FROM GAYLE

Dear Friends,
Alleluia Christ is Risen!!!  We have so much to celebrate as a church community, so many good things are happening, we are busy, the Bishop is coming.  But I realize as I say this that there are some people in our community that are sick, grieving, struggling.  Who haven't you seen lately?  Who do you know that is sick or caring for a sick loved one?  Who do you miss?  Send them a note, give them a call, help them to stay connected.

Sometimes just a simple note makes someone's day.  Let's reach out to the members of our body and remind them they are one with us.  Thank you!

See you  Sunday!  We are having a baptism!!!  Gayle+

SUNDAY, APRIL 30 @ 10:30 am  CHORAL EUCHARIST  (AND BAPTISM!!)
Our third choral Eucharist of the season will be April 30 at our 10:30 service.  St. John's Choir will sing the Messe Solennelle by the French composer Louis Vierne.  Vierne was the organist at the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris, a post he held from 1900 until his death in 1937.  Born with congenital cataracts, Vierne was quite blind, but had a gift for music from the early age of two!  He eventually entered the Paris Conservatory and subsequently was the assistant organist to Charles-Marie Widor at St. Sulpice.
Vierne's music is very colorful and highly idiomatic for the organ.  The sense of balanced phrases that one finds in Mozart, for example, can also be found throughout Vierne's writing.  He valued musical form and a color that was never sensational or theatrical.
Vierne undertook a concert tour of the US to raise funds for the restoration of the organ at Notre Dame, which had been neglected for some time.  While the tour was successful, it further drained his health.  He died at the end of his 1750 th concert at the cathedral after playing the theme for an improvisation.  His music continues to live on and thrive.
