Please open your hearts and your wallets and make checks out to the order of GESHEM FUND and give to Rabbi Raccah or put in the mailbox of the office or the shul and Ayelet will give it to Rabbi Raccah.  As you thank Hashem for all that He has blessed you with, remember the less fortunate who are struggling and in desperate need of assistance. Sponsor Learning in the Kollel

Our Rabbis tell us of the great power and merit associated with supporting Torah learning. To that end, consider sponsoring a night, a week or a month of learning in the Kollel. Examples of sponsorship purposes include: in memory of a deceased loved one for their Azkarah, to merit a Rifuah Shilamah, or to honor a loved one or friend. In addition to the great merit of supporting Torah in our community, your sponsorship will be marked with printed pages noting the intent of your support that are placed in stands on the tables in the Beit HaMidrash for the duration of your sponsorship period.

Here are the costs for the various sponsorships:

A night of learning -  $52
A week of learning -  $100
A month of learning - $400

The Kollel appreciates the following sponsors of learning:

A week of learning has been sponsored anonymously for January 3-10 in memory of Einav HaLevi ben Esther. May his Neshama merit an Aliyah.

A week of learning has been sponsored for January 3-10 by Levi Ovadia ben Avraham Moalem for a Zechut for Bracha and Hatzlacha.

A month of learning has been sponsored anonymously for the month of January. The Kollel thanks the patrons for their generosity.

Halacha of the Week

Reciting a Blessing on the Aroma of Coffee

Question: May one recite a blessing on the pleasant aroma emanating from coffee?

Answer: In the Halachot published approximately a month ago, we have written that one must recite the appropriate blessing on any pleasant-smelling object. For instance, a kind of tree branch which emits a pleasant smell, such as a Haddas (myrtle branch), requires the "Boreh Atzeh Besamim" blessing.
If one takes a pleasant-smelling fruit to smell, such as an Etrog, pineapple, and the like, one must recite the blessing of "Baruch Ata Hashem Elokeinu Melech Ha'Olam Ha'Noten Re'ach Tov Ba'Perot."

It therefore seems that since coffee is a type of fruit which is ground and drunk as a beverage, if one smells it with the intention of enjoying its pleasant smell, one must recite the "Ha'Noten Re'ach Tov Ba'Perot" blessing.

Nevertheless, this matter is indeed subject to a disagreement among the Poskim. Indeed, the Rishonim disagree whether or not one recites a blessing on the pleasant smell of freshly-baked bread. Halachically speaking, Maran Ha'Shulchan Aruch rules that one should not recite a blessing on the wafting scent of freshly-baked bread because of the doubt involved. Maran Rabbeinu Ovadia Yosef zt"lrules likewise in his Chazon Ovadia-Berachot (page 328).

Hagaon Harav Yaakov Chaim Sofer (a great sage who emigrated from Baghdad to Jerusalem in the previous generation) writes in his Sefer Kaf Ha'Chaim that just as we do not recite a blessing on freshly-baked bread, one should likewise not recite a blessing on the pleasant scent emanating from hot coffee, for the aroma is not that enjoyable that one would be obligated to recite a blessing on it.

On the other hand, most Acharonim, including the Perach Shoshan, Yad Aharon, and others, are of the opinion that one must recite a blessing on the pleasant smell emanating from coffee. They write that the correct blessing for this is "Ha'Noten Re'ach Tov Ba'Perot."

After quoting the opinion of the Poskim who rule that one should recite a blessing on the pleasant scent emanating from coffee, Maran Rabbeinu Ovadia Yosef zt"l concludes that if one recites a blessing on the pleasant smell emanating from coffee when one intends to specifically smell it indeed has on whom to rely, for this is the opinion of most Poskim. (ibid. page 329)

Summary: If one specifically intends to smell the wafting scent of pleasantly-smelling coffee, one has on whom to rely if one recites the blessing of "Ha'Noten Re'ach Tov Ba'Perot," for this is the majority opinion among the Poskim.

Shared Cost Sidewalk Program

The Shared Cost Sidewalk Program will open to new applicants on Tuesday, January 9, 2018. You have several options for applying this year: Call 311 or apply online by visiting www.cityofchicago.org/311 and creating a "Sidewalk Survey" service request starting at midnight.

PLEASE NOTE: The Shared Cost Sidewalk Program operates on a first-come, first-served basis and is extremely popular. Last year, the program filled up in just 12 hours. Whichever option you choose, make sure to enroll as soon as possible after the program opens.

The Shared Cost Sidewalk Program is an extremely popular service in which residents share the cost of sidewalk repair with the City. Property owners will pay a price per square-foot for new sidewalk that is well below what a private contractor would charge. The scope of the program may include the main walk, the existing courtesy walk (which runs perpendicular from the main sidewalk to the curb) and existing landing steps (the small strip of concrete sometimes found adjacent to the curb).

For more information, please visit the Chicago Department of Transportation's (CDOT) website here. For any questions, please contact CDOT at (312) 744-1746 or email [email protected].
