Hall of Fame Dinner - An Evening to Remember

On January 12th, more than 1,000 guests came together at the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame Dinner and Induction Ceremony to honour and celebrate the tremendous achievements and substantial contributions of the 2017 inductees. In recognition of Canada's 150th Anniversary, Mining Matters and MineralsEd were selected as the evening's recipients of donations in support of mineral resources education.
Responding to a passionate call for support from Pierre Lassonde, more than 100 donor forms were received, pledging a significant $600,000 to broaden students' understanding of Earth science and the vital role rocks, minerals, metals and mining play in everyday life. Funds will also help increase awareness of the many career opportunities in the minerals industry.
Select donors will receive a signed copy of Dr. Norman Keevil's new book, Never Rest on Your Ores: Building a Mining Company, One Stone at a Time. Dr. Keevil's book will be featured in the Fall 2017 catalogue of McGill-Queen's University Press and will be published in September.
Donors were featured in the March 6-19, 2017 edition of The Northern Miner and will be listed in our 2017 Annual Newsletter. We look forward to sharing more broadly their philanthropic philosophy and personal commitment to Earth science education.

Mining Matters Hockey Tournament

There's no question that Mining Matters scored at the Mining Matters Annual Hockey Tournament, held during the PDAC International Convention. Twelve teams came together on March 4th at Scotiabank Pond, Downsview Park in Toronto to continue a 10-year tradition, playing fun and competitive hockey while raising funds for Mining Matters programs.
In every way, the tournament was a terrific success. The competitive spirit, fun and camaraderie were obvious throughout the day. Thanks to the many teams and sponsors, this year's event raised over $15,000 for Mining Matters education initiatives.

INAC Funding Opens Doors

Mining Matters understands the importance of exciting students about Earth science and the wide array of careers in the mineral exploration and mining industries. Recognizing this, Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) provided a significant $150,000 for Mining Matters Mining Rocks Earth Science Programs in 2016-2017.
With INAC's generous funding, Mining Matters delivered 23 programs, developed six new hands-on activities and reached new audiences in Newfoundland and Labrador, Québec and the Northwest Territories, specifically Sheshatshiu First Nation, NL; Kangiqsualujjuaq and Natashquan, QC; and Fort Simpson, Fort Liard and Fort Providence, NT.
The new activities explore environmental considerations during the mineral resource development cycle and how mining operations minimize environmental impacts through management strategies and technologies. Designed for grade 7 and 8 students, the activities focus on the water cycle, types of mine water and efficient water use, the importance of maintaining surface and groundwater quality, land reclamation and closure, and environmental careers in mining.

Individuals often go above and beyond to support Mining Matters. Glenn Nolan, a former Chief of the Missanabie Cree First Nation and the first Indigenous President of the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada, and partner Maureen Hatherley are celebrating 2017 - a banner year in Canada, Yukon and mining history - by tackling the Yukon River Quest.
The marathon canoe and kayak race challenges paddlers to test their endurance, racing 715 km from Whitehorse to Dawson City. "We couldn't think of a better way to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Nation than to bring together those things we love: canoeing, a physically challenging event; honouring the significant role Indigenous people play in mining in Canada; and the importance of mining to all Canadians," says Nolan.

2017 PDAC Convention - Mining Matters Education Program

Innovation in mineral exploration, mining and education was the theme of the 2017 Mining Matters Education Program held during the PDAC Convention. The program was attended by 166 students and educators.
T
eachers' Day introduced the use of geophysics, geochemistry and computer modeling in mineral exploration, and provided educators with the opportunity to participate in one of two workshops focused on diamonds or mining and the environment. Educators visited the Trade Show and were engaged by industry experts and Earth science educators throughout the day. Elementary, secondary and post-secondary educators from Ontario, Québec and British Columbia were in attendance.
During the elementary and secondary student programs, educational activities focused on techniques in mineral exploration, understanding mineral properties, the use of minerals and industry careers. Students also participated in guided tours of the Trade Show.
