Fast Track Public Art Project
An Outdoor Photo Mural Exhibition Celebrating the People of Hagerstown
Do you know Hagerstown, Maryland, and its people? Can you capture the truth of life in Hagerstown in a photo? Then this opportunity is for you!
The City of Hagerstown, in partnership with the Washington County Arts Council and the Visit Hagerstown-Washington County Convention & Visitor's Bureau is pleased to announce the inaugural exhibition of Faces of Hagerstown (FOH), a signature public art feature of the new Hagerstown Cultural Trail.
Faces of Hagerstown is a large-scale outdoor photo mural gallery focusing on the human face and the truth of the Hagerstown experience. It will be located along the Hagerstown Cultural Trail in two prominent locations: (1) on a layered chain link mesh screening at the West Antietam Street Entrance Plaza (artist rendering above), and (2) on a restored artistic masonry wall and custom decorative pole covers along the Lee Street segment of the Trail.

Shepherd University International Guitar Festival
The
third annual Shepherd University International Guitar Festival, which runs April 28-May 1, will offer several opportunities for the public to attend concerts and observe master classes. The festival, sponsored by Doc's Tea, will feature Grammy Award-winner David Russell, Cuban guitarist and composer Eduardo Martín, classical guitarist William Feasley, and guitar luthier Randy Angella.
Guitar festival events open to the public include:
- Friday, April 28, 8 p.m.-William Feasley, award-winning solo artist and international performer; Shepherdstown Presbyterian Church, 100 W. Washington St.; admission by donation.
- Saturday, April 29, 8 p.m.-Martín & Martín Duo, internationally recognized Cuban guitarist Eduardo Martín and his daughter Galy Martín; St. Agnes Catholic Church, 106 S. Duke St.; admission by donation.
- Sunday, April 30, 8 p.m.-David Russell, Grammy Award-winning Scottish guitarist; Shepherd's Marinoff Theater; general admission is $20, and $15 for seniors and students under age 18.
- Monday, May 1, 1:30 p.m.-Festival Participants' Showcase; Shepherd's Frank Center W. H. Shipley Recital Hall; admission by donation.

Meet local artists, catch live performances and demonstrations, attend specialty workshops, and make your own creations at the Frostburg Arts Walk! Designed to be a walking arts tour, attendees can expect a jam-packed evening with a wide array of entertainment for the whole family! Over 45 artists and craftspeople will be selling their wares in 28 participating businesses and locations in downtown. There is lots of fun to be had for the kids, too! Children can create unique crafts at City Place using recycled materials, hosted by Evergreen Heritage Center, or board the Arts Bus for more colorful fun with Kids Craft with Clare. Other children's activities and demonstrations include a free pasta necklace station, a homemade play dough workshop, and a tie-dye workshop.

Learn to make jewelry using the beautiful pattern technique of chain maille. Your creations will be a mesmerizing dance of rings. Each participant will be able to make a bracelet and a pair of earrings or pendant during the workshop. All materials needed to make your projects are included in your workshop fee. Participants may wish to bring their own chain maille pliers and magnifiers.

Jean Cushwa Art Scholarship Award
The Washington County Museum of Fine Arts Announces the Jean Cushwa Art Scholarship Award. The $1,000 Scholarship will be awarded to one Graduating High School Senior and a resident of Washington County each year who plans to pursue studies in Visual Art, Art History, Art Education, Design, Architecture, or Museum Studies. Funds are to be used to support tuition and fees for the first year of college. The winner will be chosen by a selection committee, comprised of representatives from the WCMFA's Board of Trustees, Board of Advisors, Director and Staff.
The Washington County Museum of Fine Arts offers internships to qualified college students with an interest in Art, Art History, or Museum Studies. In an environment of supervised, hands-on learning, internships allow students to become familiar with the day-to-day operations of the museum and to contribute to a variety of museum projects and functions. Applications are accepted in the spring of each year, for 1 summer internship position with a stipend; other volunteer internships may also be available.
The Cushwa College Internship has been established through the estate of Jean Cushwa and her heirs.

Nature and History
C. William Gilchrist Museum of the Arts
May 5 through May 28
The Cumberland Cultural Foundation will present the exhibit "Nature and History" at the C. William Gilchrist Museum of the Arts, 104 Washington St, Cumberland MD, from May 5 through May 28.
The exhibit will feature works by wood turned artist, Mike Cope, along with a variety of art from the private collections of the Allaway family, the Giarritta family, the Halmos family, the Lin/Irwin family, the Persons family, and the Scarpelli family. Gallery guests will have the opportunity to meet the artist and the art collectors at the opening reception May 6 from 5 to 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
MIke Cope's favorite approach is to find a gnarly piece of wood and let its inner beauty come out. Whether that happens to be a bowl, a vase, or an abstract expression, Cope's goal is to create an agile form that has volume without a mass.
For the first time ever, the Gilchrist Gallery will display art pieces from the private collections of 6 Cumberland MD families who have been patrons of the arts community for many years. This exhibit will give gallery visitors an unprecedented opportunity to view these items and gain a glimpse into what motivated the collectors to make them their own.

