Arts News for April 27, 2017
Welcome Teri Bordenave

Teri Bordenave doesn't quite live in Vermont. Her New Hampshire home is just over 10 miles from the border. For the next several months, however, we welcome her as an honorary Vermonter. As interim director, Teri will lead the Council as we develop our strategic plan and search for a new executive director.

Teri brings to the Council more than 20 years as a nonprofit executive, along with experience as an interim executive for museums, arts, cultural, and entrepreneurial organizations. She has served as a president/CEO, trustee, and consultant. Her expertise includes leadership and organizational development, strategic planning, and governance. Teri also has a creative side; her background as a poet and artist inform her consulting efforts as she "approaches each endeavor as a unique work of art."

Teri welcomes your thoughts about the role of the arts and the Arts Council in Vermont. Contact Teri by email here.

Please join the Council staff and trustees in welcoming Teri!
IAA Family Portrait Project: Celebrating Diversity

The staff and administration at the Integrated Arts Academy (IAA) believe that students can only achieve academic success when they work together in a safe and caring environment. As a core principle, IAA embraces family diversity, recognizing the powerful impact that an inclusive environment has on students and student learning.

This principle was the inspiration behind the IAA Family Portrait Project, a collaboration between IAA, Burlington City Arts, and the PTO. Michelle Saffran's photographs of IAA student families are coupled with stories written by students. Through this project, children from more than 20 countries express unique perspectives on what makes a family special.

The collaborative pieces will be exhibited in Burlington during May. Stop by City Hall and businesses in the Old North End to experience these deeply personal and creative works. Find out more about the IAA Family Portrait Project.
Vermont Poetry Champion Competes on National Stage

She competed with 52 other high school students for the national championship. The Lake Champlain Valley High School freshman was poised, confident, and expressive as she recited her selected poems. A Closer Look

Artist Laura Jane Walker's art starts with a chance event. The rest of the work is careful and controlled. She and her paintings move in one direction, which is forward.

Talking to Laura reveals more about her process and about her philosophy. Read about both in this week's featured story, " The Art of Chance."
