 "I love my teacher because ... "
"Mr. Cooke has taught me how to play the saxophone and the tenor drum. He has also helped me become a better person by teaching me to treat others with respect."

Dear Team DPS,
Supt. Tom Boasberg

This week is Teacher Appreciation Week -- a time for the entire DPS community to say "thank you" to our educators and honor them for the amazing work they do every day.

We know our teachers are at the forefront of our kids' education, and they are the greatest resource in helping us reach our vision, Every Child Succeeds. This week, we've partnered with the community to share discounts and giveaways with our educators, and created teacher feature videos and arranged special visits. But in the end, we know the most meaningful "thank you" a teacher can receive is one from their own student. And here are just a few of the many words of thanks we've heard from our kids:
"I love my teacher because she is fun and we get to go on field trips. I know Ms. Lynn loves me because every time I do my work she smiles and tells me good job. She always cares about me no matter what."
-- Abby Williams, fourth grade
Teacher Lynn Malie, Doull Elementary

"I love my teacher because she doesn't judge anyone's things, such as artwork. Plus, she is always very happy and I've never seen her without a smile. My teacher has taught me to read in Spanish and she has taught me to finish all my work and never give up."
-- Jazmin Espinoza Garcia, sixth grade
Teacher Tess Crissey, Bear Valley International School

"My teacher has inspired me to become a builder because she taught us a lot about building with shapes. I learned that a box is a cube."
-- Dempsey Frandina, first grade
Teacher Lizzie Bromley-Vogel, Downtown Denver Expeditionary School

"I love my teacher because she is the nicest teacher ever and she teaches us about animal and science and plants."
-- Myeisha Mack, second grade
Teacher Anna Marchio, Dora Moore
"All of the teachers and administrators at CLA have changed my life. I am graduating this year and going to college. I feel confident because of them. They've helped me mature. They support me to be the best I can be. Without them I wouldn't have a sense of family at school."
-- Marisela Aguilar, 12th grade

Thank you to our teachers, for your passion and dedication, for the early mornings and late nights, and for the love and care you give our students every day. The work you're doing now will make a difference for a lifetime to come.

Thank you!

Best,
Tom

Special Visits

Tom Boasberg and Susana Cordova visited DPS classrooms to support teachers however they needed an extra hand.

Tom stopped by Schmitt Elementary and taught a kindergarten class while Susana visited Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Early College and taught a high school Spanish class. Learn more and see photos of the fun here.

Discounts and Giveaways

Thanks to generous donations from community partners, DPS was able to surprise 60 teachers across our schools with random giveaway gifts, including front-row seats to the Rockies, a $50 gift card to Avenue Grill, Kindness Yoga passes and much more. And every teacher was able to take advantage of more than 20 great discounts offered by businesses throughout Denver. See the complete list here, and thank you to our sponsors!
Walk and Bike to School Day had Students Rolling and Strolling to Class
Students at Steele Elementary biked to school.
On Wednesday, hundreds of
families throughout DPS took a break from their normal traffic routines for National Walk & Bike to School Day . Schools around Denver hosted health- and safety-focused celebration, including at Southmoor Elementary, where families and students rode into school together in their own bike parade.

Lincoln Elementary hosted
their first "Bike Rodeo" Thursday, when kids cruised through bike obstacle courses and learned the "rules of the road." There was also a helmet decorating station and a student council-run first-aid area.

National Walk & Bike to School Day celebrates the benefits of biking and walking to school, including increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety awareness, traffic congestion, caring for the environment and building connections between families, schools and the community.