The Runner Stumbles!
The Potomac Playmakers announce the final show of their historic 90th Anniversary Season, Milan Stitt's "The Runner Stumbles!" In this great drama, a young nun has died under mysterious circumstances in a remote parish in northern Michigan, and her superior, Father Rivard, has been charged with her murder. The action alternates between interrogations, testimony and scenes from the past which reveal that Father Rivard, who had been banished to the small, up-country parish, fell in love with Sister Rita; and when circumstances forced her to move into the rectory with him, his anguish became unbearable. Their relationship, inevitably, spelt tragedy, but not until the explosive and surprising climax of the play is the full extent of their sacrifice made clear and the identity of the murderer revealed.
Produced by special permission from Dramatists Play Service, Inc. and Directed by Barry Harbaugh with Nic Sigman, "The Runner Stumbles" features the talented cast of Tom Doty, Larry Doucette, Starlene Hamilton, Kim Jones, Andrew King, Adam Martens, Maverick McKee, Lexi Oliver, and Andrea Robison.

Maryland Symphony Orchestra presents

The 35th anniversary season of the Maryland Symphony Orchestra comes to a close as internationally acclaimed pianist Yuliya Gorenman will perform Beethoven's ("Emperor") Concerto No. 5, with the MSO, Elizabeth Schulze conducting, on Saturday May 13 at 6:00 p.m. and Sunday, May 14 at 3:00 p.m. at the historic Maryland Theatre. Tickets range from $15 - $65 and are available at marylandsymphony.org or by calling 301-797-4000.
In addition to Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, the program includes Beethoven's Symphony No. 5. Together, they represent two of the most recognizable pieces of music ever written.
This final weekend is coupled with "A 35th Anniversary Celebration," a special event to celebrate 35 years of the Maryland Symphony Orchestra. On Saturday, concertgoers will be treated to a complimentary wine tasting, featuring Big Cork Vineyards, Knob Hall and Red Heifer wineries, hors d'oeuvres, and birthday cake in the courtyard of the Maryland Theatre and on the adjacent block of South Potomac Street. Full pours of wine will be available for purchase. The pre-concert festivities on Saturday will begin at 4:30 p.m. and will continue after the conclusion of the concert. The event is free for all attendees of the Saturday evening concert. The Sunday, May 14 concert does not include pre or post-concert activities.

Call for Artists
32nd Biennial Quilt Exhibition
The Schoolhouse Quilters Guild Inc. of Cumberland Maryland cordially invites quilters and sewers of all ages to participate in the group's 32nd Biennial Quilt Exhibition from June 16-18, 2017 at the Allegany County Fairgrounds. Submission date is June 14 from 12 noon to 5 PM at the Multi-Purpose Building, 11490 Moss Avenue, Cumberland MD 21502. There is no charge to participate.
Monetary and non-monetary awards will be presented along with ribbons. The quilts will be judged on originality, technique, and craftsmanship. The jurors are all members of the the National Association of Certified Quilt Judges.
The main awards are sponsored by Hunter Douglas, major manufacturer of custom-made window coverings, and local area employer, include Best of Show, Best Use of Color, and Best Quilting Technique.

A graduate of The Juilliard School, Pandolfi earned both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees as a scholarship student. The young American pianist is an exciting virtuoso who, with each passing season, is becoming more and more sought after by audiences worldwide, and showered with superlatives by critics for his passionate artistry and amazing technique in performing the works of Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, and Liszt. In the "Pops" genre, Pandolfi is considered a leading interpreter of the works of George Gershwin.

Barbershop Harmony is a unique art form, with its roots from back during the turn of the century America. The barbershop style of harmony uses close 4 - part acapella referring to no musical accompaniment. Old songs with smooth melodies and natural harmony were written in the heyday of Tin Pan Alley from 1890 to 1920 which were best suited for the barbershop harmony style.
These songs were about the simple pleasures and emotions of life that an average singer could easily sing. Beginning in the small town barbershops, local country stores and churches throughout America, it was not long before the male quartet became a standard act in Vaudeville shows and other musical entertainments. Recordings of popular quartets in the early decades of the 20th century formed the heart of barbershop music as we know it today, a style that still delights the performer as well as the listener.
The Mason Dixon Barbershop Chorus is one of over 800 chapters comprised of over 35,000 singers worldwide. Living in communities in the surrounding areas such Hagerstown and even some from over the Mason-Dixon Line in Pennsylvania (hence the name), our chorus members come from many different occupations. Some members might be new, while others having been a part of the tradition of singing barbershop for over 60 years or more. Throughout the year the chorus performs at a variety of venues such as nursing homes, hospitals, civic events including the singing "The National Anthem" at the Hagerstown Suns game as well as for private audiences. Some of the songs we sing are familiar classics like "My Wild Irish Rose", "Chattanooga Choo Choo" and "Shenandoah".

"Two Museum Thefts that Made Headlines in Baltimore"

of the Walters Art Museum (1994-2013)
Dr. Gary Vikan served as director of the Walters Art Museum for nearly two decades. Since retiring from that post in 2013, he has devoted his time to research and writing. His new memoir, Sacred and Stolen: Confessions of a Museum Director, published by SelectBooks, tells a story of looted fakes, forgeries, and failed exhibitions. In this entertaining lecture, Vikan will recount some of the unexpected and little known challenges of running an art museum. Copies of his memoir will be available for purchase for $20.00 in the Museum Shop.
