As we enter the first days of 2018 tentatively and with sincere hopes of a brighter year ahead, we remind ourselves that art is a powerful expression of humanity and of global shared idealogies. And as such our appreciation of it is ever more necessary.
Now in its third year, we are delighted to continue, through our monthly newsletter, to impart our selection of exhibitions and events relating to the Middle East as well as sections on a variety of pertinent art matters and sources of inspiration.
We know that many of our friends, colleagues and clients look forward to receiving these newsletters and we very much appreciate this support. We now

GERMAN ENCOUNTERS - CONTEMPORARY MASTERWORKS FROM THE DEUTSCHE BANK COLLECTION

A Major highlight of the Qatar Germany 2017 Year of Culture is a selection of artworks from the Deutsche Bank Collection - one of the world's most important corporate collections of contemporary art - on show at the Garage Gallery at the Fire Station.
More than 100 exemplary works on paper including photographs, and paintings by 27 artists provide an informative overview of the development of German art - and thus also of the history of the country - from the 1960s up to the present day.

ALI KAZMA
SUBTERRANEAN

"Souterrain", Kazma's solo show, sets out to reveal the evolution of Kazma's work over the past ten years by including an important number of his recent works, in particular two works made specifically for this exhibition. Around twenty video works and one photographic publication - an artist's book - will be on show.

FAHRELNISSA ZEID

The retrospective »Fahrelnissa Zeid« introduces one of Turkey's most important pioneering modernists to an international audience. The artist, who was born in 1901 on an island off the coast of Istanbul into an upper-class, intellectual family and died in 1991 in Amman, Jordan, was a cosmopolite throughout her life. Her painting, which has been rediscovered beyond Turkey and Jordan in recent years at biennials and international exhibitions, synthesizes a wide range of influences, which relate to her multicultural and very eventful life.

INSTANTANÉS D'ORIENT

The Boghossian Foundation presents
Instantanés d'Orient, a selection of photographs from the Biennal of contemporary photographers from the Arab world shown in Paris at the Arab world institute as well as at the European house of photography in 2017.
The group exhibition explores the contemporary Arab world through the diverse viewpoints of six photographers: Jaber Al Azmeh, Moath Alofi, Mouna Karray, Rania Matar, Douraïd Souissi et Stephan Zaubitzer.

NAIRY BAGHRAMIAN
SÅ LÆNGE DET VARER*

The artist has created a work of art especially for the x-room at SMK. A large, sculptural piece consisting of milky, semi-transparent forms balancing precariously on tall, shiny legs.
The exhibition
also includes a photographic work by Nairy Baghramian. The work shows the artist herself drinking from the conceptual artist Michael Asher's granite sculpture Untitled
from 1991, located in the campus park by the University of California San Diego.
The granite sculpture, which doubles as a drinking fountain for the students on campus, is an exact copy of those standard metal fountains seen everywhere in public federal buildings in the USA.

LA VIE SIMPLE - SIMPLEMENT LA VIE / SONGS OF ALIENATION

The thematic exhibition
La Vie simple - Simplement la vie / Songs of Alienation
documents this unaffected look at poverty, the admiration for Millet's art and the search for a union of humankind with nature, but also charts the desires and nostalgic yearnings associated with the ideal of "the simple life". Bringing together popular devotional objects and reproductions of paintings and engravings by Jean-François Millet, in company with an original canvas by Vincent van Gogh and works by living artists, the exhibition engenders a spirit of artistic profusion and interrogates the primacy of the image within this wealth of perspectives on "the simple life". It treads an open and exploratory path that echoes with the many promises of a daily life relieved of urban constraints and the sovereignty of humankind.

CRUMBLING DOWN, UP AND UP WE CLIMB

The exhibition explores attitudes towards cultural histories and monumentality as well as the constant human condition of entropy and re-awakening. Through works by Reza Aramesh, Vajiko Chachkhiani, Jan Fabre, Goshka Macuga and Stephen G. Rhodes, it draws upon the ambivalent ambition to move forward while continuously struggling with loss and forgetfulness.

Featuring the work of over 100 artists and designers from 32 countries, the NGV Triennial surveys the world of art and design, across cultures, scales, geographies and perspectives.
A free exhibition, the NGV Triennial is a celebration of contemporary art and design practice that traverses all four levels of NGV International, as well as offering a rich array of programs.

MATUG ABORAWI: "OUT OF TEXT. DIARIES FOR PEACE, FROM LIBYA TO GRANADA"

The exhibition is the third part of a big project by the Libyan painter at the Euro-Arab Foundation. The first exhibition, in 2012, was called "Tribute to the Disappeared I". Two years later, in 2014, he presented "Tribute to the Disappeared II. Arab Spring". Now Aborawi offers two different parts in this exhibition. On the one hand, there is the work that Matug Aborawi developed during his stay in Granada; on the other hand, the work developed from 2015 in his own country, Libya, with war as a backdrop.

EVERY BUILDING IN BAGHDAD
THE RIFAT CHADIRJI ARCHIVES

This exhibition examines the work of Iraqi architect Rifat Chadirji through the collection of his original photographs and building documents held at the Arab Image Foundation in Beirut. With the work of his architectural office, Iraq Consult, and in his other professional and intellectual roles, Chadirji became a pivotal cultural figure in Baghdad during the period of its postwar modernization from the 1950s through the 1970s. As an architect, planning consultant, and Director of Buildings for various government agencies, Chadirji was central to the organization of Baghdad and to the consolidation of its postwar image.

BAYA: WOMAN OF ALGIERS

The first North American exhibition of works by the self-taught Algerian artist Baya Mahieddine (1931-1998). Known as Baya, she was born in Bordj el-Kiffan and orphaned at age five. Encouraged by her adoptive French mother to pursue art, she began as an adolescent to paint gouaches and make ceramics. Her work was soon discovered by fabled gallerist Aimé Maeght who, along with André Breton, organized an exhibition in Paris in 1947.
