Sherman Leadership and Faculty Help Serve Nearly 50,000 During CREW Mission Trip to Panama
(Submitted by Dean of Clinical Sciences Armand Rossi, D.C.)
During the last week of March, 10 members of the Sherman College administration and faculty joined 39 other chiropractors from around the world on a week-long mission trip to Panama sponsored by Chiropractors Restoring Energy Worldwide (CREW). The trip was a fantastic opportunity to administer chiropractic care to a massive number of people in Panama. The final numbers showed 49,170 adjustments delivered in 5 days by 49 D.C.s. I’d like to let some of our Sherman people tell you about it in their own words. Read more on our blog.
Anatomy Faculty Attend Memorial Service for Donors
Sherman faculty members recently helped honor the individuals and families of those who donated their bodies to science during the previous year as they attended a service of commemoration at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia, which supplies Sherman College’s lab with donor bodies.

Anatomy Lab Manager Edgardo Rivera, M.D., and faculty members Kimberley Fielder D.C., ’06, Terry Lancaster, M.S., and Princess Porter-Fowler, D.C., ’01, represented Sherman College at the event, which nearly 300 of the donors’ relatives, friends and supporters attended. The purpose of the brief non-denominational memorial service was to enable students and faculty to pay their final respects and show their appreciation for the great service that individual donors and their family members have provided.

“It was a privilege to interact with the donors’ relatives and friends and express our sincere appreciation for the great service their loved ones’ donations have provided,” Rivera said of the event. Sherman representatives also had the opportunity to meet with USC’s Gift of Body Program Director Ericka Blanck, DPT, ATC, as well as Executive Dean of the USC School of Medicine Les Hall, M.D., and Administrative Coordinator Lisa Buchanan.
Student Ambassador
Quarterly Dinner and Awards

The Sherman College Student Ambassadors had an adventure-filled quarterly dinner and meeting earlier this month at Escape Room Adventures to kick of the new quarter and celebrate accomplishments from the winter quarter.

Twelve ambassadors took the escape room challenge, attempting to break out of a room within one hour by following clues and solving puzzles. This challenge was one of many team-building and leadership exercises the Ambassadors participate in on a consistent basis.

Quarterly awards were also issued to the following Ambassadors: Aixa Santos (Showcase Star Award), Chris Marrone (Ambassador of the Quarter), and a special recognition and farewell to Letitia Clay and Lauren Corvi (Officers of the Quarter).

Dooley, Tate Present
at ACC-RAC 2017

Sherman College faculty member and Director of the G10 Practice Success Program Brian Dooley, D.C., ’05, A.C.P., recently presented a poster at the March 2017 Association of Chiropractic Colleges Research Agenda Conference (ACC-RAC) in Washington, DC. His poster highlighted his findings that although chiropractic students are under more stress than the general population, they still function at an as good or higher level, demonstrating improved quality of life using the PROMIS survey.

Representing both Sherman College of Chiropractic and the International Pediatric Chiropractic Association, Health Center Assistant Case Doctor Tate Gentile, D.C., presented “The Interpersonal Processes of Care Experienced by Patients in a Chiropractic Teaching Clinic.”

SMC Athletes Share Benefits of Chiropractic Care
As part of its efforts to enhance community outreach and improve lives with chiropractic care, Sherman College and its neighbor Spartanburg Methodist College (SMC) share a collaborative agreement where student interns and faculty members from Sherman provide chiropractic care for the benefit of SMC student athletes. The college provided 182 patient visits during SMC’s spring semester, from January through April 2017.

SMC student-athlete and Trailblazer staff writer Jasmine Hoover recently wrote an article for the institution’s student publication about her experience as a chiropractic patient. “As an athlete, using chiropractic… has helped me tremendously,” she said. “I will continue to visit them each week they come to the school. They are so friendly and very passionate about what they do.”

Read more of what the SMC student-athlete has to say about the partnership and her experiences under care at the Trailblazer website.

The collaboration between Sherman College and SMC was born of a time-honored tradition of integrative care for athletes and, of course, the goal of contributing to the athletes’ enhanced performance with chiropractic care.
Pioneer Graduate Fran Lounsbury, D.C., Honored
Fran Lounsbury, D.C., ’76, of Princeton, WV, holds the distinction of being the first Sherman College graduate to open a practice. Her story is now told in the Gallery of Honor decorating the halls of the Scallon Building near classrooms where students can learn about individuals of distinction in the history of the college.

Accepting the call for chiropractors to establish a practice in underserved West Virginia, this Connecticut native moved to West Virginia without knowing anyone there, determined to succeed. Her pioneering spirit moved her to embark on an adventure that brought a fulfilling career of helping the residents of Princeton lead better lives through chiropractic.

In 2003 Lounsbury was one of only 22 recipients in the country to receive the Ronald Reagan Gold Medal Award for Business. She was named West Virginia’s Outstanding Business Woman of the Year in 2006 for the quality of service in her chiropractic office. She has written five children’s books that serve as educational introductions to various aspects of chiropractic, the first of which was written as an assignment in a philosophy class at Sherman College.

Failure was not an option for this Sherman pioneer. “Chiropractic has served me well,” she says, “and so I have been able to serve my community well.”
D.C.s Gather to Discuss
Green Books at PSCA Ignite Event

Local chiropractors gathered at a restaurant in Spartanburg earlier this month to discuss chiropractic philosophy (from the Green Books) and how it applies to everyday practice life. The event was presented as part of the Palmetto State Chiropractic Assocation’s Ignite series.

Among those in attendance were several doctors sharing a connection to Ron Sisk, D.C. Pictured from left to right are Jonathan Sisk, D.C., ’09; Mark Fullerton, D.C., ’84; Ron Sisk, D.C.; and Terry Van Dervort, D.C., ’81. Fullerton and Vandervort worked with Ron Sisk while they were students at Sherman; Ron Sisk referred his son Jonathan to Sherman.

College Welcomes New
Student Ambassador Officers

Three new officers were elected for the Student Ambassador program in March.

Aixa Santos (president), Chris Marrone (vice president), and Andretti Montalvo (secretary) have begun their one-year terms and will be working to strengthen the Ambassador program.

Student Ambassadors are responsible for giving campus tours to prospective students, as well as aiding in Showcase Sherman Weekends to promote the message that Sherman College has to offer and show why Sherman is the premier college for a chiropractic education.

Recruitment is underway for new Student Ambassadors to begin later in the spring quarter.

Unido Program Supports International Students
Student mentors provide guidance to our international students to help them transition to the United States. The Unido Service and Development Program supports international and Hispanic communities inside and outside of Sherman College. Coordinator Ivelisse Lopez says the program helps students develop the habits and professional skills of a chiropractor through interactions with the community, strengthening social relationships and human values in everyday situations. The organization’s mentoring program pairs students together and gives upper quarter students the opportunity to guide and help first quarter international students in their new journey at Sherman.
