How to Choose a Therapist
by Jessica Scott
Choosing a therapist, for yourself or your child, who specializes in trauma therapy can be a daunting task. There are several things to consider when deciding which therapist to choose. First, make sure the therapist accepts your insurance. If you have SoonerCare, most therapists bill directly to the insurance, but if you have private insurance, you'll need to determine if you will be responsible for submitting claims to the company, how much of the session is covered, the amount of your co-pay and if your deductible has to be met before the insurance company will pay towards the services. Next, find a therapist who has extensive training in trauma therapy. The current evidence-based interventions being used are Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). Also, look for someone who specializes in a particular age group. For young children, Play Therapy is a good option for processing through the traumatic experience. It is advised that you choose a certified Play Therapist to work with your child. During the initial assessment, do not be afraid to ask the therapist questions about their approach or goals they set for therapy, the length of time they expect therapy to last and if they incorporate family therapy in their treatment. Family sessions are strongly advised for the healing process with children. There are many therapeutic styles and the right fit between client and therapist is necessary for the healing process to begin. If you do not feel like you or your child are making a connection with the therapist, do not hesitate to request a different therapist within the agency.
