Poverty, Racism, Violence: 120 Join Forces to Fight Ills

The Rt. Rev. Barry Beisner, right, the Rev. Drew Kadel, St. James', Lincoln, and Deacon Marcia Tyriver, St. Patrick's, Kenwood, traveled to Chicago last week, to join m ore than  120 laypeople and clergy gathered April 20-22 at the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Chicago for the conference: Unholy Trinity: the Intersection of Racism, Poverty and Gun Violence.

"It was an honor for me to be one of about twenty bishops leading this procession through the streets of Chicago," Beisner said. "Our Church must stand against the 'unholy trinity' of racism, poverty, and gun violence that afflict our nation. Anything that devalues the life of another human being is a form of violence."

Bishops Sign Brief to Support Immigrants

More than a dozen bishops of The Episcopal Church filed an amici curiae brief that opposes President Trump's executive order restricting immigration. The Rt. Rev. Barry Beisner, bishop of the Diocese of Northern California, also had signed onto the brief, but his name was left off in a filing error.

The brief says, in part, that the president's executive order impedes the ability of Episcopalians to practice their faith. "This executive order has slammed the door on people who have suffered some of the greatest atrocities in recent times, and it does this solely on the basis of their religion. ... Both as leaders in the Episcopal Church and as members of the broader faith community, the Bishops have a deep interest in preserving this country's special status as a safe haven for refugees and in protecting the fundamental principle of religious tolerance enshrined in the Establishment Clause."

A PDF of the full brief can be read here.

Contemplating Compline for Families

The Rev. Betsey Monnot, co-rector of  All Saints', Sacramento, writes of her attempt to get her family to pray together in a recent post on  Grow Christians:

"As my children transitioned from toddler to school-age, I worried that they might reject whatever I would come up with, just because. As double Priest's Kids, (my husband is also an Episcopal priest), they already get a lot of religion anyway. But still it nagged at me. I wanted a time at the end of the day that we could all come together, be aware that we are in the presence of God, and pray. Finally I gathered up my courage to try something new."

Read her entire post, which she says grew out of work she did during her College for Congregational Development training, here.
