Russell's Ritings...
The world is a better place because Michelangelo didn't say, "I don't do ceilings."
The world is a better place because a German monk named Martin Luther didn't say, "I don't do doors."
The world is better place because an Oxford don named John Wesley didn't say, "I don't do fields."
The world is a better place because Moses didn't say, "I don't do rivers."
The world is a better place because Jeremiah didn't say, "I don't do weeping."
The world is a better place because Noah didn't say, "I don't do arks."
The world is a better place because Amos didn't say, "I don't do speeches."
The world is a better place because Rahab didn't say, "I don't do carpets."
The world is a better place because Ruth didn't say, "I don't do mothers - in - law."
The world is a better place because David didn't say, "I don't do giants."
The world is a better place because Peter didn't say, "I don't do Gentiles."
The world is a better place because Mary didn't say, "I don't do virgin births."
The world is a better place because Mary Magdalene didn't say, "I don't do feet."
The world is a better place because John didn't say, "I don't do deserts."
The world is a better place because Paul didn't say, "I don't do letters."
The world is a better place because Jesus didn't say, "I don't do crosses."
Our question - "Where is our place of service making the world a better place?"
Diane and I are on a vacation to France for a couple weeks, a trip we have planned for a couple years now. We are thinking of you and praying for you during these days. In my absence this Sunday the Reverend Dr. Meredith Rupe will be preaching. We at UMCE are blessed to have Meredith and the Reverend Joyce Snapp - both retired pastors - in our midst. I hope you will support Meredith this Sunday and Joyce next Sunday. I will be back in the country on May 4 and will be in the pulpit on May 7.
God Bless!

Methodists across the connection will be closely observing the work of the Judicial Council this next week. The Judicial Council is the "Supreme Court" of our church. Our denomination, like our government, has three branches - the Legislative (General Conference), the Executive (the Bishops and their Cabinets) and the Judicial (The Judicial Council). Next week the Judicial Council will consider our own Bishop Karen Oliveto. As you know, Bishop Oliveto is the first openly gay Bishop to serve in the UMC. Her election (and subsequent assignment to our conference) led to a petition asking for a declaratory decision by the Judicial Council regarding her nomination, election, consecration, and assignment since our book of church law, the Discipline, specifically prohibits ordination of self-avowed, practicing homosexuals.
There are a number of possible outcomes we can speculate upon. Her election could be ruled valid. Her election could be ruled unconstitutional and invalid, thereby resulting in her removal. The Council could also delay a decision until the work of the "Commission On a Way Forward" completes its assigned task and reports to the next General Conference. However, until the Council rules there is nothing but speculation.
Our own UMCE has held a prayer vigil for this situation - for Karen, for her spouse, Robin, for our conference, and for our denomination. I am asking you to continue praying as we move closer to the important hearing on April 25 at 9:00. We will do our best to keep you informed as more news develops.

WALKING THE LABYRINTH IN A WALKING MEDITATION
Facilitator: Dr. Lorna Idol
Come join the Adult Education Group for a spiritual journey! This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about how labyrinths are utilized to bring one closer to God, to seek communion with God to explore life's challenges and to obtain God's guidance. We will learn about: 1) how labyrinths are used to enhance one's Christian spiritual journey through the labyrinth with a walking meditation; 2) some history on the use of labyrinth walking; 3) the symbolism behind the most famous Chartres Cathedral Labyrinth in France (See below picture.), which is one of the world's most well-known labyrinths, attracting pilgrims for over 1,000 years; and 4) view beautiful examples of labyrinths throughout the ages and over the last 4,000 years. This information gathering will be followed by discussion, sharing of personal experiences with labyrinths and planning for a journey to walk a labyrinth after our 10:30 church service.

FAMILY PROMISE ANNUAL REPORT
|
Our church has supported Family Promise, a ministry for homeless families, for about 20 years. Their annual report had some very positive statistics. In 2016 there were 64 families served for total of 8493 shelter days. When the families find housing and employment, there is a follow-up program of support. Because of this support, 95% were employed and 100% were stably housed.
Some loyal volunteers in our church are Bill Graf, Penn and Marilyn Gildersleeve, JoAnn Vogt, Michael Eaton, Jan Thurling, Janice Vickery and Linda Castle. If you speak to any of them, they can tell you more about the experience.
If you are interested in serving as a volunteer in this ministry, please call Jo Ann Dunn at 303-674-1695.
