students Adopt Sparrow
At an assembly on Friday, Dec. 8, 2017, Hilhi's Sparrow Club introduced their Sparrow for the 2017-18 school year: Nathan. Nathan is a 9-year-old boy with spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy, as well as hearing, visual, and breathing impairments. Despite his many challenges, Nathan is a happy child who enjoys books, meeting new people, playing with his two brothers, and being outdoors. His multiple medical issues have led to very high expenses for doctor visits, surgeries, special food, therapy, and equipment for his care. Now, his family will receive some relief thanks to the efforts of Hilhi students. Through sponsored community service and fundraising, students will collect money to be donated to Nathan's family.

30-Day Notice for 2017-18 Statewide Tests
State law requires that each Oregon school district notify families of their right to exempt (opt out) their child from the summative English language arts and/or math tests given in the spring, including the Smarter Balanced and Extended Assessments. The state has created a
form, available online or at your child's school, that families can use to exempt their child from the testing. Parents or guardians who intend to exempt their child from testing must inform their school office and return a completed opt-out form. Please see our
website for additional information.

Five Reasons Why Students Should Take the Smarter Balanced Assessments
It can be easy to knock standardized testing as a rigid, point-in-time snapshot of what students actually know, have learned, and can demonstrate. However, it does provide useful information on achievement trends and allows for comparisons to be made between years, schools and school districts, and so on. There are also benefits to the students who take them. Click
