DITCH A CAR AND SAVE THOUSANDS

Taking advantage of public transit can provide a windfall for your household budget.

According to the latest report from the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), people in Honolulu can save an average of more than $11,000 a year by taking a bus or a train and shedding the use of a car.

The report shows that people in only 6 other cities can save more.

The savings are calculated by determining the costs of insurance, maintenance, fuel and parking and comparing it with the cost of a 12-month transit pass.

New Yorkers can save the most---more than $14,000 a year.  And people in Las Vegas can save more than $9,000 a year.

It's easy enough to see that going by bus and rail most days and using the savings to rent a car when needed certainly puts one ahead financially, if public transit is a viable option.
