Congratulations to MFA photography student Langley Anderson and BFA studio major Burke Staunton for their inclusion in the Floyd Center for the Arts "New Voice" Exhibition. This show allows regional emerging artists to display a significant body of artworks. Anderson is showing her microscopy images and Staunton is showcasing her jewelry and metalsmithing work. The exhibition runs until June 3.

Faculty, along with graduate and undergraduate students, represented Radford University at the 2017 Mid-Atlantic Regional American Music Therapy Association Conference in Rochester, New York. Actively involved with the Town Hall meeting and the update of the Masters Level Entry for the profession was Professor Jim Borling. Assistant Professor Trish Winter was vice president for conference planning. Julie Neal, assistant professor of music, served as past president of the conference and was a panelist for a student session called “Ask a Professional.” Graduate students Wei Lo and Melinda Korte presented during the conference, and undergraduate music major Shelby Reynolds participated in a poster session.

Meredith Bowen, assistant professor of music, presented “Sacred Music from the Convents of Seventeenth-Century Italy: Restoration Practices for Contemporary Women’s Choruses” at the 2017 Women Composers Festival of Hartford in Hartford, Connecticut.

The Berklee College of Music accepted music major Missy Caton into their Global Entertainment and Music Business Program in Valencia, Spain. This former IBLA intern will spend a year studying the international view of the music business.
 
Z.L. Feng, professor of art, opened a new watercolor exhibition at the Beihang Art Museum, organized by the Beijing Institute of Culture and Art Communication. This international show in Beijing, China, features over 60 artworks by Feng.

Sheldon Johnson, assistant professor of music, successfully defended his Doctor of Musical Arts’ dissertation at the University of South Carolina on the political suppression of the saxophone. Congratulations, Dr. Johnson!

Sarah Michalec ‘17, MFA in Design Thinking graduate, recently had her research “The Built Environment in Cancer Treatment Facilities: Anxiety and the Patient Experience” accepted into the Design Principles and Practices Research Network's twelfth international conference held at the Elisava Barcelona School of Design and Engineering in Barcelona, Spain in 2018.
Travel to Dublin and London with us in 2018
Join the School of Dance and Theatre for an immersion opportunity to experience art forms (dance, theatre, and visual art) and examine
their past and present correlation in two major European cities, Dublin and London.

Though this is geared toward dance and theatre students, this opportunity is open to all Radford University students.

Calling all artists – enter the
2017 Radford City Fine Art Show
This university and city of Radford collaboration invites all fine artists to enter the Radford City Fine Art Show at the Radford University Art Museum Downtown. This competition is open to any artists, ages 18 and up, who live in Southwest Virginia – which for the purposes of this exhibition extends from Bedford and Rockbridge Counties to Lee County. The entry deadline is June 4.

Audition Notice – Mary Draper Ingles: A Frontier Heroine’s Journey

In 1755, Mary Draper Ingles was captured during a Native American raid at Draper’s Meadow near what is now Blacksburg, Virginia. After being taken to present-day Ohio, Mary made a daring escape, and followed the river hundreds of miles to return home to her family in Virginia. "Mary Draper Ingles: A Frontier Heroine’s Journey" tells the story of Mary’s strength, and her determination to reunite with her family in the New River Valley.  

When: Tuesday, May 9 at 6 p.m. Callbacks will be held the following evening, May 10, by invitation only.  

Where: The Pavilion at Nesselrod Bed & Breakfast, 7535 Lee Hwy, Radford, VA 24141  

What to bring:

  1. • A headshot and resume, if you have one.
  2. • Your conflicts and availability beginning June 1, and for the performance dates listed below.
  3. • Please wear clothes that you can move in, and sturdy shoes – no flip-flops, heels, hats, big jewelry.
  4. • Readings will be from the script.  

Seeking: 4-8 dynamic, focused performers over the age of 16 to play a variety of roles. Almost all actors will double and perform in more than one role. Experience with outdoor drama preferred. Rehearsals will begin in June for performances on June 25, July 30, August 27 and September 24. All performers will be paid.  

Other Info: Rehearsals will begin in June. Additional pickup rehearsals will be scheduled throughout the summer. Performers must be available for all performance dates.   Questions? Please call:
