Occupy Olympia for Education!
Occupy Olympia growing: join us next week, too!
Resist the Senate Budget
"Some people were skeptical at first about our effort," said
Phyllis Campano, SEA president and lead occupier. "But it's clear that the worst thing possible is for budget negotiators to be left alone on campus. The Democratic budget negotiators come find us every day to talk - it's a morale boost for them and keeps them focused on what's important."
Upwards of 50 WEA members have crashed every event happening on campus - from bill signings to hearings - and we've created events when one isn't happening. Our singing has filled the legislative rotunda each day, too.
Our original plan was to do this for two weeks,
but our allies have asked us to keep it up through
the end of this special session next week! If you've still got a personal day left, we need you! Sign up at
https://tinyurl.com/OccupyOlympia
. We are running carpools from SEA and providing lunch.

Supporting our Race and Equity Teams
SEA has received a grant from NEA to help us support our school Race and Equity Teams. We are creating a "partners" program to connect teams with each other, with additional resources, and with skilled support. SEA is offering 10 stipended positions for partners to support the 40 race and equity teams next year.
Partners will support RETs in:
- Engaging in Professional Learning Community with other RET
- Finding and utilizing topic specific resources (for example: restorative practices, inclusion models, whole school discipline policies)
- Establishing meeting and team (operating) protocols
- Co-facilitating staff conversations
- Supporting school professional development

SEA Center for Race and Equity Action Team Meetings
The SEA Center for Race and Equity hosted a successful Leadership Summit on 3/25 which provided opportunities for educators across the district to share the work we are doing and continue strategizing for district-wide changes that we lead on.
The next step is to create the vision of the work with educators that attended the summit as well as others who indicated interest but were not able to attend. We have
began meeting as action teams focused on 6 previously educator selected focus areas end of April. We will continue hosting multiple action team meetings in the next couple of weeks.
Please join educators at one or more of the following action team meetings:
- Sunday, 5/21, 2:30-4:30 - Culturally Responsive Teaching (Seattle Public Library, University Branch at 5009 Roosevelt Way NE, 98105)
- Tuesday, 5/23, 4:30-6:30 - Access to Choice/Desegregating Special Programs (Washington Middle School)
- Thursday, 5/24, 4:30-6:30 - Ethnic Studies & Address Disproportionate Discipline (Seattle Education Association Office - 5501 4th Avenue South)
The other two teams, Specialist and Enrichment Resource Equity and Recruitment and Retention of Educators of Color will be rescheduled on one of the dates above.
Bring a colleague or two, share with your school's staff and come even if you cannot stay the entire time.
Also, please RSVP and email if you have any questions:

Proposed bylaws changes and an agreement on cancelling of substitute assignments
Your Association representatives will vote on two items next month. Please review them and get feedback to your reps. The first is a
proposal to change SEA's Bylaws regarding how we conduct votes on work stoppages (such as strikes). This was submitted by two substitutes, Roberta Lindeman and Dan Troccoli.
The second item is a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) negotiated between SEA and SPS which would govern how substitute jobs are cancelled, whether by the substitute or by the school.
