A Look Into the Past

International Ocean Telegraphy Company at
Joshua Creek

According to Canter Brown Jr., in  Florida's Peace River Frontier, one of the "testing stations" along the International Ocean Telegraph Company's (IOTC) line built from Gainesville to Punta Russa to Cuba was "Joshua Creek." The area was homesteaded by Lewis Henry Parker and in a few years he was joined by his brothers John Wesley Whidden and Robert Calvin Hendry.   By 1872, the Western Union connection from the TransAtlantic cable had reached Lake City in northern Florida. The IOTC line was constructed south from that point, through the central part of the state, including through Arcadia, to Punta Rassa, near Fort Myers. From there, the underseas cable reached Key West and Havana. Many areas of Florida still have roads names "Wire Road." indicating the road built to construct and maintain the telegraph line, although most residents are unaware of the historic connotation. The International Ocean Telegraph Company line and undersea cable, built by British and Spanish investors, provided the only telegraph link between Europe and the islands of the Caribbean, and eventually many countries in Central and South America, for seven years until more direct cables were laid. Finally, European countries were linked telegraphically with many of their colonies in the western hemisphere.
