Hall of Honor Inductee
Frank Maitia, Jr. '60

Below is the bio of Frank Maitia Jr. from the Hall of Honor Awards banquet program.  Frank was introduced to the audience by a wonderful and heartfelt speech by John L. Fanucchi '68. Due to Frank's health, his son, Frank Maitia III '86, came up to the podium and gave a lovely acceptance speech for his father.  The Block G was presented to Frank at his table.

Frank Maitia, Jr. was the president of the Letterman Club and Captain of the Garces Ram football team his senior year at Garces.  He played four years of football and baseball. After graduating in 1960, Frank joined the United States Marine Corps.  After serving his country, Frank went to work as a bartender for the Amestoy Hotel. Later on, he partnered up with his father and together they ran Maitia's Basque CafĂ©.  In 1980, he branched out and opened Maitia's, a large restaurant and lounge, just down the street from Garces.  He ran Maitia's at that location for 20 years until he downsized.  He eventually sold the restaurant and retired.

As a restaurateur and well respected figure in the Basque and Bakersfield community, Frank was always generous with his time and ability to share food and assistance to many local organizations, especially to Garces.

As an avid supporter of Garces, and with his restaurant just down the street, he provided breakfast for the entire football team and coaching staff on game days for several years.  After all the home games, the player's families were invited back to the restaurant where he provided delicious food along with gracious hospitality.  He supported the Garces Gala and the Monsignor Leddy Golf Tournament and provided advertising revenue when asked. He was an active Booster Club member and a proud advocate for Garces.  He attended every Garces football and baseball game that he could.  When it became difficult for him to get around, the Garces community held a tribute dinner and presented him with a golf cart.

Beyond Garces, Frank supported the Bakersfield community.  He supported Jack Frost youth football, youth soccer, Bakersfield College football, the East Bakersfield Progressive Club, and Foothill High School football and many local events.

Frank and his wife Susan sent all three of their children to Garces: Elizabeth Mebane '83, Frank Maitia III '86, Nicole Rebuck '96.  Before his children were Rams, you often found him bringing them to games. Once they were here, he supported them in all their activities and was an active and involved parent.  Frank and Susan have seven grandchildren - two are also Garces Alumni -  Jonah Megahey '16, Trenton Rebuck '16, Frankie Maitia IV, Marco Maitia, Nixon Rebuck, Lola Rebuck, and Emma Mebane.

Ode to My Mom
By: Aurora Nunez
Her yell is like a hard rock metal song that I
never liked.
Her footsteps up the stairs are as if I am going
to be killed by a serial killer.
My heart shrinks in a shape of a penny.
Her smell is like a dozen roses being smashed
on my face.
Her face looks as though she never wears
makeup, pink, like my cast
She is as fast as a slingshot being shot across
the room that goes by in a blink of an eye.
My mom is like hulk, big and vicious.
She is like music on my phone that changes
constantly,
She is like old songs I can't get rid of.
When people see her face she brightens up the
room like a full moon at night,
For her I will never give up.

Ode to My Baseball Bat
By: Steven Contreras
My baseball bat has quickness like a super car,
It swings like a park swing, smoothly.
It's powerful as the mighty Thor
It can hit faster than a rocket.
It strikes the ball so well as a pitcher painting the corners on home plate.
It can never miss its target,
Elegant as an expensive dress,
It helps me when my teammates and I need it.
When I swing, it can drop bombs to the outfield,
When I swing it, it makes me feel powerful like the gods.

A Day Spent by the Ocean
By: Victoria Morales
The ocean is like a blue blanket
It keeps the sea beneath.
The splashes of the sea foam tickle my fingertips,
The waves coming to shore numb my bare feet.
The air filled with a mixture of sand and sea that I can taste on my tongue.
I can see the sea life swimming though blue sheets that cover them.
A certain scent of fishy salt water fills my nose,
I can almost taste the smell of coconut sunscreen on my arms.
Elizabeth and Richard are throwing a Frisbee right in front of the Santa Monica Pier.
I'm thankful I can't really smell the fishy salt water,
The crashing waves are now calm so I can see what's beneath them.
I glided on top of the water with my new found wings,
The wind braided my tangled hair,
The once calm waves are now sending a huge flow my way.

Mia Rose
By: Mika Reclusado
My sister is a thorny rose
Who survives purely off Nutella.
She tastes of orange juice and wild nights,
She smells of Enchanted Wonderstruck.
Mia looks like the best thing you'll never have-
Always too good for you to even dream about.
She sounds of effortless laughter,
Her skin of expensive satin,
She sounds the way summer sun feels.
Mia is relaxed like Tehachapi,
But upbeat like San Jose.
The sweet grass of sunshine reflects off her eyes,
Flying over me and granting every wish,
She is beautiful but not to be messed with.

A Sweet Kiss
By: Ada Zhou
A piece of time, but tightly condensed.
Small as a dime, forever to sense,
By scent of by sight, with joy or with fright.
This memory of mine, will always shine.
I was still just a girl, afraid of the world.
When lips came to touch, my memory as such:
A day of norm, when school had ended,
I with this boy, whom I have friended.
Two months have passed, since declared as mines.
This moment at last, those lips so fine.
Sitting down, we both were.
He took to stand, and reached out his hand.
I knew his motives, and I got dizzy.
Instead of accepting, I said, "I'm too lazy."
He was persistent,
I was charmed by that. Although I denied him
He still came and tried. He sat down beside me,
His hands in mine. He looked me in the eyes,
When all stopped with time.
Closer he came, it was over in a flash. Our lips had touch, with the gentlest clash.
Oh such a sweet memory, this first kiss of mine. It shall always remain,
So long the sun shines.

Message from
Debra Sakowski
Asst. Principal for
Academic Affairs

Dear Parents,

This year, as I watched the Kentucky Derby, I thought of how much this event paralleled our Graduation event. The preparation, all year, for the big day, the regalia, traditions of the event, the formal attire, the procession, line up, prayer and then the much awaited shout, "And they're off!"

Your students have prepared these last four years for the opportunity to walk across the stage and receive their diploma from Garces Memorial High School.  They began in August of 2013, on a journey which would include many ups and downs, the lowering and shortening of skirts and pants, frantic moments with uncharged iPads and phones, and a desire to finish the race and indeed hear the roar, "And they're off."

This now, class of 2017, will indeed cross the finish line and be recognized for all their achievements while at Garces Memorial High School.  Congratulations to all of you, parents.  You have run the race alongside your student and will now relish and celebrate the moment they move into the next phase of their life. May God Bless all of you.
